Server Maintenance

To prevent further Apex issues, we're planning limited (under 30 mins) service downtime starting May 6, 2021 at 11:30pm PT. During this period you should be able to matchmake and play, but store and inventory services will appear offline and non-base Legends will appear locked.

Apex Legends' new Gibraltar emote raises cultural appropriation concerns

06/05/2021 EA declined to comment on the subject.

Gibraltar is one of the most likeable members of the Apex Legends roster. As one of the original legends in the game, and thanks to his protective and brotherly nature, Apex players have taken to the gentle giant. Plus, it helps that he's pretty useful in-game as well - ranking highly on our Apex Legends tier list and featuring in the majority of ALGS teams.

However, as Apex Legends Season 9 introduces ground emotes which further display characters' personalities - Bloodhound has some raven troubles, and Loba plays golf with Revenant's head, for instance - Gibraltar's emote has come under fire. Māori gamer Taikawa 'Teebagginz_' Tamati-Elliffe tweeted saying that "[Respawn] better have some form of cultural consultation cos that's shit if you're ripping off my proud heritage, identity and culture."

Many problems arise from the fact that Gibraltar's heritage is non-specific. Fan wikis say that he is from the Pacific Islands, which his gear seems to draw inspiration from, but that he is not specifically Polynesian, Māori, or Samoan. However, this is not referenced, and Gibraltar's official description on the EA website only mentions his fictional home world of Solace.

Cheating occurs in all online multiplayer games, with the likes of Call of Duty: Warzone coming under heavy criticism for its lack of anti-cheat systems to keep impostors out. Apex Legends is no exception, and the later weeks of Season 8 were rampant with cheaters and hackers, especially if you ventured to the eddying heights of the Apex Legends ranks.

Your only method of combating hackers - other than contacting Respawn's ban hammer-wielding security guard Conor 'Hideouts' Ford himself - is using the game's report function, which was somewhat limited before now. The same goes for reporting harassment or reporting inappropriate names, which is all too common in online gaming.

Up until this point, there have only been a few options to select when describing why you are reporting someone. There are four ways to describe cheating (shot me with no line of sight, aim was snapping to targets, moving in impossible ways, or ammo or recoil was unusual) and six options for abuse (offensive speech, spam, harassment, hate speech, suicide threat, or inappropriate name).

Valkyrie's ultimate is accidentally dragging Apex Legends players under the map

Ah, I do so love a fresh new glitch with the latest season of my favourite battle royale. Apex Legends' ninth season, Legacy, launched last night, and it came with its fair share of server woes. Those are mostly dealt with, but now players have had a chance to try out the new character Valkyrie, and some of them are finding her abilities have some interesting (read: completely broken) combos with other Legends. Namely, her ultimate keeps throwing her terrified squadmates under the map.
