Apex Legends' Catalyst is a terraformer coming for Gibraltar's crown

Hold up, battle royale fans. Apex Legends' next playable character has been revealed and her name is Catalyst. We know Respawn Entertainment has created one of the best battle royale games out there, but it feels as though it is continually raising the bar with each new addition to the roster. Catalyst is Apex Legends' first trans character and she's coming for Gibraltar's crown as king of the defensive legends. No disrespect to Newcastle, of course.

Described as an "experienced terraformer and defensive conjurer" by Respawn Entertainment here, Catalyst was a hero long before she found herself with the ability to "manipulate the battlefield" with ferrofluid. However, an explosive accident caused by her over-zealous anti-Hammond Robotics activist friend has left her with a strange new power that we can't wait to see in action.

In the latest Stories from the Outlands short, titled Last Hope, we see Catalyst trying to find out what happened to the aforementioned friend in a conversation with Rampart. While it is a wonderfully emotive way to introduce the character to Apex Legends' rich universe, we still don't know what exactly she's capable of in-game.

Apex Legends newest character is the witchy Catalyst

Respawn has revealed its newest character coming to Apex Legends, Catalyst, in a new animated short showing off her backstory.

Catalyst, also known as Tressa Smith, is an "experienced terraformer and defensive conjurer," who "uses her remarkable control of ferrofluid to manipulate the battlefield," as described on the game's official site. In the short, called Last Hope, it shows her and a friend trying to save one of Boreas' moons, Cleo, but they disagree with the methodology in doing so.

She seems to have a very witchy vibe, though with a sci-fi twist, some majorly strong vibes overall. Catalyst is also seen chatting with Rampart as the two talk over some crystals that the former is reading, really amping up the witchy feeling, as she explains her backstory.

This Week in Apex Legends news: Horizon, Gun Run, and Golden Tickets

Hey, Apex Legends fans - it's been a pretty exciting week for this battle royale shooter, hasn't it? We know it's one of the best battle royale games out there anyway right now, but everything is a little better when it's spooky season and the Fight or Fright event is in full swing now. We know you're itching to jump back into the fray and work on your Apex Legends rank - so, we'll keep this brief. Here's a quick run-through on some of the most interesting bits of Apex Legends news to come out of this past week.

We know we started last week's This Week in Apex Legends news with Apex Legends Fight or Fright event, but... We're doing it again. Apex Legends' Gun Run LTM has returned - and it's only going to be around for a few days. Introduced in Season 14's Beast of Prey Collection Event, this LTM has quickly become a firm favourite with fans and you'll be pleased to know you can play it right now until October 18. Then, it's going to swap out for Control - which is far from a bad thing.

But, if you're more interested in the meat and drink of this battle royale game - the battle royale modes - then you'll be intrigued to know that Horizon's pick rate is through the roof. At the moment, over a quarter of Apex Legends' top players are now using Horizon; and, she's quite popular with players in Platinum and above, too. Looking at Apex Legends Status, you'll be able to see that she's the most popular legend in Platinum, the most popular legend in Diamond, and boasts a whopping 27% pick rate in Master and Apex Predator. Not bad, eh laddie?

Apex Legends' Revenant mains want a Shadow Royale-inspired buff

If there's one thing Apex Legends fans are good at, it's suggesting weird and wonderful buffs and changes for the game's characters - just take a look at these Apex Legends fans that think Fuse and Crypto deserve this unique buff. We know we have touched upon a fan-made Apex Legends Crypto rework before, but this time we're talking about everyone's favourite murder-robot Revenant. Redditor 'Kvetanista' thinks Revenant needs to embrace his darkness a little more and lean on Shadow Royale's shadows with his Death Totem ultimate ability - and, we're inclined to agree.

In their Reddit post, Kvetanista simply suggests that Revenant and anyone else using Revenant's Death Totem should actually be transformed into a "Shadow Royale type of shadow" - rather than just getting the benefits of Death Protection for a limited time.

This suggestion, as you might be able to imagine, has sparked something of a debate online - and we're not opposed to the idea of Respawn Entertainment shaking up Revenant's kit a little. Looking at the Apex Legends Season 14 pick rates, he could be in a healthier place.
