Sonic the Hedgehog is in Fall Guys now, God help us

We thought the theme of Fall Guys Season 2 was medieval fantasy, but it turns out it's whatever the heck Mediatonic want it to be, because the developer of the battle royale multiplayer game starring hyper-competitive jumping beans has gone and added a Sonic the Hedgehog costume.

We've seen a few crossover costumes in Fall Guys already: you can play as Chell and P-Body from Portal, for example, and there's also one for Scout from Team Fortress 2. Now Mediatonic has teamed up with Sega to create a Sonic skin and it's... upsetting.

All the main elements of Sonic are present: there's the blue fur, the spiky back, the speedy red shoes, and the classic cartoon gloves. However, this is a costume for Fall Guys beans, and so Sonic's signature glare frames the beans' white faceplates, without there being a snout or mouth underneath it. The result is something far more menacing than any character we can recall seeing in Sonic canon to date. Another disquieting element of the outfit is the clearly visible line bisecting it into top and bottom halves.

Fall Guys' new skins let your chivalrous bean be a princess, jester, or horse

The unofficial Year of the Bean continues to go from strength to strength. The Among Us player count has reached over a million concurrent imposter and crewmate beans, and Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout is now so close to Season 1's finish line that not even the combined powers of Big Yeetus and Thicc Bonkus could knock it off track. Now, developer Mediatonic has revealed four new medieval-themed Season 2 skins, ready to let our chivalrous beans be the best darn beans they can be.

The four skins are as follows: first, there's an orc with scaly green skin, trying to look menacing but not really pulling it off because, you know, it's a Fall Guy. Next, there's a carnivalesque horse decked out in barding. Third, there's a colourful jester, complete with a jangly jester's cap. Finally, there's a princess with a golden tiara, the fanciest bean of all.

All this lines up with the medieval-themed stage we've already seen revealed. 'Knight Fever', as the stage is called, features swinging axes and spiked logs, sure to deflate your hopeful Guy in an instant.

Fall Guys season 2 release date

Fall Guys devs reveal 'Thicc Bonkus' as the name of Season 2's spiked roller hazard

Recently, Fall Guys developer Mediatonic released some gameplay footage for a new level called Knight Fever. With the game's medieval-themed Season 2 on the way in just a couple of days, this teaser for things to come whet plenty of appetites, including ours here at PC Gamer. Not the type to be content with just one source of hype when they could have many, Mediatonic then took to the popular Fall Guys Twitter account to share some more juicy details of what to expect in the forthcoming update. First up came the announcement (slightly ahead of the gameplay footage, as it happens) that, due to popular fan request, costume randomisation would be added in Season 2. The suggestion came courtesy of the Fall Guys Discord server, where fans are invited to vote on community suggestions in order to influence the ongoing development of the game. And speaking of community suggestions, we haven't even talked about Thicc Bonkus yet. In the same spirit as the Big Yeetus hammer which was added via an update late in Season 1, Thicc Bonkus is a spiked pendulum designed to level the playing field a bit (maybe literally) by sweeping in and knocking your jelly bean off its feet—and possibly right out of the competition—if you're not careful about timing yourself to avoid it. Though we already knew that Season 2 would feature a spiked roller, the reveal of its moniker is sure to raise a few eyebrows. Allegedly named by the Fall Guys community rather than the developers, there's nothing particularly unwholesome about Thicc Bonkus, and yet all the same I can't help but hope that my parents aren't reading this article. Like the rest of the new content, this Boaty McBoatface of Fall Guys features will be added to the game with the new season update on October 8th.
