Chapter 5 Progress, What to expect in Kedemara II, and other thoughts...

Hello again, everyone!!

I hope this post finds all of you well and in good spirits! If the development of Chapter 4 has taught me anything, it is to NEVER take the day for granted. There is a great sense of accomplishment for pushing through adversity, but it's much more preferable to use ones' time wisely! I'm taking a break today so I can discuss a few topics on the horizon, and a few questions I've already received. After working on this game for several years, it's hard to believe I'm at the final chapter of this particular story. It has partially sunk in, but not fully by any means. I find myself abruptly recollecting this fact when discussing Chapter 5 with alpha testers and friends, it's a bittersweet occasion for sure.

So where are we with Chapter 5? How about the plans for Kedemara II? Anything else on the horizon? Let's tackle the topics in bulleted form to make things easier! I also want to clear the air on some FAQs I've encountered thus far.
Kedemara Chapter 5 progress and news
**Progress on Chapter 5**
As stated prior, I'm not taking the day for granted. I took a week off and started up again shortly thereafter. My first step is usually mapping, which I use as a "planning phase" too...it's far easier to build a mental map when you've got something to look at. A few of the regions/cities there were earmarked for Chapter 4 are getting moved to Chapter 5 (as intended). The new tilesets/settings in Chapter 4 were overall favorably received, there will be some new ones to enjoy in Chapter 5 as well! A few I've been saving for QUITE some time will finally come forward in Chapter 5!

I do have text outline, but ironically Chapter 5 is the one with the most pre-existing story material! I've had/known the ending since I started the game, it was just a matter of "getting there" with the rest of the story. There will be a few bridges to build, but we're almost there and it's quite exciting to see the goal in sight! I always try to bring something new to the table with each chapter, but the story will be very impactful (leading up to the story's apex) and I want that to be the primary focus. Everything thus far has built up to this chapter and I do not want to disappoint.

With that, I'll jump into a few FAQs regarding it (without giving any spoilers)...

"This is REALLY the final chapter? As in the story is wrapping up for SURE this time?"

Yes, that is the plan. You can always pad a story out further, but I do need to wrap it up sometime and we're basically there, from a narrative perspective. After writing for Deirdre and her friends for several years, it's very comfortable for me and I know the characters' voices well, however I do feel it's time to move on and introduce new friends who I'm sure you will grow to love as well!! :-)

"Will we see [character name] again in Chapter 5?"

You'll be seeing MANY folks again during Chapter 5. While the "giant reunion" plot device can be a little cheesy in execution, you'll be encountering a sizeable amount of past friends again during the chapter. You'll also be making a few new friends too, ones you MAY see again in Kedemara II.

"When can we expect Chapter 5 to release?"

I do not have a solid date at this time (nor an estimate to how long the chapter will be), but the winter season is usually what I aim for. I am getting a later start than I would like, because of the setbacks with Chapter 4. With some discipline, I believe winter of 2023 should be a reasonable goal at this time.

"What about historical figures like Prince Edgar and Lady Anora? Will we see anything else about them?"

There will be some more information about them and other historical figures in Chapter 5. While we've seen how they first made an impact on the world as we see it, we'll see how they look back on their actions and what they brought to fruition. This will greatly shape Deirdre's thought process as the Chapter goes onward. How will history remember Deirdre? Will they even remember her at all?

"Will this chapter be as emotional as Chapter 4's later half?"

Buckle up, Chapter 5 will definitely be a bumpy ride. I like JRR Tolkein's "Hope without guarantees" approach to story adversity, it will not be free of difficulty, but the light of hope will never go out so long as this story is being told. Emotions will definitely run high in this chapter and it will move to an apogee far higher than Chapter 4 did before we are given resolve.

Through all of this I would remind everyone, we still do not know who Deirdre is telling this story to right now. You can be assured that she lived to tell the tale as the story ends.

"Are you going to charge for Chapter 5 and/or Kedemara I as a whole now?"

Nope, Kedemara was free from the beginning and will be when completed as well. In its current state, I have no intentions of charging for the game.
Kedemara II information and FAQs
Funny enough, I've had more of Kedemara II planned out than Kedemara I when first starting on its development! The following entries in the Kedemara series will be based on D&D campaigns I wrote many years ago. It won't be quite as turnkey to convert them to an RPG storyline, but it'll be farther along than I was when starting Kedemara I. While Kedemara I focused much more on the past, Kedemara II is centered FAR more on the present and discovering the world as it is for the first time. A similar concept to Deirdre's story, but in practice this will feel...different.

So how about that FAQ on Kedemara II?

"What's the synopsis for Kedemara II?" (no spoilers)

Kedemara II will be set roughly 8-10 years after the end of Kedemara I. The events of Kedemara I will definitely leave a mark on the world, but there is still much to see and explore that we never saw in Deirdre's story. It's hard to give any story details without spoilers about Kedemara I's ending, but needless to say, things will be different.

There will be a much bigger focus on exploration, adventure, and a different approach to life in general for Kedemara II. The main characters will DEFINITELY reflect that, which is why I believe the story will have a much different feel than Kedemara I.

"Do you have a title for Kedemara II? When can we expect it to release?"

Yes, the intended title (as planned) will be "Kedemara II: Savage Tides". There will be a very big focus on naval exploration and stories centered around it. Not to sound like a broken record, but the cast of characters will be very well-suited to this type of story.

I am uncertain at this time, the preliminary setup for the game may take some time. I need to organize how I'll manage variables, overworld travel, plugins, etc. so that's a big unknown as I'll be taking a different approach this time. Could be a couple of years or a few months...not sure yet.

"...Anybody we know that'll be in the main cast?"

The main character IS somebody you'll (kind of) know! I won't post it outright, but this is a story about sailing, adventure, and fighting pirates...anybody you can think of who'd finally be old enough for that in roughly 8-10 years? I'd say he's certainly been preparing for such a task for several years! ;-)

"Will this be in RPG Maker too?"

Kedemara I was built in RPG Maker MV, which was replaced by RPG Maker MZ a couple of years later. I was too far into Kedemara I to start over again in MZ, so I went ahead and finished it out in MV. The difference between MV and MZ is pretty minimal, there are some UI editor changes and a few other features, but it's a very easy transition from a creation perspective.

I've entertained the idea of using Unity or Unreal Engine from now on, but I spend most of my time at work improving skills in SQL and Powershell, which are still rather new to me. Not to come off as rude, but focusing on that will help with my actual career, so spending less time on that to get familiar with a new game engine doesn't seem like the best use of my time right now. This segways into another related question...

"How much will Kedemara II cost?"

Kedemara II: Savage Tides is going to be free, as far as I currently intend. This is related to the "Why not use Unity or Unreal Engine" topic, but I am NO artist in any capacity, so the asset packs have been very helpful for me in creating Kedemara I. I intend to use them (and some new ones I'll acquire) for Kedemara II, since I've already purchased them and there's plenty of room for creativity and variation with them. Many of the asset packs won't allow you to use anything other than RPG Maker or (sometimes) Game Maker studio...legally. I don't have the spare time to engage in a legal battle with anyone, so I'm just going to follow them to the letter for now.

So far, I'll be working on Kedemara II: Savage Tides alone too, just like with Kedemara I. Other than some promotional art commissions, I don't intend to outsource much on this project either...I'd rather use the resources I have and can utilize in RPG Maker already. Telling the story in a presentable format is what I'm really after here, if it's only going to marginally improve the experience for people (if at all), there's no point in rocking the boat too much right now. This is, again, one of the reasons I'm able to offer this game for free. If collaboration becomes a viable option in the future, I will re-evaluate as needed.

"In what ways will this be different than Kedemara I?"

While Kedemara was released in "Chapters" akin to an expansion pack with each release, Kedemara II: Savage Tides will be more of an episodic nature. They'll be designated as campaigns, which will probably consist of an introductory questline (to open the campaign's story), 2 or 3 different mission sets you can do in whatever order you'd like, and then a conclusion quest to close out that particular campaign.

These will likely be 2-5 hours of story content per campaign, so it won't be as large as a Kedemara I chapter release, but there'll probably be more released during the year. It will also make the story more "flexible" and easy to follow. The will be SOME overarching story across the campaigns, but the idea will be to make release more digestible for newcomers, and easier to develop too.

"Ok...what kind of characters can we expect in Kedemara II?"

**Look away if you don't want to know ANYTHING about Kedemara II until it's released!!**

You'll have some wonderful shipmates to share your adventures with! Names and cast MAY get shifted up, but here's the crew thus far:

- Koda Grimshard: Daughter of Captain Brahma Grimshard, a former pirate from Broughton. After discovering he was a father, he changed his ways and raised Koda on the high seas as a Privateer. She may not be the tallest crewmate, but she knows her way around a cutlass and pistol. However, she fancies studying alchemy, navigation, and playing with her pet owl Orville too.

- Alice Greyhood: This quirky young rogue is out to make a name for herself! She enjoys subterfuge, stealth, sabotage, and other things that start with "S". Alice also likes hanging upside down while talking to people, as it's good for working out your core. She names all her daggers and remembers their birthdays too.

- Throgg: The jury's still out on how the whole "half-orc" thing happened in the first place, but that's how Throgg came to be! A giant, stoic fella with skin of green and a heart of gold. He doesn't crave adventure, but would like to make real friends he can spend his days with! True to his ancestry, Throgg isn't the brightest, but he means well and is a bang-up workout partner for Alice.

- Wynndi Briarheart: Someone's gotta heal this bunch of dimwits....right? This young Wood Elf woman studied druidic magic for decades and wants to expand her intellectual horizons through travel and exploration. Hoping to find iconic tomes and sacred monuments, Wynndi is only here because she needs cheap transportation...it's not like she wants to get to know everyone or anything, you know.

- Mina Hiiragi: Hailing from Wakeru City, this young Kassian woman has a deep love for munitions, firearms, explosives, and collecting butterflies. She has exceptional skill and deadly aim....so long as she doesn't lose her glasses.

I hope all that you've seen here makes the waiting worthwhile! I look forward to seeing what everyone thinks of our new friends when the time comes. Here's to many more adventures to come with new friends and new stories to tell!

Thank you all!

Chapter 4 is NOW LIVE!

Hello everyone!

It's been a great whirlwind of time and trials recently, but I'm happy to say we're here at this milestone of an event for Kedemara: The Orphan's Ballad! With so many amazing experiences that Deirdre's already walked through, what's in store for her in this chapter of her story? With great expectations, we tread onward through this chapter before the final stanza in the Orphan's Ballad.

Chapter 4 is now live!! I will be keeping an eye on comments should we run into any issues. I will stay posted on anything that needs fixing.

Thank you all, and I hope you enjoy what's to come!!

2022 Wrap-up Progress Update!
Hello Everyone!!
Happy Holidays, Season's Greetings, or whatever your preferred salutation is! My, oh my, the past month has been QUITE the whirlwind. As stated in the last update, my recent job change has made for a big shift in available time to work on Kedemara Ch. 4. I'd be lying if I said the past year hasn't been my most challenging yet. While weekdays are near a total loss, I still have weekends and some chunks of time off during the year. It is VERY hard to estimate progress with the way my new schedule is, but I'm very happy with where the game is sitting now in terms of development. Enough about that though, let's get onto the happy stuff!!!

Chapter 4 Progress

To put it lightly, I haven't been getting out much these past few weeks. As always, the game is a labor, but a labor of love. Though I am pleased to announce that the "hard part" is finally over! To put what that means into words...all of the planning, major scripting, and story scenes are completed for Chapter 4. I'd call this version a late Alpha or early Beta build. It is a massive relief to be at this part of development right now, but there is still a fair bit of work to do. Here's what I still need to iron out before it can be released...

- Creation of overworld enemies, setting random encounter areas, and fine-tuning Boss difficulty
- Balancing EXP yield, creating new character abilities, and balancing item stats/bonuses
- Additional "flavor" encounters and interactions with NPCs
- Finalizing dialogue and text formatting (ensuring all lore is congruent and conversations are efficient)
- Creating new items, equipment, and Achievements.
- Fine-tuning map content and timings for cutscenes
- Main-story bug testing and then 100% content bug testing (that's the tough part...)

While this sounds like a lot, most of this is very minimal impact at this point. Playtesting will thankfully not be a solo effort this time around, as I've already had a playtest with one of my Alpha testers this week. While it won't take a year, without whole days to dedicate to working on the game it may not go as quickly as I'd like (especially the playtesting). I still believe the Q1 2023 figure will be a doable goal at this point.

What to expect in Chapter 4
-Story Flow-
To be perfectly honest, I was uncertain where to end Chapter 4 a week ago. This boiled down to how the rhythm of the story "felt", and how much time I could dedicate to ensuring a quality release. The original ending point needed FAR too big of a cliffhanger, the Chapter would have been another 2-3 hours long (which would mean another 3 or 4 months to complete), and I would have squandered some VERY key opportunities for the cities/areas in question. The areas that will be explored later had excellent opportunities for character development and bringing key lore to life...I REALLY didn't want to lose that just to pad out Chapter 4.

While previous Chapters did have a "Back and Forth" flow to the story, Chapter 4 starts very mellow and the intensity begins to ramp up exponentially as you progress. The original ending point would have dropped down much too far from where it currently ends, killing the momentum it builds across the entire Chapter. After hearing what my Alpha Tester had to say, they believe the current ending is the proper one for this chapter too.
-Dialogue Style-
Like I said in the last update, we're already at nearly 30 hours of content in Chapters 1-3 alone, so there was no need to stretch Chapter 4 out longer than it needed to be. As of the last test (without random encounters and Boss battles), we're sitting at 7-8 hours of content for Chapter 4. I've made dialogue more succinct and easier to read now, and will do revisions on previous chapters as I work on Chapter 5. Some of the Streamers liked to read the content aloud, others preferred to just read key scenes aloud...I also have Streamers who translate it to their native language as they stream, so I want to be considerate of everyone I can who's playing.

There will be further refinement as I polish up Chapter 4, but so far my Alpha Tester liked the change and felt it was an improvement. Important cutscenes will have slightly more text density, but this will be highly relevant and based on what "voice" we need to impart for the speaker. One side effect of this (according to my Tester) was that you "Really need to pay attention to the dialogue, or you will miss something important." Since most folks are "in it for the story", I'm not sure how much this impacts you, but they felt it was worth mentioning to everyone.
-Combat Mechanics-
Admittedly, combat is an afterthought for me in development, but I DO want to make it as fun as possible. Nobody likes tons of random encounters, or repetitive combat that becomes draining to endure. I have a great surprise that you'll encounter roughly halfway through Chapter 4, that brings a very big shift in combat mechanics and strategy. I don't want to spoil anything, so I'll leave it at that....but it's very exciting and is congruent with the story too, I think everyone will find it quite fun!
- Tone of the Story-
There will be a definitive shift in tone as the Chapter progresses onward, but there will still be plenty of laughs and smiles to be had during this chapter. As Deirdre ages and is more cognizant of the world around her, we begin to learn the nature of her world right alongside her. Life is complicated and often there are no easy answers. Don't lose heart though, because she certainly won't! We can't always control our circumstances, but we CAN control how we move onward through them!

There were lots of new questions posed and much to ponder at the end of Chapter 3. While you may not get answers right away, by the time Chapter 4 is over, MANY things will come into focus and its relevance to their world will become quite clear. One could say the end result of Chapter 4 is "We know the task before us...now how will we proceed?"

Chapter 4 Trailer and Teasers

Being so focused on completing Chapter 4, I don't have much time to allocate to promotional media for this release (or the game in general). I will attempt to piece a short teaser trailer for Chapter 4 soon, but want to make sure my focus is on completing the Chapter first and foremost. I think it will be rather exciting, and I will eventually get a better trailer together for the entire game (but that may not be until Chapter 5 releases).

I may post some screenshots in the near future as well, as that takes minimal time and serves to build excitement too. Really looking forward to everyone's thoughts on this Chapter!!

Chapter 4 Release Estimate

Like I said prior, we're still on track for Q1 2023, but it's hard to gauge what could pop up (and inevitably does). To give an example, we had a few hiccups where the game froze at the battle victory screen. This was only occurring on AMD 6000-series GPUs, so I need to do further testing to see if this is going to be an issue with the future update. *sigh*

If I had to give a month estimate, I'd say February at the earliest and March at the latest.

I want to thank everyone for their patience and for playing the game in the first place! I believe Chapter 4 sets the final Chapter of this story in an excellent position, and can already see the ending of this particular story in sight. It is difficult to imagine the scale of a game when you first start out, but I think I've learned a great deal from this whole process....especially since it's my first game to develop. I look forward to the relationships we've built with the characters continuing to blossom, as we all hear Deirdre's story together.

This won't be "the end" though! We'll be seeing many of our old friends in Kedemara II as well!! I'll try and get through Chapter 5 before we start talking about THAT game though ;-)

Thank you all!!

Chapter 4 News and Updates

Hello again, everyone!!

It's almost become a meme at this point, but wow has it been a while since I posted on here!! I'd first like to thank everyone who has played the game and got us to the numbers we are at now. I saw a big surge in players this year, which I'm assuming has to do with Steam Deck compatibility for the game. Always encouraging to see new players and people who are getting to experience Kedemara for the first time....but onto the news!!!
Since April I've....
My last update in April did cite some big setbacks and events happening in my personal life, but wowza did things ramp up from there!

To summarize, some commitments to family members I made before April have still been in progress. Pair that with moving to a new job (after being at my previous one 9+ years), moving residences under VERY "inconvenient" circumstances (like no A/C in 100+ degree weather), and all the typical life demands makes for....a lot of development time eaten up by other things. Considering the rise in living expenses across the board, changing jobs was definitely the right move...albeit at the cost of available time for game development taking a large hit.

My new job is VERY demanding on the day-to-day side of things, making weeknights very difficult to work on the game. I allocate as much time as possible on weekends to make progress, but game development and life are both a solo gig for me...I'm usually handling all that life demands on my own.
Chapter 4 Release Date
My time off is now in sporadic chunks, so it's hard to pin down a solid release date for Chapter 4 at this time. I can say with some margin for error, that Chapter 4 is going to be released around Q1 of 2023. I have stewed on MANY alternatives to this situation, such as wrapping things up into one slightly larger chapter (combining 4 and 5 together) and releasing later into next year. I'd also considered truncating some of the content for the release and padding it out later on down the line with content updates.

It's hard to fully explain without giving too much away, but there is so much already-existing content that Kedemara I is the foundation for, it's almost impossible to skip it. Even though Kedemara III (Yes...Kedemara THREE) is ~180 years into the future, events in Chapters 4 and 5 of Kedemara have to be fleshed-out properly for all of this to make sense.
What/When to Expect...
I sound like a broken record, but I'd rather miss a deadline than put something I hate out. I will be taking a very hard look at making the content succinct (with less filler) and heavily involving my alpha testers earlier in the process of development. I've gotten big thumbs up on the first hour of content for Chapter 4, but I want to make sure things feel consistent throughout and not rushed. Still, being cognizant that we're at 25+ hours of game already, I don't want things to come off as arduous and drawn-out in the grand scheme of things.

Chapter 4 has some VERY impactful moments that I do not want to cast off, but I may need to simply rearrange them. It's always hard to gauge until someone else does a playthrough, but Chapter 4 may end up shorter than Chapter 3 when all is said and done. The goal will be a solid release by Q1 2023, with sooner than that being a magnificently ideal scenario. I will have much more time off during the winter season of 2022, so I'm looking to make as big an impact as I can around then.

As with anything worth doing in life, it's worth doing right. While a labor of love, the development of Kedemara is still a labor and I am subject to the time I have available to me. Knowing how this particular story concludes, it is well worth the time to get us there. I look forward to sharing this next chapter in Deirdre's story with all of you...and stories to come in the years to follow :)
