ALGS Championship weekend two: wins for Paradox, Crazy Raccoon, and Loba

Week two of the ALGS Championship has come to an end, and the APAC North, APAC South, and South American finalists have been decided. These teams will advance to the ALGS Championship Finals next weekend, and have a chance to win a significant slice of the prize pool, which currently sits at over $2 million but is growing every day.

Despite her recent nerf which specifically aimed to stop her from taking "coffee breaks" in the ALGS Championship, Valkyrie saw a lot more play as teams started to experiment more with the new legend. Most noticeably, APAC North title contender T1 added Valk to their squad to aid their long rotation from the northwest of the map, something that was noticeably absent from its team composition last week.

If you missed any of the Valkyrie action, want to keep an eye on teams from outside your region, or just couldn't keep up with 24 hours of Apex Legends esports over the weekend, we're here to recap of all the major talking points.

ALGS Championship opens with plenty of surprises and very little Valkyrie

The first weekend of the ALGS Championship saw South America, APAC North, and APAC South in action with the first two matches of the group stages. With plenty of big-name teams in action, and the prize pool rising every minute to a potential $3 million, fans and players alike were excited for the tournament to finally begin.

With some of the most successful teams in the world taking to the field, the eyes of Apex Legends esports fans were drawn to the weekend's action broadcast live on Twitch and YouTube - although not on the official PlayApex channel, which remains strangely dedicated to NA and EMEA play only. Players from those regions also tuned into the APAC and SA matches, however, in order to see how competitive the tournament looked, and how their rivals were utilising new legends or strategies.

The initial matches showed us what's in store for the month-long celebration of Apex Legends esports, including the teams to watch, highlighting a few unexpected frontrunners, and giving us a glance at the emerging Championship meta.

Complexity's iShiny will finally meet his Apex Legends teammates for the ALGS Championship

We've all seen, heard, and experienced the effects of the coronavirus pandemic over the past 18 months, and the esports industry has had to adapt more than most. The Apex Legends Global Series kicked off in January 2020, with grand plans of hosting its first Major at the Esports Stadium in Arlington, Texas in March and two Premier Events in Paris and Bucharest in April and May.

Unfortunately, the live events never came to fruition, and the ALGS has never hosted a LAN tournament. Other than a handful of show matches and the legendary Preseason Invitational in Kraków, Poland back in September 2019, Apex Legends as an esport has barely seen in-person events.

Many players long for LANs, and the creators of the ALGS understandably want live events back too, when it's safe to do so. But the pandemic has also had a profound impact on the teams themselves, with many unable to compete in-person, and most playing in the biggest esports tournaments from the less than ideal comfort of their own bedrooms.

Finding an org: Nessy's rocky road to the ALGS Championship

Nessy is one of the best Apex Legends teams in the world, there's no doubt about it. And up until last week, it was the best orgless team in the world by a long margin. The team announced that it had signed a contract with a major esports organisation on Twitter, and over the past days it has been teasing fans with gifs and memes.

The Apex Legends Global Series Championship - the biggest event in Apex Legends esports to date - is on the horizon, and the prize pool could potentially skyrocket to a cool $3 million. The best teams in the world will fight it out to be crowned the best in their region, and Nessy's Martin 'Graceful' Wongprom, Jake 'jmw' Walters, and Rasmus 'maydeelol' Zettergren are the second seed in EMEA, a super-region combining European, Middle Eastern, and African teams.

Nessy achieved this consistency without the backing of an organisation, without a salary to fall back on, and enters the ALGS Championship group stages as the team with the second-most points in the region. Along with the likes of Gambit and Alliance, Nessy is one of the favourites to take home the crown.

Apex Legends' Valkyrie will be nerfed to avoid ALGS Championship "coffee breaks"

An Apex Legends developer has revealed that Valkyrie's 'tactical hover' ability will be nerfed on Thursday, May 26, as Respawn developers are concerned with how it could be used in the ALGS Championship.

The ability isn't listed as one of the new character's official abilities, but it concerns how her passive and tactical interact. When the newest entrant to the Apex Games uses her passive VTOL jets - that's her jet pack - it consumes fuel at a rapid rate to ensure she can't stay in the air for too long. However, that changes while Valkyrie is aiming her Missile Swarms.

When aiming her tactical while in the air, Valkyrie consumes 10% of the usual fuel, allowing her to send an accurate cluster of paralysing missiles towards opposing teams. However, players have been abusing this 'tactical hover' interaction, especially during the final circles of competitive matches. As a result, Respawn is removing this feature as the developers are worried that it could impact the quality of the ALGS Championship.
