2023's best space game reveals big upgrades for its next free update

Despite the launch of Starfield and big updates to No Man's Sky, Star Citizen, and Stellaris over the course of last year, 2023's best space game, and the one that won my heart, was a smaller name. Everspace 2 delivers space combat the way you imagine it in your head - fast, frantic, and furious. Its sense of exploration and loot-driven RPG systems mean it has as much in common with games like Diablo 4 and Last Epoch as it does Bethesda's interstellar epic, and as we await the next big free update coming in spring, developer Rockfish Games appeases us with a look at some of the legendary gear coming our way for us to upgrade our ship with.

Incursions Legendary Look

Greetings Pilots!

If you missed it, ROCKFISH Games celebrated the studio’s 10th anniversary not too long ago. Our CEO and Creative Director sat down to chat about the journey so far and how the EVERSPACE series came to be.

It’s been a quiet few weeks communications-wise as the team’s been busy working on the content of our big Spring update and the ongoing migration to Unreal Engine 5.

We know you all want this update NOW, but great things take time. To help hold you over, today we’re pulling back the gamedev curtain a little bit on a few of the new legendaries that EVERSPACE 2 pilots will be able to find in endgame rifts, by playing on nightmare difficulty, through new legendary signal decoders, and as part of a new combat challenge feature.

Read on for a sneak peek at five of the new legendaries coming in Incursions.

Pictured at the top of the blog post, the Ritual homing missile launcher unleashes a flurry of explosives hellbent on destroying everything targeted. With damage increased for each targeted enemy, it’s great for tackling a whole squadron of smaller foes head-on. This legendary is a Itano Circus callback to the Seeker Missile Battery item from EVERSPACE. Any Macross/Robotech fans in the house?

Some new legendary gear focuses on modifying the effects of consumable items and devices. Epicenter is great for players who love the Teleporter as it detonates a shockwave blast, dealing kinetic and energy damage to nearby enemies. A quick getaway can leave wreckage in your wake.

How many turrets are too many? “Twenty-three” says the dev team.

Ever wish you could put enemy ships in their own personal bullet hell? Now you can! When Fields of Mayhem is equipped, your ship can create up to twenty-two Sticky Turrets with increased range. Just make sure you have a Sticky Turret in your consumables bar—the effect won’t trigger without it.

Pestilence makes the Annihilator Virus warfare device even more deadly. In addition to adding another round of damage, it adds a second infection period, allowing the infected ship to spread the virus even further.

This legendary thermo gun takes the target-seeking nature of the weapon and cranks it up to eleven by allowing shots to hit multiple targets. Packs of enemies stand no chance against a ship armed with the Hunter’s Fang.

Clever EVERSPACE 2 pilots may have already picked up that each of the legendaries highlighted in this post provides a different way to handle hordes of enemies—something that might be important in Incursions. ;)

Each of these make for a deadly addition to any arsenal, and there are plenty more to come. Also, Incursions will allow all players to have an additional piece of legendary gear equipped for all ships, and there will be ways to push past that limit. We know this is a much-asked-for tweak, and with the variety of new types of legendaries coming in this update, our designers feel it’s a good change. Stay tuned for more information about the contents of our upcoming update in the weeks ahead.

A Decade In Space: ROCKFISH Games Turns Ten!

On February 17th, ROCKFISH Games celebrated an amazing 10 years as a company. What a decade it’s been!

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]
In this time, our small team has released two breakout titles, spectacular expansion content, and a sizable number of community-focused updates bringing fixes, tweaks, and features to the EVERSPACE series. We’ve grown to a studio of just over thirty, with team members scattered around the world. We’ve created an amazing global community filled with enthusiastic space game fans who thrive on our transparent communication. And we’ve formed strong bonds with the biggest platforms and hardware makers—partnerships that form the foundations of our future.

What makes ROCKFISH Games is our team. We could not have done this without the handful of creative developers who followed Christian and I from our previous venture, most of whom are still with us today, and the team members who have joined us over the years since we opened our studio’s doors. We’ve made it our goal to find and keep great people who want to make exciting space games, sometimes turning down risky opportunities to ensure our team is protected from the turbulence that buffets the gaming industry in cycles—we’ve dodged quite a few bullets here.

The ROCKFISH Games of today was forged from a love for space games, and a series of tough situations turned golden. When ROCKFISH began, we used the lessons learned in our prior experience creating the Galaxy on Fire series. Like many indie studios, we turned to crowdfunding and working with the community as a way to bring our vision to light, and that was the best thing we could have done at the time.

Our independence became a core strength of the studio. We’ve spent time building internal expertise and finding the right partners to work with. With these strengths to lean on, we can place our trust in the team to build amazing things without overbearing oversight, giving them the freedom to create and opportunities to grow by engaging the latest technology as it becomes available.

EVERSPACE hit at just the right time. Rogue-likes were on the upswing in popularity, and our space shooter twist clicked with fans from our GoF days and new players across the globe. Our DLC follow-up, EVERSPACE: Encounters, added much more to the game, including some fan-favorite characters—to this day, we’re still asked by the community to make Elek plushies. Perhaps someday we’ll do so.

It is from these beginnings in community development that we built the foundations of our communications style with weekly live streams during development and frequent, in-detail blog posts on Steam and Kickstarter, plus a sizable demo kept up to date with the latest state of development. We favor transparency, though we cannot share everything, and through this have created a reputation for quality among space game fans. We hear what’s asked of us and frequently deliver changes and community-requested features while holding true to our vision.

Our journey through Early Access with EVERSPACE 2 these last few years has been an exciting one. Pivoting from our rogue-like roots to an open-world action RPG looter shooter was a risk we were willing to take, as this game is so much closer to what we’d originally envisioned for our EVERSPACE series. I’m glad to see that players around the world were so on board with this shift, and it certainly resonated with the media as well. Strong early reviews and consistent coverage kept us in the limelight as the game became bigger and better—our 1.0 launch went even better than our first game, and we’re still receiving strong support from fans of the genre.

Apart from the commercial success that enables us to continue doing what we love, the biggest reward for everyone at ROCKFISH is to see so much positive feedback about our hard work from fans of the genre. We still have so many fresh ideas, so many amazing stories left to tell, and fantastic adventures lined up for space fans around the globe.

To Christian, thank you for being my partner in this adventure. To the team, I’m looking forward to another 10 years with you all. We’re going to continue creating incredible things together.

Everspace 2 is getting a free Unreal Engine 5 upgrade to make future updates and expansions easier

Rockfish have announced that they're updating arcade dogfighter Everspace 2 to run on Unreal Engine 5. The engine rollover will arrive as part of or alongside the game's Incursions update in spring 2024, which includes tweaks and bugfixes as well as extra legendary items and a new game feature of some description. The idea is less to take advantage of UE5's various whizbangs and bellwhistles, like the new Nanite geometry system, than to grease the launch chutes for future Everspace 2 updates and expansions.
