Elroy and the Aliens (PC) Review

I’ve said it before, but surprises like Elroy and the Aliens are why I still enjoy being a video game critic. I try to stay as on top of interesting and fun-looking games as I can, but I’m only one man, and I can’t know everything. So when an opportunity slides across my desk to review something I’ve heard basically nothing about, it’s always an exciting venture to be surprised—for better or worse.

Elroy and the Aliens is a great game. An old-school point-and-click adventure bolstered by an interesting story and a ton of heart. In a way, it almost feels unbelievable—in this current videogame landscape, you shouldn’t be able to make something like this, let alone have it be half this good. Just more reason to keep an eye on the indie scene.

The story begins when the titular Elroy meets with a journalist named Peggy Wolfe to show her his new prototype rocket built for commercial travel. However, during the demonstration, a strange electrical discharge causes the rocket... Read more

Featuring also: an old banjo, a beaten-up Telecaster, and a rusty slide guitar — the perfect musical backdrop for a dusty desert stop, composed and arranged by Martin Bezjak from Epix Soundworks. 🌵

Behind the Scenes: Crafting Elroy's Art and Animation

Hey Friends! 👋

Urban, our man responsible for all the visual juiciness in Elroy and the Aliens (a.k.a. Art Director), is sharing a bit of the vision and challenges behind the game's colorful and vibrant cartoony art style.

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]

We always wanted the game to feel like you're playing your favorite childhood cartoon or adventure movie. 🎬 We started searching for inspiration in classics from the '80s and '90s, an era very close to us.

From a visual perspective, we’ve always been in love with LucasArts games, Hanna-Barbera cartoons, Spielberg movies, Disney classics, and so many other creations that trigger that special magical tingling — the one you got as a kid when you sat down in the living room on a Saturday morning and started watching your favorite cartoon. ✨

Speaking of inspiration, here’s some suuuuper early concept art of Elroy! It's taken from The Art of Elroy and the Aliens, a making-of book that we'll release later this year.

Urban got his first inspiration for Elroy's look from Disney's short film Paperman. Read more about it in the excerpt below.

Fast forward about 11 years... and here we are today! Just 13 days before the launch of the game on April 2nd! 🚀

We are so incredibly grateful to all of you who have supported Elroy and stuck with us through all these years. ❤️

If you haven't played the demo yet, now's your chance!
The Game's Mission
Why did we start hand-crafting Elroy 11 years ago? We wanted to revive that special feeling that happens only once, when you're a kid. When the eyes are wide open and full of wonder. When you're sitting in the living room on a Saturday morning and play THAT game on your parents' PC for the first time. 🤩

If you'd like to share your thoughts or feedback on the Demo with us, we have a nifty Steam Forum thread right here for you. Also, we'll keep the Demo live after Next Fest so you can try it when it suits you.
