Skill Upgrading

Skill upgrades are something we've wanted to implement for awhile now so here we go! With Evee's help, every skill can be upgraded in multiple ways and once they're unlocked, they can be equipped in any order.
Mix and match upgrades for awesome and powerful synergies!








PAX Competition Mode

The PAX Competition was such a big success in Boston that we decided to make it available for everyone! Access the new mode via the Main Menu!

[h3]Skill Upgrades[/h3]
Upgrades include 3 specific upgrades and 1 Ultimate upgrade for each skill as well as a handful of general upgrades that can be applied to any skill.

[h3]General Upgrades[/h3]
  • Upgrade 1 - Increases crit chance
  • Upgrade 2 - Increases damage
  • Upgrade 3 - Adds 1 additional charge
  • Upgrade 4 - Defeating an enemy with a skill heals
  • Upgrade 5 - Reduces the number of hits to refresh
[h3]Ember Fire[/h3]
  • Upgrade I - Increases the range
  • Upgrade II - Burst an additional cone of mystical flame behind the Knight
  • Upgrade III - Shoots 3 fireballs in a spread shot
  • Ultimate Upgrade - Whenever you burn an enemy with Ember Fire, your burn effects deal increased damage
[h3]Blast Bomb[/h3]
  • Upgrade I - Enemies hit by your Blast Bomb are rooted
  • Upgrade II - Your bombs pull enemies towards them before exploding
  • Upgrade III - Throws 3 bombs in a row
  • Ultimate Upgrade - Bombs explode into 3 smaller cluster bombs
[h3]Arcane Bolts[/h3]
  • Upgrade I - Your bolts become ghosts. Whenever you defeat an enemy with a ghost bolt, another is summoned to seek and damage additional enemies
  • Upgrade II - Your bolts are imbued with a random element of burn, freeze, poison, or lightning
  • Upgrade III - Your bolts release in an expanding circle
  • Ultimate Upgrade - Arcane Bolts refreshes quicker
[h3]Rupture[/h3]
  • Upgrade I - The ground is ruptured dealing damage over time
  • Upgrade II - Whenever you cast a perfect Rupture, the outer ring is cast an additional time
  • Upgrade III - You gain Max HP for each enemy defeated by Rupture. Enemies have a chance to turn into a potato
  • Ultimate Upgrade - Enemies below a certain HP are instantly defeated by Rupture
[h3]Chakram[/h3]
  • Upgrade I - Increases crit chance of Chakram. Whenever Chakram crits, it freezes
  • Upgrade II - Whenever Chakram bounces off the Knight, their next weapon attack is a guaranteed crit
  • Upgrade III - Whenever you cast a perfect Chakram, your first hit is a crit
  • Ultimate Upgrade - Chakram hits count towards refreshing skills
[h3]Knight's Charge[/h3]
  • Upgrade I - Whenever you cast a perfect Knight's Charge, a meteor is summoned at the target location that deals damage and burn
  • Upgrade II - Leaves a trail of fire that burns enemies
  • Upgrade III - Your Knight's Charge is a decoy projectile that stuns enemies
  • Ultimate Upgrade - Whenever 3 or more enemies are hit by a perfect Knight's Charge, it refreshes
[h3]Warrior Wisps[/h3]
  • Upgrade I - Increases max Wisps by 1. Wisps no longer have a lifetime
  • Upgrade II - You gain weapon damage for each Wisp you have
  • Upgrade III - Whenever a Wisp is defeated, each Knight is healed
  • Ultimate Upgrade - Increases damage, speed, and HP for all Wisps
[h3]Frost Wall[/h3]
  • Upgrade I - Whenever an enemy is defeated by Frost Wall, they explode dealing damage and freeze enemies behind them
  • Upgrade II - Increases Frost Wall damage and freezes enemies that contact the Frost Wall
  • Upgrade III - Your Frost Wall is an expanding ice ring dealing damage and freeze
  • Ultimate Upgrade - Your Frost Wall permanently freezes elite and champion enemies
[h3]Cyclone[/h3]
  • Upgrade I - You gain move speed for each active Cyclone
  • Upgrade II - Whenever a Cyclone dies, lightning is summoned
  • Upgrade III - Your Cyclone stays with the Knight and no longer pulls enemies
  • Ultimate Upgrade - Chunks of earth are thrown dealing damage
[h3]Hailstone Armor[/h3]
  • Upgrade I - Thrown snowballs create an ice spike dealing AOE damage around the target
  • Upgrade II - Gain a passive aura that slows enemies around you
  • Upgrade III - Whenever you cast a perfect Hailstone Armor, you become temporarily invulnerable
  • Ultimate Upgrade - Whenever you cast a perfect Hailstone Armor, you gain armor. Also releases a frost nova that freezes
[h3]Ballista[/h3]
  • Upgrade I - Your Ballista is imbued with a random element of burn, freeze, poison, or lightning
  • Upgrade II - Your Ballista shoots a spread of 3 arrows
  • Upgrade III - Whenever an enemy is damaged by Ballista, you heal
  • Ultimate Upgrade - Ballista can be picked up. Whenever it's picked up, it refreshes
[h3]Phantom Spear[/h3]
  • Upgrade I - Deals bonus damage for each poisoned enemy
  • Upgrade II - Your Phantom Spear explodes dealing AOE damage
  • Upgrade III - Enemies hit by Phantom Spear are dealt max poison stacks
  • Ultimate Upgrade - Enemies hit by Phantom Spear are haunted and spawn a ghost when defeated by Phantom Spear
[h3]Arcane Orb[/h3]
  • Upgrade I - Arcane Orb refreshes quicker
  • Upgrade II - Arcane Orb is a cone of damage
  • Upgrade III - Whenever Arcane Orb refreshes, 3 seeking orbs are summoned
  • Ultimate Upgrade - Whenever charging, multiple seeking orbs are released

  • Upgrade I - Summons an additional set of lightning bolts

  • Ultimate Upgrade - Gain a static aura that deals AOE damage
[h3]Seek and Destroy[/h3]
  • Upgrade I - Your drill stays in place and deals AOE damage
  • Upgrade II - Whenever an enemy is defeated with your drill, each Knight is healed
  • Upgrade III - Enemies hit by your drill are rooted
  • Ultimate Upgrade - Your drill will seek indefinitely until it fails to defeat a target
[h3]Cloak and Dagger[/h3]
  • Upgrade I - Your Dagger is replaced with 3 Daggers that attack in a cone
  • Upgrade II - Whenever entering or exiting invisibility, conjure up to 3 lightning bolts
  • Upgrade III - While invisible, unleash ghosts to seek and damage enemies. Enemies hit by your Dagger attack are haunted
  • Ultimate Upgrade - Whenever entering or exiting invisibility, your next weapon attack is a guaranteed crit and deals increased damage
[h3]Arlan's Lucky Dice[/h3]
  • Upgrade I - Rolling a 1 also conjures a food and rolling a 2 also conjures a gem
  • Upgrade II - Rolling a 3 also summons a Wisp and rolling a 4 also summons a Ballista
  • Upgrade III - The chance of rolling a 5 or 6 are doubled
  • Ultimate Upgrade - Rolls a second of Arlan's Lucky Dice

  • Upgrade I - Conjure a beam to pierce and pull enemies towards a black hole
  • Upgrade II - Enemies hit by Gravity Well are frozen and no longer stunned
  • Upgrade III - Gravity Well ends with an explosion of chain lightning that seeks other enemies

  • Fixed a multiplayer bug that was preventing players from reconnecting in Netherra if all the stat gem rooms were cleared
  • Fixed a bug that was causing players to get stuck when their controller disconnects the moment a boss is defeated and the north door opens 🔥
  • Fixed a visual issue with Praxis where he would leap offscreen if he loses his target at the start of his claw attack
  • Fixed a bug with Guardian Angel where Praxis enemies could still kill the player 🔥

It’s been a minute since our last Nexus News but rest assured, we’ve been as busy as ever!

2024 is going to be a massive year for Doom Turtle but before we dive into the huge new updates, let’s talk about our recent trip to Boston for PAX East!

This was the first time that we attended a PAX event and without exaggeration, it was amazing. To be able to meet and chat with so many passionate Ember Knights players was an incredible experience! We talked about new content and features, ran a bunch of exciting competitions, gave away a ton of keys, and even posed for a picture or two!

[h2]NEW GAME - LEGENDS OF STARKADIA[/h2]

But, we didn't dedicate our booth to just Ember Knights. We also unveiled our newest game, Legends of Starkadia!

Around the time we launched Ember Knights 1.0, we split our small studio into 2 even smaller teams. While half of us have been continuing to support Ember Knights, half of us have been working on Legends of Starkadia.

When one bored Earthling teen is accidentally teleported to the far flung Starkadian Empire, he lands face first in the middle of an interdimensional battle between good and evil, with the fate of the universe at stake! Now it’s up to him and a ragtag bunch of misfits to defeat the shadowy, extradimensional armies of the Empire and become the heroes the system needs.

Stay alert as you fight your way through Wightsbury as there's a strange new crystal floating around and it'll be this very crystal that Evee needs to finally upgrade her Skill Convergence!


Once you've unlocked Skill Upgrading, you'll be able to use your Ash to unlock various upgrades for each skill.


Once an upgrade has been unlocked, it can now appear in Skill Rooms and Skill Selectors!


Here, we have good old White Knight showing off their fancy new Ember Fire upgrade!



But that's not all!

[h2]UPDATE 1.5 - FOR THE PLAYERS[/h2]
This is the update before THE update and the perfect opportunity to tie off any loose ends.

Have you been wanting a particular feature that hasn't made its way into the game?
Do you keep seeing a cool new idea that seems like an obvious addition?
Are you wondering if we even read all the player suggestions?
Well, we do and this could be the update for you!



The For The Players Update is the update where we're putting in some of the most requested features and that includes the number one player requested feature, the much coveted Save & Quit!
That's right, endless looping will now be a lot less daunting as you battle to restore peace to the universe, take a well-deserved break, and then return to repeat the work fit for a hero!

Hotfix Update v1.3.1

Hello, Knights!

We hope everyone is enjoying all the new content and features in the Praxis Returns Update!

As usual, we've found a few minor issues and felt it was better to get them fixed now rather than waiting for Update 1.4, our next scheduled update.
Please see below for everything that's included in this hotfix patch!

[h3]Balancing & Minor Adjustments[/h3]
  • Adjusted the values on the following difficulty modifiers:
    • Horde, Ruin (previously Bane), Haste
      • Tier 1 - No change
      • Tier 2 - No change
      • Tier 3 - 200% > 225%
      • Tier 4 - No change
    • Onslaught
      • Tier 1 - 115% > 125%
      • Tier 2 - 135% > 150%
      • Tier 3 - 150% > 175%

  • Renamed difficulty modifier Bane to Ruin
  • Updated Ultembera to shoot projectiles for all the Rift Hammer attacks

  • Fixed a visual issue with the Void Mantle orbs where the VFX can get turned off when skipping cutscenes in Netherra 🔥
  • Fixed a few visual issues with Void Mantle on the awards screen and Netherra’s 8 portal clear buff 🔥
  • Fixed a visual issue with the HUD version of the Void Mantle 🔥
  • Fixed a few issues with the Praxis fight where he could keep a status effect after the first phase
  • Fixed a visual bug with Oakbane where it was showing a different palette when frozen 🔥

  • Fixed an issue with Bane of Shrouding where it wouldn’t properly snap to the player in wider screen resolutions
  • Fixed a few visual issues with with Banes and Boons in shops
  • Fixed an issue where toggling the HUD off and on while a skill slot is locked would cause the locked slot to no longer appear
  • Fixed another visual issue with the skill slot where dying and reconnecting after a skill disabler would cause the slot to flash the lock animation
  • Fixed a visual bug on the game over screen where it would only show the Ember Blade icon when unlocking the Amplified skin for other weapons 🔥
  • Fixed a bug in endless looping where Praxis was not returning on subsequent loops to apply his additional attacks 🔥

And Happy New Year!
We hope everyone is ready to start 2024 off with the action-packed Praxis Returns Update!
The evil influence of Praxis is stronger than ever!

Void Mantle

With the constant threat of Praxis rising, we felt it was necessary to add another weapon, inspired by the evil one himself.
Harness the powers of Praxis with the all new Void Mantle!

Note: Since the Void Mantle harnesses the powers of Praxis, you'll need to defeat Praxis to unlock it. If you've already defeated Praxis, it should automatically be available.


Praxis Curses

Wightsbury just became more deadly...and more interesting? Here, you'll find curses - each bringing a new challenge to your plight, but don't fret, once the curse has been equipped, you'll also receive an immediate benefit. After the curse has been cleared, the unique benefit will persist for the rest of your run!


See below for a specific functionality that was removed but has since been returned in the form of a cleansed curse!


Praxis Effects

In addition to the Praxis-buffed enemies, we've added a bunch of new and deadly attacks that Praxis can do throughout your run to keep you on your toes. These random attacks add a noticeable increase to the difficulty so we've decided to add this feature as a new difficulty modifier. If you want this additional challenge, be sure to turn this modifier on and if not, no sweat!




Weapon Challenges, Skins, & Achievements

Weapon customization is a feature we've had requested quite a bit and we loved the idea so much that we decided to add it!
Complete a special weapon challenge to unlock a unique weapon skin and brand new Steam achievement!

[h3]Void Mantle[/h3]
The 7th weapon has arrived and it introduces a fun new way to continue the battle against Praxis!
[h3]Void Mantle Mods[/h3]
  • Orb Burst - Your 3rd attack shoots 2 additional orbs
  • Orb Weaver - Your chain attacks have seeking
  • Laser Focus - Your charge attack is now a laser beam
  • Dark Spell: Dark Star - A dark spell that creates a black hole and casts meteor
  • Dark Spell: Celestial Tear - A dark spell that instantly kills a non-boss enemy
  • Dark Spell: Darkening - A dark spell that summons 2 lightning bolts that damage enemies
  • Ghostly Image - Whenever you dodge, summon a dark clone to attack nearby enemies
  • Phantom Pulse - Whenever you dodge, summon a dark clone that deals AOE damage around it
  • Grim Duality - Whenever you dodge, summon a dark clone that when defeated, casts a dark spell
  • Void Field - Your dark spells have a 5% chance to instantly kill all non-boss enemies


[h3]Praxis Curses 🔥[/h3]
Wightsbury now includes a bunch of new cursed relics. Players will have the choice of selecting a temporary bane/boon combo. After clearing Wightsbury, the curse is lifted but the boon will remain for the rest of the run!
  • Bane/Boon of Agility - Your move speed is reduced to half/You can quickly dodge twice
  • Bane/Boon of Fortification - You can no longer dodge/Chain attacks destroy projectiles
  • Bane/Boon of Leeching - You can no longer heal from items or healing rooms/Defeating an enemy heals you
  • Bane/Boon of the Wights - All rooms are Wight rooms/Whenever you dodge an attack, haunt a random enemy
  • Bane/Boon of the Deal - Randomly replaces your relics and skills. Repeats after defeating a boss or miniboss/Whenever you gain a relic, upgrade it if possible
  • Bane/Boon of Shrouding - Except around you, darkness engulfs each room/You have a chance to ignore damage
  • Bane/Boon of Mortality - Whenever you receive damage, you lose that much max HP/Whenever you defeat a boss or miniboss, increase your max HP
  • Bane/Boon of Wisdom - Your second skill slot is locked/Your first skill slot gains additional charges


[h3]Praxis Effects - New Difficulty Modifier[/h3]
In addition to the buffed effect, Praxis has expanded his power with new mid-run attacks. These random attacks can be turned on and customized via the Tyrant difficulty modifier.
  • Suppression Obelisk - An obelisk appears that disables skills while active
  • Celestial Impact - Deadly meteors rain down from above
  • Plasma Barrage - Praxis claws appear and fire orbs
  • Void Vortex - Black holes appear that pull and damage
  • Dark Matter Beam - Praxis claws appear and fire lasers


[h3]Weapon Challenges, Skins, & Achievements[/h3]
For additional Knight customization, players will have 35 weapon skins that can be equipped. To unlock each skin, a unique and weapon-specific challenge must be completed.
Once each challenge is completed, an associated Steam achievement will be awarded.
  • Ember Blade
    • Amplified Ember Blade Challenge - Unlock all weapon mods for the Ember Blade
    • Untouchable Challenge - Complete a world without taking damage with the Ember Blade
    • Radiant Ember Blade Challenge - Complete a run with 25 difficulty modifier levels active with the Ember Blade
    • Master Challenge - Complete a run without reviving with the Ember Blade
    • Umbral Ember Blade Challenge - Defeat 1000 enemies with the Ember Blade
  • Guardian Bow
    • Amplified Guardian Bow Challenge - Unlock all weapon mods for the Guardian Bow
    • Bullseye Challenge - Damage enemies with 50 perfect charge attacks in a row with the Guardian Bow
    • Radiant Guardian Bow Challenge - Complete a run with 25 difficulty modifier levels active with the Guardian Bow
    • Swift Challenge - Complete a run gathering 4 of Evee’s care packages with the Guardian Bow
    • Umbral Guardian Bow Challenge - Defeat 1000 enemies with the Guardian Bow
  • Nexal Staff
    • Amplified Nexal Staff Challenge - Unlock all weapon mods for the Nexal Staff
    • Eldritch Challenge - Refresh a skill 50 times on a run with the Nexal Staff
    • Radiant Nexal Staff Challenge - Complete a run with 25 difficulty modifier levels active with the Nexal Staff
    • Maelstrom Challenge - Deal 100 damage in one hit with a skill with the Nexal Staff

To help make each fight more distinct, we've reworked a lot of the final Praxis fight. These changes should increase the difficulty but also make the fight much more unique and fun.
We also added a new music track for this fight!

[h3]Misc[/h3]
  • Reworked Igna Za by enabling its rear to be vulnerable and reduced its travel distance, attack radius, and damage aura 🔥
  • Reworked Glacial Bruma by reducing the number of ice waves, slowing the speed of the permafrost attack, and removed the ability for that attack to freeze players 🔥
  • Reworked Overlord Mack by increasing the attack cooldowns for the bouncing projectile, charged spike, and energy blast attacks to help reduce the number of projectiles visible at any given time and removed the laser drones from spawning during its first phase and improved its attack indicators 🔥
  • Swapped the order of the Mirror and Graveyard attacks during the third phase of the Poltergeist boss fight
  • Updated boss drops from 2 small stat gems to 1 large stat gem and miniboss drops from 1 large stat gem to 2 small stat gems
  • Increased the charge attack speed and added the ability to move while charging the Guardian Bow
  • Increased the charge attack speed and increased the damage multiplier for the Rift Hammer
  • Adjusted the tipper damage for the Razor Wind
  • Updated Razor Wind's Empowered mod to function similar to Guardian Bow's Empowered Arrows mod
  • Reduced the move speed and reduced the full heal when enemies become supercharged 🔥
  • Updated Pristine Band, Flawless Brace, Absolute Ambition to reward each player when perfectly clearing a room 🔥
  • Updated Bob's Containment Field functionality to include a cooldown 🔥
  • Increased the lightning chance, growth, and max owned for Tainted Conduit 🔥
  • Added an icon to the HUD for the Ember Tree upgrade Guardian Angel 🔥
  • Updated Ember Tree upgrade Keen Eye to also trigger on miniboss deaths
  • Updated Ember Tree upgrade Bonus Gems to drop a small stat gem for bosses and minibosses
  • Updated Ember Tree upgrade Perfection to also include minibosses
  • Updated Ember Tree upgrade Super Reroll to reset at the start of each world
  • A bunch of improvements to various descriptions throughout the game


[h2]Bug Fixes[/h2]
Last but not least, we fixed a bunch of issues.
  • Fixed some issues that arise during endless looping 🔥
    We'd like to extend a really big thank you to our players who provided their time and feedback to help address this issue! ❤️
  • Fixed a multiplayer bug with the Relic Refinement drop that was causing 4-player local games to freeze after making the relic selections 🔥
  • Fixed an issue with the Relic Refinement UI where one player scrolling the list of relics would cause the list to scroll for all players 🔥
  • Fixed an issue where players were avoiding cutscenes while charging the Razor Wind
  • Fixed an issue where players were avoiding cutscenes while equipped with the Ember Blade and holding the Flurry charge attack 🔥
  • Fixed an issue with the Razor Wind's Burgeoning mod where it would not increase the projectile size when hitting an enemy if Empowered is also equipped 🔥
  • Fixed a bug with the Rift Hammer's Unstable Rift mod that was allowing some bosses to become stunned 🔥
  • Fixed a bug with Reaper's Toll where it was not performing multiple charge attacks in a row
  • Fixed a minor issue with the Perfectionist charge attack
  • Fixed a few issues related to the presentation of “New” relics 🔥
  • Fixed a bug with Barrier Pendant where the player could still take damage 🔥
  • Fixed a bug with Eye of the Storm where the previous projectile wasn't clearing properly
  • Fixed an issue with Decayed Scepter where poison was only getting applied from perfectly casting pets
  • Fixed a bug with the Arcane Orb where it wasn’t triggering Supreme Ambition
  • Fixed a bug with Guardian Angel where it wasn't taking into account the player's armor 🔥
  • Fixed a rare bug where Praxis could disappear during the fight if he picked an invalid teleport location at the end of some attacks
  • Fixed an issue where Praxis minibosses return to their default state after being frozen
  • Fixed a visual issue with the Wightsbury bosses where the Haunted Stakes could remain visible if killed while frozen
  • Fixed an issue where some enemies would become invisible when frozen
  • Fixed a few minor visual issues with the planets on the world loading screens
  • A bunch of localization improvements 🔥

Hotfix Update v1.2.1

Hello, Knights!

As big of an update as Knights Reforged is, we had a surprisingly small amount of issues. However, there were some and thanks to your help, we identified and fixed a handful. Please take a look at the issues we fixed in this hotfix patch!

  • Adjusted various Ember Tree upgrade costs
  • Updated a few enemy values for endless looping
    • Loop 1
      • Enemy Health - 400% (was 200%)
    • Loop 2
      • Enemy Health - 800% (was 400%)
    • Loops 3+
      • Enemy Health - continues to double on every loop
      • Enemy Damage - continues to double on every loop
  • Note: No change to scaling on enemy attack speed, move speed, or spawning

[h3]Fixes[/h3]
  • Fixed a bug with the Ember Blade where attacks couldn't be canceled by rolling 🔥
  • Fixed a bug with Doppleganger’s seeking projectiles that prevented them from spawning 🔥
  • Fixed a bug with Cleanup Crew that was causing voltage traps to be destroyed when one of the minibosses is defeated 🔥
  • Fixed a bug with Praxis where he could dash or teleport out of bounds 🔥
  • Fixed a bug where the revive prompt wasn’t clearing after being revived by defeating a miniboss or boss 🔥
  • Fixed a bug with Super Rerolls where it was causing the game to lock when used in the Relic Refinement selectors and shops 🔥
  • Fixed a bug with Absolute Ambition where it was multiplying its skill damage increase 🔥
  • Fixed a bug with Steward’s Gift where it wasn’t spawning the Steward properly
  • Fixed a bug with the Ember Tree’s Bonus Gems upgrade where it was showing the wrong icon when locked
  • Fixed some visual issues with overlapping elements in the Ember Tree
  • Fixed a bug that was preventing costs from showing in the swap menu of the Ember Tree
  • Fixed a bug that was causing the Perfect Room and Perfect Boss banners to stop animating when the game is paused or the player inventory is viewed 🔥
  • Fixed a multiplayer bug where Perfect Rooms and Perfect Bosses were desyncing between the host and clients
