Panzer Corps 2: Axis Operations 1941 review - still the senior General

There is a question that every wargamer must ask themselves. A deep question, a probing question, the kind of question that dictates a lifetime of purchases. Do I like Panzer General-style games? They're almost a genre unto themselves, and whether or not they offer that tactical itch-scratching that all wargamers crave comes down to each individual - and how they feel about certain gameplay abstractions, and stylistic choices.

There is a lot to like in Panzer General-style wargames, and a lot to dislike, but nearly 30 years as a standard for hex-and-unit wargames means that they're definitely a part of this hobby that's not going anywhere.

Today's offering, a brand new DLC for Panzer Corps 2, highlights everything that is good and bad about these types of wargames, and whether or not this latest edition will be for you comes down to how frustrating or fun you feel the trickier bits of Panzer General-style games can be. Released only this week, the fourth DLC in Panzer Corps 2's Axis Operations series, 1941, brings players into the underrepresented invasion of Yugoslavia, before continuing on to Greece, and then the infamous Operation Barbarossa. Will the change of scenery be enough to warrant a look for those unsure of Panzer Corps 2's pedigree? Settle into that Panzer 38(t) and let's go find out!

Panzer Corps 2 - long live the king

Panzer Corps 2: Axis Operations - 1941 is available now

1941 was a crucial year in World War II.

Having secured western Europe, now the Wehrmacht looks east. The largest front in the war is about to open, and the biggest and most decisive battles are about to take place.

But not before taking a detour to the Balkans...

Axis Operations - 1941 brings the decisive battles of 1941 to Panzer Corps 2. Relive the invasion of the Balkans, of Greece and of the Soviet Union and fight both popular and more obscure battles in its 20 scenarios campaign.

As part of the Axis Operations series, you can decide to import a core army from the previous DLC, 1940, or play with a brand new army. You will also be able to export your core army at the conclusion of the 1941 campaign, and export it to the next DLC.

Panzer Corps 2 - v1.1.20 Update

We are releasing the update accompanying the release of Axis Operations: 1941.

The DLC will be released later today, at 3 pm GMT. In the meantime, you can read the full changelog down below.

It contains some improvements related to UI, but the main feature is the new online Tournament support.

Changelog:
- The game has been migrated to Unreal Engine 4.26
- Aircraft now don't spend movement points within 1 hex from their base. In practice this means that their movement zone is centered around the base, not their current position.
- Units in Reserve can now be upgraded
- The game will now display movement zone and combat predictions for selected enemy units.
- The game will now display movement zone over friendly units (such markers have an extra outline, compared to ordinary markers). If you don't like this feature, you can turn off this new functionality in Options (Display/UI -> Show move zone over friendly units)
- "Heroes" advanced option has been extended with a "Hero chance" slider which allows to fine tune how many heroes you will be getting in the course of the war, without turning them off completely
- It is now possible to give units partial green or elite replacements by Shift+clicking on one of Replace buttons.
- Added tournament support for Multiplayer, and tournament-related parameters to the Editor
- A number of crashes and bugs fixed
