Apex Legends Season 8 will introduce gold magazines that automatically reload

Respawn is bringing gold magazines to Apex Legends next season, according to the description of today's gameplay trailer. The description has since been edited, but not before some eagle-eyed internet hounds took a screenshot of the text.

The trailer will likely show off new character Fuse's tactical and ultimate abilities - after which we'll hazard a guess at where he places on our Apex Legends tier list. We'll update that again once we've had a chance to play around with Fuse ourselves and see how he stacks up against the likes of Bloodhound and Horizon.

The description also explains exactly how the gold magazine will function, as most gold items build on the bonuses that the lower-level items give you while also offering an extra boost. We now have confirmation that the gold magazine is "capable of automatically reloading holstered weapons". This sounds like a game-changing benefit if you can get your hands on one, but Respawn's lead game designer Daniel Klein has some words of reassurance for those who think it will be overpowered.

Fresh Apex Legends leaks indicate February 2 Nintendo Switch release date

With Apex Legends' Season 8 set to kick off soon, the battle royale game is currently enjoying some solid growth on Steam, sporting over 100,000 concurrent players on the platform. With crossplay now a standard feature, the growing number of PC players are able to jump into the fray together with their console-based friends. That is, with the exception of those patiently awaiting the game's Nintendo Switch release. However, a fresh round of leaks all point towards a February 2 launch - in-line with the advent of Season 8.

Back at the end of December, Reddit user 'WaterGotHim' shared a supposed message from a member of EA's marketing division claiming that a February 1 release date was being targeted. Parts of the message, possibly pertaining to pricing or items bundled with the release, were blurred out. This at least indicates that there may be more details to be revealed, either officially or otherwise, in the lead up to the Switch launch.

Additionally, in the past week, two new posts have surfaced on the ApexUncovered subreddit, seemingly confirming that a February 2 launch is on the cards from Amazon's Japanese and Mexican sites.

Apex Legends hits its highest concurrent player count on Steam

As Respawn prepares to launch Apex Legends Season 8: Mayhem, the battle royale game has never been more popular - at least not on Steam. Fans celebrated prematurely ahead of the game's second anniversary, and Apex Legends reached its highest ever number of concurrent players on the platform.

Season 8 is set to make huge changes to King's Canyon, as well as adding new legend Fuse - whose entrance triggered the explosives that will irreversibly alter the original map that we know and love.

Also new for Season 8 is the 30-30 Repeater lever-action rifle. Season 8 goes live on February 2 and, if the Steam numbers are anything to go by, we could see more players than ever take to the field. Players will undoubtedly log on to check out the new character, weapon, and of course start the battle pass - or at least have a look to see if the skins tickle their collective fancy.

Apex Legends Season 8 is totally demolishing Kings Canyon

When Respawn said last week that the Apex Legends’ map Kings Canyon would be “obliterated” in Season 8, I thought perhaps this meant they were going to whack a giant crater somewhere and call it a day. After seeing the new Season 8 launch trailer, I think I wildly underestimated their resolve. Kings Canyon looks like a wasteland.
