Apex Legends devs considered dynamic weather effects for battle royale

If you were one of the lucky ones who managed to get their hands on an Apex Legends Golden Ticket ahead of the Apex Legends Season 15 start date, you may have checked out Respawn Entertainment's Broken Moon teaser. You know, the one that Apex Legends' Revenant could break out of bounds on. Well, if you did check it out - or if you've seen someone else checking it out online - you might be wondering what all the fog was about. That, and whether players could expect to see that much mist when they jumped into their first game on the new map. Well, we wondered that too - and we got to ask about it.

Discussing Apex Legends' new map with lead level designer Jeff Shaw, we were fortunate enough to ask about this foggy map teaser and whether Respawn Entertainment has considered introducing dynamic weather effects beyond this to its battle royale.

When asked about the thick fog present in the Broken Moon map teaser, Shaw explained that this was something of an "artistic liberty" - a decision to add some dramatic flair to the slow reveal the team wanted. Players who were worried about sightlines will be pleased to know that he also made it clear that "the fog isn't that thick in the actual map".

Apex Legends devs unsure if Ranked players will like Broken Moon

We know it might go somewhat without saying, but Apex Legends' Eclipse update is going to be a season worth remembering when it comes to this battle royale shooter. Not only is another legend named Catalyst joining the Apex Games, a terraformer coming for Gibraltar's crown and the first binary trans legend on the roster, we're also getting a new lunar-located map: Broken Moon. Ahead of the hotly anticipated Apex Legends Season 15 start date, we were fortunate enough to talk to design director Evan Nikolich about how Respawn Entertainment thinks Ranked players will respond to the new map - and, he wasn't quite sure.

When asked whether he thinks Broken Moon will be something of a hit with players attempting to clamber up the Apex Legends ranks, Nikolich answered honestly and expressed that this sort of thing is just "really hard to tell".

Now, that might sound like a bit of a cop-out answer, but Nikolich continues by explaining why this is the case - and why it's probably going to be the case for Apex Legends' next new map. You know, if there is a next one, of course. (We didn't get to ask about that.)

Apex Legends crossprogression details

Apex Legends crossprogression details

We know Apex Legends might be one of the best battle royale games out there right now, but it's still missing one key feature a lot of the other popular multi-platform battle royale games have: crossprogression. That's right, we're still waiting on Apex Legends crossprogression - and the game's on its 15th season. So, we're going to dive in and let you know the latest on this highly anticipated feature and what the developers have said.

If you're wondering what crossprogression is, and why you should care, allow us to explain. This is a feature that allows players to earn progress towards a single account, no matter the platform. So, you could be playing and levelling up on PC, and then find that anything you unlocked there would be available when you jumped onto your Xbox Series X - or your PS5 - the next day. This is something that exists in titles like Fortnite and Warzone, for example, but not Apex Legends - just yet, anyway.

Apex Legends' Broken Moon is built with LTMs like Control in mind

Apex Legends' Season 15 start date is almost upon us and there's a lot to look forward to when it comes to this battle royale's Eclipse update. We know the fact that Apex Legends' Catalyst might have abilities like Valorant's Viper is exciting, but we really need to talk about how amazing Broken Moon looks - this shooter's new map. As something of an amalgamation of all the lessons Respawn Entertainment has learnt, when it comes to map design, throughout this battle royale's lifetime, this is sure to be a fantastic environment to fight in. Interestingly, though, the developers aren't just looking at Apex Legends' battle royale for information when it comes to designing a new map and its POIs - they use the LTMs to influence decisions too.

Discussing the development of Season 15's Broken Moon with Apex Legends' lead level designer Jeff Shaw, we found out that Respawn Entertainment is starting to think about POIs "in the inverse", thanks to the popularity of LTMs - like Control.

Now, that's all well and good, but what does this actually mean? Well, it means that Respawn Entertainment are actively considering LTMs when they're designing new maps and POIs - asking questions like "if we were to put Control on this map, hypothetically, where could we put it?"
