Apex Legends devs reveal battle royale almost had bouncy-ball shotgun

Whether you're personally a fan of Apex Legends or not, the recent Beast of Prey collection event is proof that Respawn Entertainment's free-to-play shooter is one of the best battle royale games ever. However, there's always room for improvement and it's clear that the developers behind this competitive FPS game are always trying to find ways to build on the experience available. Why are we saying that? Well, Apex Legends' developers have been talking about prototype weapons online and, frankly, they just sound a little bonkers.

During a Reddit AMA where Apex Legends' developers talked about "weapons and legends", senior game designer Eric Canavese shared some insight into a handful of prototype weapons that never quite made it to the battle royale - and one of those was a shotgun with bouncing pellets.

Explaining this concept, Canavese detailed that "[Respawn Entertainment] prototyped a shotgun where each of the pellets was basically a bouncy ball... it was pure chaos. Each bounce reduced the damage of the pellet and it was designed to be sort of like a flushing out tool."

Apex Legends' Gun Run LTM originally ended with a melee kill

Apex Legends is one of the best battle royale games out there right now and the recently released Beast of Prey collection event and Gun Run LTM are a testament to that. Once again, Apex Legends players are treated to a fantastic event full of wonderful cosmetics and an unnecessarily addictive limited-time game mode. If you're a fan of Apex Legends' Gun Run LTM, you might be interested to know that the developers originally wanted to end things with a one-hit lethal melee kill - not throwing knives.

During a Reddit AMA on Apex Legends' LTMs and more specifically the brand new Gun Run mode, lead game designer Robert West revealed that Respawn Entertainment actually wanted to wrap up Gun Run rounds with a hard-hitting melee hit - rather than the throwing knives that lend themselves to comparisons between Apex Legends' Gun Run LTM and Call of Duty's Gun Game mode.

When asked specifically about the reasoning behind the introduction of a "throwing knife to kill" mechanic by Redditor 'Peanutbutterpython', West responded with the following comments:
NEW LIMITED-TIME MODE: GUN RUN
Go head-to-head against 3 other squads in a race to master a wide range of weapons. Each time you get a kill with a weapon, you leapfrog over teammates and are given the next highest weapon on the track. Play as a team and get through the track as fast as you can, with some help from infinite ammo, health items and automatic respawns.

Your next weapon is previewed above your current weapon, as well as the next one after that. The boost value lets you know how many weapons you will skip on the track with your next kill. When scoring, if you’re currently in the lead on your squad, you will simply move to the next weapon on the track without skipping any.

The final weapon in the track is a new exclusive throwing knife, which will be available in the firing range for practice during the event. Work together as a team and be the first squad to score a kill with the throwing knife to win the match! Gun Run will be available to play starting September 20th to October 4th on Skulltown and Fragment East (World’s Edge) maps.

So, with that in mind, we know exactly when Apex Legends' upcoming Beast of Prey collection event is due to start. Although, it's worth noting that you should take the following information with a pinch of salt - things can always change, even if we're fairly certain they won't.
