Fall Guys has already hit 120k concurrent players

The Fall Guys have arrived, and it turns out they're super popular. Medatonic's lighthearted mashup of physical game shows and battle royale launched today on Steam and PlayStation 4, and has already hit 120,000 concurrent users across both platforms.

"Just spoke to my friends in the server team and we have at least 120k people connected to the game right now," someone on the Mediatonic team tweeted on the official Fall Guys account shortly after launch. "We're currently BEEFING up our servers to cope with all of the BEANS who want to fall." According to SteamDB, Steam accounted for as many as 56,032 of those players.

Good news, certainly: Fall Guys is an elimination contest that begins with 60 players (rather than the traditional hundred), and a healthy player count means shorter queue times for matches. If our time with the beta taught us anything, it's that getting knocked out of Fall Guys happens a lot - but you'll generally want to rush right back in and try again.

Here's a man trying to beat Fall Guys using jelly beans

After the first beta was a huge success, Fall Guys is running a second one this weekend, and players are starting to get creative about how they tackle the colourful battle royale game's obstacles. One person has taken the rainbow aesthetic to heart, and decided to compete using a controller made out of jelly beans.

The contraption comes from Dylan 'Rudeism' Beck, a Twitch streamer that specialises in making bizarre controllers. In this instance, he's wired a bunch of jelly beans to a circuit board, and each bean represents a different movement or action. The beans are touch sensitive, so playing is somewhat like using a touchscreen keyboard, except squishier.

A video demonstration from Beck's Twitch stream was shared by the Fall Guys Twitter account, showing him tackling a stage where you've to avoid the gaps on a rotating platform. He's determined to get a win on the multiplayer game using the deliciously sugary joypad, and you can keep an eye on his stream to find out if he makes it. Judging by his performance in the clip, that might not be too unrealistic a possibility. Late last year, he went viral by playing Untitled Goose Game using controls that meant he had to act like a goose.

After a wildly successful beta, Fall Guys is holding another one

July 29, 2020 Fall Guys will be running a second beta test.

This weekend, rainbow-coloured quasi-battle royale game Fall Guys held its first public beta, and to call it a success would be an understatement. The 60-player party game from developer Mediatonic shot up the Twitch and Steam charts, briefly holding the top position on the former, while floating around the top ten in the latter.

The beta started on Friday, July 25, and ran though to Sunday, July 27, and from moment go it was clear demand was high. Streamers and content creators gave away codes consistently, and Mediatonic has struggled to keep up with the number of requests. As much is reflected in the stats, Fall Guys peaking at number six in the Steam top sellers list, and, for just a fleeting moment, getting all the way to number one on Twitch, beating out the likes of Fortnite, Grand Theft Auto V, and League of Legends.

It's since fallen, sitting at 11 on the Steam charts, and 25 on Twitch, at time of initial writing. Everyone's moving on since the beta ended Sunday evening, but that's some impressive momentum for an indie game.
