Olympus' Season 12 map changes "most ambitious" in Apex Legends history

Olympus is set for a major facelift for Apex Legends Season 12, and during a recent media event, Alex Graner - a level designer at Respawn Entertainment - lifted the lid on the upcoming changes being made to Olympus, describing it as potentially "the most ambitious" map update in Apex history.

This huge map update is going to change the way players experience this floating utopia, and Graner hopes to see a real "shake up" to the meta on the map. With two new POIs, Phase Driver and Terminal, and an expanded playable area on the south side of the map, Olympus is going to be bigger and better than ever before.

Terminal is being introduced to offer a new route into Hammond Labs from Bonsai Plaza and several minor changes have been made throughout the map to help with rotation into - and more importantly out of - choke points. Phase Driver, on the other hand, is going to offer players a new way to get their hands on high-tier loot in the early game.

Apex Legends Season 12 nerfs Caustic traps and improves Crypto's drones

The build up to any new Apex Legends season can be a nervy time for players. Will my main get nerfed into oblivion? Will my favourite legend finally become viable to play? Well, for two of the battle royale's most frustrating legends, their time under the microscope is now.

During a media event, balance designer John Larson reveals that the two legends getting tweaked for Apex Legends Season 12 are Caustic and Crypto. Caustic is receiving a nerf that will make his Nox Gas Traps a bit less formidable, while Crypto mains will receive a new way to use his surveillance drones.

So, let's take a look at Caustic first. In previous seasons, the legend's notoriously annoying gas traps could only be destroyed before they detonated. However, players can now destroy them after they've been triggered, which means no matter how sneakily you conceal your gas trap, it can still be removed and the onslaught of gas can be halted.

Here's everything we know about Control in Apex Legends: Defiance

Every now and again, the good folk at Respawn give us a fancy new game mode to muck around with when the trials and tribulations of battle royale get a tad too stressful. Control is the latest example of this, and will be dropping alongside Apex Legends; Defiance February 8. For those who want to hit the ground running, we’ve compiled everything we know about Control to help you get to grips with this new experience.

This article will break down what Control is, how things like looting and abilities work in Control, and the future of other modes that differ greatly from the standard battle royale. This information comes from a developer Q&A where game designer David Sweiczko filled us in on many of the details.

Here are the basics. Control is a 9v9 mode, where teams fight to control three locations on the map. As time progresses these locations controlled by teams provide points. Once a team possesses a certain number of points they win - you’re typical King of the Hill game mode many FPS players will be familiar with.

Here are all the changes to Olympus coming with Apex Legends: Defiance

If there’s one massive aspect of the new Apex Legends season that stands out - aside from the introduction of Mad Maggie of course - it’s the overhaul of Olympus. This map, a floating research base, has its fair share of problems in its current non-damaged iteration. For those looking to dominate in this fresh new season, a full rundown on Olympus changes is invaluable.

During a Q/A, we got plenty of new information on the changes coming to Olympus straight from level designer Alex Graner and world director Eduardo Agostini who both talked at length at what was described as probably the most ambitious map update to date.

First and foremost, there are some new points of interest coming to the reworked version of Olympus. The first is the Phase Driver, positioned in the formerly-empty spot between Bonsai and Hydroponics. This mechanical marvel is what caused the current disaster that’s left much of Olympus unoperational and hovering over Malta.

Here are six things you didn't know about Apex Legends' Control mode

Nine-versus-nine, unlimited respawn, objective-based Apex Legends? Sounds a hoot. The new Control limited-time mode that is coming on February 8 with the Apex Season 12 Defiance update has really intrigued players, and while a blog post outlined most of the details about it, there were still some questions left unanswered.

However, at a media event, the masterminds behind Control went in even deeper on this chaotic LTM to reveal even more interesting details. We won't bore you with all the stuff you've probably read in the blog post already, but here are all the new bits of info we got from game directors David Swieczko and Mark Yampolsky.

As this is a casual "playground" mode, the devs have taken an equally laid back approach to things like ammo and healing. In Control, your loadout weapons will have unlimited ammo, so you can keep blasting away to your heart's content. The only exception to the rule are the powerful crate weapons that can be obtained through Airdrop events that happen throughout the match.
