Community Update #1 - Blast off!

Welcome to our very first Community Update

In the past few months, we have ramped up our community presence by hiring our Community Manager Lorii, who has nestled herself deep into our Discord and other social media to get to know everyone and spread the word!

Tangentially, we have boosted the amount of content we're releasing, including our new trailer Icarus: No Rescue, to The Making of Icarus developer vlogs and our regular Twitch streams.

We strive to be open and transparent with our game development, creating a two-way relationship. The feedback we have received on all fronts has been overwhelmingly positive and we’re set on keeping up the pace!
CREATOR SPOTLIGHT
What is the “Creator Spotlight”? It’s a way for us to give back and showcase our most creative community members who have taken the time to make some stellar Icarus content.
Let us introduce RoughGaming
A US-based content creator who has uploaded a whopping seven Icarus videos to his YouTube!
With the current public information, he has covered the different crafting tiers, resources and even the process of terraforming.

“Rough” as everyone calls him, is often seen in our Discord server greeting community members, being an active chatter and contributing positively to our social spaces.

Our favourite video of his so far is MONSTER OF ICARUS!

We reached out to Rough to find out more about why he chooses to create content around Icarus.

“Icarus initially caught my attention when it was first announced because of the co-op concept. The more I learned about Icarus the more I realized that it's a combination of everything that I have always looked for in a survival game. The more I've gotten involved with the amazing community and gotten to interact with the team at Rocketwerkz, the more my passion for the project has grown. This passion has driven me to really focus a lot of my time towards making content about Icarus so I can share that passion with others. I can't wait to learn more and dive deeper into the details surrounding Icarus and eventually take on the challenges that it presents myself.” - RoughGaming
OUR COMMUNITY IS GROWING!
Though Icarus’ release date is still on the horizon, we are blown away by our flourishing community across our major platforms.
DISCORD
We now have over 3K community members!

Our server is filled with passionate, kind and respectful survival enthusiasts who are keen to get their hands on Icarus, and they remind us of this every day ;). This is where you will find our Community Manager most active, and you’ll also find our development team joining in the conversation too. Not only do we chat about Icarus and our newly released content, but we drop secrets and discuss other video-game and non video-game topics. It’s really a community for all.
TWITCH
[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]
We’ve run four live broadcasts and plan to do many more. The most familiar faces you will see are Dean and Lorii, casually jamming Icarus together or conducting streams showcasing new features! You may even see one of your favourite content creators join us for a game in the future.
We see these as a prime opportunity to get truly “hands-on” with our viewers and talk about the current state of the game.
YOUTUBE
[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]
Our latest series “The Making of Icarus” follows our development team. You’ll come to know some of our development processes while also hearing how we’ve overcome some issues! These videos are aimed to provide insight into how we work as a team, and allow you to get to know us at the same time. Episode 4 is dropping this Friday 9am NZT (Thursday 2pm PT / 9pm GMT)

That's all for this update!
From all of us here at RocketWerkz, thanks for being an incredible community and stay safe!

What struggles did the Icarus development team face during New Zealand's first Covid-19 lockdown?

In this episode, Dean mentions how global restrictions kept many from attending international gaming events where budding relationships with potential partners and publishers form.

Martin Ponichtera our Senior Software Engineer details the new idea of "FLOD" Foliage Level Of Detail as a solution to some of Icarus architectural problems when players interacted with the environment around them.

This week we bring you another video in our “The Making of Icarus” series.

Olympus is our internal codename for the area Prospectors will explore when dropping onto Icarus for the very first time. While the environment is familiar, Senior Concept Artist George Lovesy explains the vision for Olympus and how it will evolve into something more dangerous and exotic.

Technical Lead Ben Carnell zones-in on the Industrial Simulator, and how this allowed our developers to create systems and gameplay that they could iterate upon fast.

Watch the Making of Icarus: Episode 1

For the past 18 months a videographer has been embedded in the studio filming early game development, design decisions and team meetings to provide a behind-the-scenes look at what goes into making a AAA PC survival video game.

RocketWerkz CEO Dean Hall is keen to embrace open development with the game’s community via the Making of Icarus videos, Discord and Steam communities. “One of the strengths of the DayZ mod was the community involvement in the process, giving feedback in real time and creating a product that was crafted by its players. I wanted to capture this again with Icarus. The ability to be upfront, transparent and raw with the community is what creates trust between us and them and builds a better game,” says Hall.

The first episode talks about the challenge of Icarus' simultaneously sci-fi yet primitive survival setting, rejected early concept art and shows the game's first internal milestone, Woodcutting Simulator, which focussed on getting the feel of core survival game mechanics right.

Future episodes cover world building, tech trees, playtesting, balancing a session-based gameloop and how the New Zealand-based studio handled covid-19 lockdowns.

The Making of Icarus will be published weekly at www.youtube.com/surviveicarus/ and players can join the discussion with our Community Manager and developers on Discord at Discord.gg/SurviveIcarus

DayZ creator's new PvE survival game Icarus shows off 30 minutes of co-op

DayZ creator Dean Hall has been off with his company RocketWerkz working on their new extraterrestrial crafting survival game Icarus. They've now popped up to give a closer look at what your first drop onto the alien planet might be like. Their first livestream sure makes Icarus look like a prettier version of survival games I've seen a lot of, but RocketWerkz seem pretty focused on ensuring Icarus stands out for its session-based setup that challenges you to escape the surface on a drop ship instead of sticking around forever.
