I love that Apex Legends' Catalyst was made with love

I don't think I've ever been so happy to be seen as I am meeting Catalyst, the next character joining Apex Legends' expansive roster of diverse and queer characters. Respawn has always stood a cut above the rest when it comes to representation, and Catalyst is a big step forward for the still-minuscule pool of playable trans characters in mainstream games.

The Stories from the Outlands trailer, which gives us our first glimpse of Catalyst, begins with the character sharing her past with fellow legend Rampart, focusing on the planet Boreas and its moon, Cleo. After meeting a younger Catalyst and her lunar coven, we get to hear her talk plainly about her transition during a tender moment with her friend Margo, making her status as a trans woman definitive for all to see. The trailer ends with an eco-terrorism plot against Hammond Robotics, likely leading her to the Apex Games soon after.

Honestly, this hits every beat for me on exceptional representation; her goth witch aesthetic, almost-magical abilities, and amazing voice direction (by an actual trans voice actor, no less) make Catalyst a fantastic addition to a roster already brimming with colourful, standout characters. It's rare for me to see a character - let alone a trans one - that I feel represents me and what I enjoy, but this is partially due to a lack of attempts at all.

Apex Legends Season 15 release date, release time, and everything we know about Eclipse

Apex Legends Season 15 is almost here! Titled Eclipse, it’s bringing a new Legend, a new map, and a long-awaited new feature to the game very soon.

This comes with the usual updates expected with any new season, including a new battle pass which is sure to bring a whole range of new cosmetics and challenges alongside it.

Apex Legends' Catalyst might have abilities like Valorant's Viper

It's almost here, folks. Apex Legends' Season 15 start date is right around the corner and Respawn Entertainment has just released the Eclipse launch trailer - there's so much to unpack. We know Apex Legends' Revenant can break out of bounds in the new map teaser, but this is our best look at what's to come from this battle royale's lunar-located arena next. However, Catalyst takes centre stage in this cinematic and we can't help but compare her to Valorant's Viper.

What do we mean by this? Well, while we don't have confirmation just yet that Apex Legends' Catalyst leaked abilities are accurate, the Eclipse launch trailer does show the new terraforming legend throwing up a rather large wall of ferrofluid - something that looks strikingly similar to Viper's Toxic Screen signature ability in Valorant.

Adding to this, a little earlier in the new cinematic, we see Catalyst launch a puddle of ferrofluid at Maggie and Fuse. This appears to stop them in their tracks, leaving them open to attack from Catalyst and her squad - made up of Bloodhound and Rampart.
