Monaco 2: Development Update!

Greeting Thieves!

It’s been a bit since you’ve heard from us (building a game is serious business), but we wanted to update you all on the development of Monaco 2. Rather than write a stuffy blog post, we thought we’d compile the biggest questions we’ve seen from the Monaco community and grill Pocketwatch Games CEO Andy Schatz for answers.

When is Monaco 2 coming out?
It’s coming out in 2025! (That’s all you’re gonna get outta me.)

How many players can play Monaco 2?
Up to 4 friends can play, either split screen or online. In online mode, you can also invite additional spectators. Spectators can even join mid-mission and then join in as thieves on your next heist.

What if I want to play by myself? Can I do that?
Of course! Let’s be clear, Monaco 1 was better known for its co-op than the single player. With Monaco 2, loads of care has been taken to make sure the single-player experience is compelling in its own right.

How many playable characters will there be?
There are 8 playable characters, but each has a number of trinkets that significantly change their gameplay.

Why did you switch the art style?
Monaco 1 came out over a decade ago, we wanted to make a new Monaco for a new generation of players. Since heist movies often hinge on playing with verticality and creative solutions to problems, 3d levels felt necessary for that vision.

Wait, is this game procedurally generated?
Yes and no. The levels are built in chunks, and then a procedural game director stitches them together intelligently. The main campaign uses locked seeds hand-selected by the development team, so there’s a single experience shared by all players. But you can go back and play the campaign on random seeds for additional rewards, and you can play the Daily Heists to compete against other thieves!

Does it run on Steam Deck?
Sure does!

And that’s all from Andy (for now)! We’ll be providing more updates in the coming months and expect to see more Monaco 2 information in the new year!

Happy Holidays!

My first look at Monaco 2 made me think that maybe crime could pay

ndy Schatz, the creator of Monaco, admits that Monaco 2 is “the ambitious version” of what the team tried to do with Monaco, the two games reading like the minimalist and maximalist version of the same design document. This heist-’em-up Monaco 2 might look shinier, but it’s channelling the exact same manic energy that made the original game so compelling...

Indie heist sim Monaco is getting a 3D sequel

In our 2013 review of the original Monaco, we called the indie heist sim "one of the best co-op games of all time." Monaco had fantastic, open-ended levels that helped its improvisational stealth co-op gameplay really shine. Of course, I always used the Mole to smash walls in a straight line through those levels and troll my friends, but the rich improvisational gameplay was there...

Cracking cooperative heist 'em up Monaco has a sequel coming

A sequel is coming for excellent cooperative heist game Monaco, publishers Humble Games announced today. Jim Rossignol's Monaco: What's Yours Is Mine review in 2013 was pretty straightforward: "This is one of the most important independent games this year, and might well end up being one of the best-loved games of the decade." I don't think it panned out quite that way, partially because indie games grew so larger and more mainstream than expected across the decade, but the IGF Grand Prize winner is still a cracking game. And Monaco 2 looks pretty.
