2021 delivered some big twists to the familiar survival game formula

I have a love-hate relationship with survival games. I'll get deep into them for a good long while before abruptly realizing I am sick of chopping down trees. And then I'll go cold on the genre for a while. Eventually, I'll remember how much I love survival and get drawn back in again, even if it means sharpening an ax and clearing yet another forest...

Icarus Week Three Update | Agriculture & Survey

Continuing our pattern of regular content updates, our two new prospects encourage you to leave the safety of your base and traverse Icarus’ wilderness. One is accessible earlier in the game while the other suits more experienced characters equipped to weather the worst storms.

Earlier this week we restored over 60'000 characters that were left behind on prospects after time ran out. This could be due to players not realizing that Icarus’ mission timer counts down in real time or cases where bugs and server issues preventing them from leaving in time. This restoration was our way of apologizing and making things right with players who lost their characters unfairly. Read more about that here.

Survival game Icarus brings 64,000 lost and dead characters back to life

When you die in survival game Icarus, it's not the end. You can respawn and collect your dropped gear or a teammate can revive you. But there is permadeath in Icarus, too. If your mission timer runs out and you don't make it back to your drop pod in time, your character is lost forever, along with all their learned skills and progress. You definitely do not want to miss your rocket ride into space...

Happy Christmas | Your Abandoned Characters have been Revived!

Hey Prospectors,

We have a Christmas miracle for you today, something we’ve been quietly working on for the past few weeks in response to one of our most sought-after player requests.

You may be surprised to see any characters that were abandoned on a drop have reappeared in your Character Select screen!

We have revived 22,000 characters and 42,000 dead characters that were left behind on prospects after time ran out. Icarus may be unforgiving, but we are not.

There are a number of ways you could have lost your character and your hard-earned XP, talents and blueprints, such as bugs that trap characters (hopefully since resolved in our hotfixes and updates) or server downtime. We may not have been clear enough to new players learning the game that unless you return to your dropship before the timer expires, then you lose your character permanently - abandoned on the planet surface. While these issues don’t affect all players, when you lose a character unfairly it hurts.

So, this week we worked on a tool to restore everyone’s characters that had been left behind on a drop.
As of last night's hotfix, the Character Select screen can show more than three character slots. Your restored characters may take you over this limit, but you cannot create any new characters until you delete some old ones.

If you have any questions about this process, or about character loss in general, please feel free to come chat to us in our Discord. We have a helpful community along with a team of passionate developers who would love to help.

If you deleted your character normally, those won’t be restored.

This restoration is a one-off event to acknowledge the inconvenience for anyone who lost a character.
Thank you everyone for your support and constructive feedback since Icarus’ launch. It means the world to us that we have a community so passionate about the game and what we do.

Merry Christmas Prospectors, stay safe out there.
