Catalyst is Apex Legends' most "VFX intensive" character yet

The Apex Legends Season 14 start date looms and Respawn Entertainment has been getting stuck in detailing exactly what players can expect from Catalyst and her abilities come the Eclipse update. We know Apex Legends wants Catalyst to appeal to every playstyle, but will she appeal to everyone's platform? Discussing Catalyst during a pre-season press event, narrative lead Ashley Reed shared that she's "one of the most VFX intensive legends" in Apex Legends right now.

But, if you're worried about whether this will impact performance - and whether your console or PC can handle it - don't be. Framed as something of a "technical feat" by Reed, Apex Legends' VFX team made certain that everything would work just as smoothly as usual when it comes to Catalyst.

Funnily, Reed did reveal that the "amazing VFX team... were worried when [Respawn Entertainment] showed them the Catalyst concept and described how she worked". However, "the VFX team really loved the concept and were onboard right away once they saw what they could do with [Catalyst's ferrofluid]".

Apex Legends wants Catalyst to appeal to every playstyle

We know the Apex Legends devs are unsure if Ranked players will like Broken Moon, not that we have any doubts, but they're pretty certain that everyone is going to like Catalyst - and it's clear to see why. Prior to today's announcement, looking at the Eclipse launch trailer, we thought Catalyst might have abilities like Valorant's Viper. However, now, we know the truth about Catalyst's abilities and they're all pretty incredible. Discussing this ability kit in a pre-season press event, game designer OT Harrison highlighted that Catalyst should work well in both defence-oriented squads and squads built around aggression.

"Catalyst is all about controlling the battlefield.. [and the] versatility with her ferrofluid gives her abilities a unique flavour", Harrison explains. "She's a great option for mid-to-long range fights", for players who want to keep enemies at bay, "or to facilitate safer rotations and healing opportunities", for players who need a moment to reset.

Adding to this, when asked specifically about Catalyst's synergies, Harrison suggested that she "synergises pretty well with other defensive legends", going on to say that "a team of Caustic, Wattson, and Catalyst can really turn any indoor space into their own playground".

Apex Legends' Catalyst is Seer's worst nightmare

We know we say that Apex Legends is one of the best battle royale games out there right now, but there's one thing this shooter has been missing for some time: a counter to the scan meta. Whether it's Bloodhound's Eye of the Allfather tactical or Seer's Exhibit ultimate, Respawn Entertainment hasn't introduced a way for players to actually counter these revealing tactics. Well, until now anyway. That's right, Apex Legends' Catalyst is going to let players tackle the scan meta - and we're so excited to see how that changes up our Apex Legends tier list and the Season 15 pick rates.

Diving a little deeper into Catalyst's abilities and how they work during a press event held ahead of the Apex Legends Season 15 start date, game designer OT Harrison confirmed what we were all hoping after watching that incredible Eclipse launch trailer; Catalyst's Dark Veil ultimate ability is going to block scans.

Explaining that Catalyst's Dark Veil allows her to raise a permeable wall of ferrofluid that slows and blinds enemies, Harrison added that "the wall actually blocks a lot of the scan tech our legends have" - referring to the aforementioned abilities from Seer and Bloodhound specifically.

New Apex Legends character Catalyst will be bad news for Bloodhound mains

Apex Legends: Eclipse, the 15th season of Respawn's peerless battle royale, is nearly upon us. We've already seen quite a bit about Broken Moon, the brand new map being added with Season 15 - but now Respawn has finally released more details about the new Legend, Catalyst, and the Ferrofluid-powered abilities she brings to the Apex Games.

It turns out that part of Catalyst's diverse skillset is an Ultimate ability that may at last provide some serious counterplay to the ever-present scan meta dominated by recon Legends such as Bloodhound and Seer. Take a look at Catalyst's abilities in the new Season 15 vignette trailer below.
