Apex Legends PS5 and Xbox Series X|S update news coming "very, very soon"

Apex Legends is one of the most popular free-to-play shooters available right now, and players on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S have been desperate for a native next-gen version. We know that there is one on the way this year after Apex Legends PS5 version was spotted on the PSN database, but other than that, little is known about Apex Legends' next-gen update. However, we might not have much longer to wait.

During a media event, Apex Legends' game director Steven Ferreira says that news on an Apex Legends next-gen update for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S is coming "very, very soon", and hinted at some interesting details about how they plan to release next-gen features.

Discussing this further, Ferreira reveals that fans can look forward to Apex Legends "moving to a new native version [for] next-gen" that will come with a host of new features.

Apex Legends' Maggie stole abilities designed for another legend

Initially appearing as a foil to Fuse, Maggie has muscled her way into Apex Legends as the 20th legend to appear on the roster. During a media event, game engineer Chris Winder reveals that elements of Maggie's kit were originally made for a legend that would resemble a "Polish winged hussar" - horse-mounted soldiers defined by large plumages of feathers on their armour - called Husaria.

Describing her as a "one-woman SWAT team", Husaria was originally designed to be a "breacher" - someone who can take defensive legends to task and push fortified squads. It's clear that Maggie's kit is preserving the essence of this character, but Wilder reveals that there were quite a few iterations of this "breacher" before Maggie's kit was settled on.

Respawn was aware that creating a balanced character was important - Apex Legends has a lot of "open ground" in-between its buildings - and this led to the design team testing a number of abilities. Winder reveals a "riot shield, a flashbang, and even at one point, a shotgun attached to her leg" were considered.

Apex Legends Control teams can have up to three of the same legend

Respawn Entertainment is living up to its name when it comes to Apex Legends' next limited-time mode; the 9v9, unlimited respawn Control mode. We learned a load of new details about it earlier this week thanks to a media event - including that Lifeline's ultimate has been tweaked for the mode and that players will have infinite ammo - but we were still left a tad perplexed when it comes to team composition.

In Control, the nine-legend squads are essentially made up of three traditional Apex trios - and yes, that means you can't nine-stack. In the mode, players can freely swap which legend they play as after death while waiting to be respawned, so you aren't tied down to just one character per match. In trailer footage for Control, we saw a few instances where two of the same legend were competing on the same team, confirming you do not need nine unique legends on a team. However, Respawn hasn't explicitly stated just how many of the same legend each team can have.

Could we in theory see nine Pathfinders versus nine Caustics? Is two the maximum, as we saw in trailers? Or, as many have assumed so far, might we be able to have three of the same legend, with each trio being allowed to have one each?

Apex Legends ranked Season 12 will not feature World's Edge

Apex Legends Season 12 Defiance is fast approaching, and earlier this week we learned via a media event that World's Edge would not feature in the public map rotation for the entire season. Now, Respawn has confirmed it isn't featuring in ranked rotation either, despite being a favourite among competitive players.

For those climbing the Apex Legends ranks in Season 12, you'll be playing the reworked Olympus in Split 1 and Kings Canyon in Split 2 - the latter of which has had questions raised about its viability as a competitive map.

Despite World's Edge arguably being one of the most complete and enjoyable maps in Apex's lineup, to see it not feature at all for an entire season is a surprise. Well, if you really miss World's Edge that much, you could always tune into the Apex Legends Global Series where it is the sole map for the battle royale's fiercest competitors.
