Apex Legends' "improved ring logic" patch needs work after ALGS issues

Apex Legends, like any battle royale game, sees players fight each other for victory in the perpetually contracting circle. Whether it's gas, hellfire, or 'unspecified zone', the ring dictates where the final stages of matches take place, forcing teams to rotate through unfavourable choke points or rewarding those with vantage points in the endgame.

The Apex Legends ring, in particular, has its quirks and teams can often make predictions about its final position based on early information. However, as one of the few battle royales with large impassable mountains in the centre of the map and huge areas of steep cliffs and unswimmable ocean at the edges, some players have noticed the final circle can be very unkind. It is not unheard of for the circle to leave teams stranded between a cliff face and the deadly gas, or entirely finish over the ocean. Complaints about these situations affecting Apex Legends ranked matches regularly hit the official subreddit or go viral on Twitter.

However, this was rarely seen in competitive esports tournaments until last week. The final matches of the Apex Legends Global Series (ALGS) wrapped up with victories for BlackBird Ventus, LYNX TH, Counter Logic Gaming, and GnaskeStrafeDel. However, in the latter stages of GSD's winning match, the final circle sat comfortably astride an impassable mountain.

Apex Legends' latest patch reverts the armour nerf

Just over two weeks ago, EA launched the Apex Legends Season 6 patch which changed, amongst other things, the entire armour meta. Now, some of those changes are being rolled back.

There were two key changes with Season 6. All armour became Evo Armour, and all armour values were reduced by 25 HP. The switch to Evo Armour is here to stay, but the values will be reverting back to their pre-Season 6 values. Jason McCord, the design director for the game, explains that "after letting the change simmer for a few weeks," the fan feedback and in-game data suggests reverting the values is the way to go.

These changes will take effect today, and McCord says that while the armour switch was successful in EA's "months long" internal playtesting, it did not have the same effect when released into Apex Legends across the board. For the sake of balance, armour values will be going back to what they were.

Apex Legends' team use Revenant and Wraith to beat under the map cheaters

A map glitch which allows players to disappear under the map has been causing havoc in Apex Legends, but one set of streamers have managed to find a way around it. One of these streamers captured the footage and uploaded it to Reddit from the account u/itsjustblob, complaining that he has been "forced to run Revenant at this point" in order to counteract the glitch.

Several comments on the original post confirmed that this had been an ongoing issue in Apex Legends ranked matches for a while, and in some cases players had even played an entire round under the map after both squads exploited the glitch at the same time.

The match in question took place on Xbox, but this does not appear to be a platform specific glitch, and is instead a problem across the board. Apex fans will be hoping it's fixed soon, otherwise the complex tactics of u/justblobs' crew will be the only way to play.

Apex Legends could be getting crossplay later this month

EA confirmed a while ago that crossplay would be coming to Apex Legends, with the date then set as just 'Fall 2020'. Now, as we enter the Fall release schedule, a combination of dataminers and leakers have suggested it could be coming sooner rather than later.

First, let's take a look at the dataminers, since the evidence there is more tangible. In the Season 6 update, there are numerous references to 'crossplay' the code, including references to crossplay chat in the Member Variables (aspects of the code which affect players) and accessing crossplay in the Convar section of the code, which refers to the developer console commands.

These, plus numerous other crossplay and EA Digital Platform references in the code, suggests crossplay is all but ready to go and will be arriving very soon. As for exactly how soon, that's when we turn to the leakers, and things suddenly get considerably more speculative.
