Apex Legends' Storm Point designer on why it's the biggest and tallest map yet

Storm Point, the new Apex Legends map coming to the battle royale in Season 11: Escape, looks to stretch the limits of level design beyond Apex's previous three maps. Storm Point is the biggest and tallest map in the game - it's 15% larger than previous record holder World's Edge, and at its peak, it rises higher than the plane in Kings Canyon.

But was this always the goal from the start of Storm Point's development, or did the geographical extremities occur naturally throughout the two-year development process? Rodney Reece, the lead level designer for Storm Point (and the brain behind World's Edge too) says that from the outset he wanted the fourth map to push boundaries.

Speaking to The Loadout, Reece explains that he pushed for so much verticality because he knew at the start of development that the game would eventually have legends with movement-specific abilities. He says the kits of Season 9's Valkyrie and latest legend Ash were perfect fits for Storm Point's dizzying heights.

Apex Legends' new hero Ash hunts squads with Titanfall-inspired abilities

Apex Legends' next season, Escape, kicks off next week, and it introduces the new playable character Ash. She's a simulacrum (read: human brain in robot body) that you might recognise as the evil pilot from Titanfall 2's Into The Abyss level, or as the overseer of Apex Legends' 3v3 Arenas mode. Now she's descending into the Apex games herself, and having taken her for a spin already, I reckon she has some delightfully aggressive abilities that Wraith players in particular are going to enjoy.

Beach map! Beach map! Beach map! Apex Legends' next season, Escape, is right around the corner, and it's bringing a tropical island to fight on. It's also bringing a the new Legend Ash, the CAR SMG and more, but most importantly: beach map! I had a chance to play a little of Respawn's battle royale in this new arena, and it is delightful. Named Stormpoint, it's the FPS's fourth map, and not only is it lovely to look at, but it's full of cool locations to explore and dangerous wildlife to dodge.

Apex Legends C.A.R SMG stats and attachments

Respawn is once again treating Apex Legends players to a plethora of new goodies in Season 11 Escape. The new season is an absolute dream for Titanfall fans, with new legend Ash - a fan-favourite villain from Titanfall 2 - splicing her way into new map Storm Point.

But Ash isn't the only Titanfall infusion that we're being treated to this season, as the ever-reliable Combat Advanced Round submachine gun, or C.A.R SMG, is also being reimagined for the popular competitive FPS game.

What's more, the Apex Legends version of the C.A.R has a particularly spicy trick up its barrel - it can make use of both Light and Heavy ammo types interchangeably. That's right, those early game scrambles for ammo are about to become a lot less stressful if you happen upon this incredibly versatile SMG.
