Apex Legends dev thinks battle royale would benefit from test servers

Apex Legends is one of several popular live service games that doesn't currently utilise a public test server system for upcoming updates - but, should it? It's a system that has proven a useful tool for developers working on games like Overwatch and Rainbow Six Siege, so fans want to know whether it's something Respawn Entertainment are looking at. Well, while they don't speak for the whole development team, one Apex Legends developer has shown support for the introduction of the system on Reddit.

In the replies to a Reddit thread on Apex Legends developers presence in said Sub-Reddit, an unnamed Technical Game Designer at Respawn Entertainment that uses the username 'RobotHavGunz' has shared their personal belief that Apex Legends would benefit from a system that employs public testing servers.

When asked whether the development team at Respawn Entertainment was simply not big enough to cope with the demand Apex Legends requires, RobotHavGunz revealed that "yes, there are some problems that can be solved by simply throwing more people at the problem - but it's often less than you'd think."

Apex Legends' Newcastle popularity sees Lifeline pick rate tumble

Apex Legends players have had a week to get used to the Season 13 update and the introduction of Newcastle, the Apex Games' newest face, to the roster of playable characters. Prior to his release, fans were concerned that his ability kit would overlap with Lifeline's and ultimately drown her out - and it looks like those concerns were somewhat justified. It's only been a week, but Newcastle is already being picked over twice as much as Lifeline in-game.

Looking at Apex Legends Status, we can see that at the time of writing Newcastle is being picked roughly 8% of the time. Meanwhile Lifeline is sitting at 3.9%. This equates to roughly a 5% change in popularity for Lifeline - a major drop. These numbers might seem small, but when you consider Apex Legends' huge player count, it's actually quite a large number of players.

Of course, this could just be a temporary swing in popularity that reflects the fact that Newcastle is the newest legend in the game. However, the concerns expressed by players aren't unfounded and Lifeline mains have been calling for change for some time now.

World's Edge is back in Apex Legends, which means we're dropping Fragment

World’s Edge is back in Apex Legends, and any long term player will know what that means. We’re dropping back into Fragment! This point of interest is a beloved hotspot for early game drops, meaning a large chunk of the match population will be dropping there as their very first stop.

But why is that? Well, for one, it’s massive. Even with a large number of squads dropping there, you’ll likely be able to find a decent amount of loot for you and your buddies to pick up and use against other squads. Secondly, due to its position being somewhat close to the centre of the map, it’s a great spot to rotate out from when the first or second circle starts drifting away.

When the circle remains over Fragment, you can be certain that fresh squads will continue funnelling in from all directions, so it’s also one of the best places to hold up if you’ve got a taste for action. It’s a good thing people who like hot dropping - intentionally starting in heavily contested locations - are typically starving for high-intensity games.
