Apex Legends Season 16 pick rates show shocking Pathfinder-led meta

Despite lacking a new addition to the roster, Apex Legends' Revelry update really has been a game changer for Respawn Entertainment's battle royale shooter. There's a new assault rifle challenging the existing weapon meta, a new LTM for players to kick-back in, and the revitalised legend class system seems to be delivering on promises to add more weight to squad compositions. However, Respawn also introduced a series of legend meta changes; the Apex Legends Season 16 pick rates - after just one week - are already showing just how impactful these alterations have been. Pathfinder, for one, is leading the new meta.

For quite some time, before the Season 16 update, clambering up the Apex Legends ranks has been best-achieved by a select few that sit atop everyone's Apex Legends tier list - ours included. For months, for example, characters like Horizon were dominant and always a reliable pick when jumping into a battle royale match on Storm Point or Kings Canyon.

However, times are changing and Respawn Entertainment has introduced a number of changes that are already having a huge impact on Apex Legends, just one week after the new season dropped - and the latest set of Apex Legends patch notes came into effect.

Apex Legend just hit a new all-time high player count thanks to Team Deathmatch

Apex Legends has just hit a new all-time-high for concurrent players, beating its previous record by 100,000 players.

As spotted by Kotaku, Apex Legends seems to be doing very well for itself. That's because, as recorded by SteamDB, the battle royale has reached a massive new peak of players all active in the game simultaneously, currently sitting at a peak of 624,473 players (it was 610,433 at the time of Kotaku's report, so obviously it went even higher than first spotted). That's an increase of more than 100,000, as the game's previous record was roughly 510,000, which the game hit last August.

A big part of the reasoning behind the player count soaring so high is the recent introduction of the game's 16th season, Revelry. In particular, players seem to be very happy about the addition of a new mode that many have wanted for a long time: Team Deathmatch. A classic mode that brings players back into the fray constantly, team deathmatch replaced the slightly contentious Arenas mode.

We know that the fact that Apex Legends' Revelry update didn't introduce a new character to the roster is a little disappointing, but there's still a lot of new content in Season 16 - and a whole host of alterations and Quality of Life changes worth talking about. However, it appears that one of the most useful of these QoL changes has gone a little under the radar; Respawn Entertainment has finally updated the Apex Legends character select screen. From the Revelry update onwards, it looks like the AFK auto-pick feature isn't going to throw a random character at you anymore - if your first-pick is taken.

What does this actually mean? Well, as per this post highlighting the introduction of the feature from self-proclaimed Wraith main 'Wskiu', it looks like Apex Legends will now auto-select your second most-popular character in the legend select screen pre-match if your first choice is taken by someone selecting ahead of you.

Now, we don't know exactly if this is a legitimate feature, but the comments to Wskiu's post are telling - a lot of people have had a similar experience in-game following the Revelry update.

Titanfall and Apex devs form a new studio: Wildlight Entertainment

Former Apex Legends and Titanfall developers have left their jobs and joined a new studio: Wildlight Entertainment. The developer has been “quietly working on a new IP for some time”, according to the official website.

The ‘Meet the Team’ page features a sizable number of staff with impressive CVs, with the vast majority of them having worked on Apex Legends and / or the Titanfall games.

CEO Dusty Welch had worked on Apex Legends as CEO and GM, but has a legendary career behind him too, having founded and launched the Call of Duty franchise at Activision as well as being the publishing director for Guitar Hero. There’s also Chad Grenier, the new studio head of Wildlight after working on Apex, both Titanfall games, and the beloved original Call of Duty Modern Warfare games.

Respawn Entertainment has introduced several important changes to Apex Legends in the Season 16 update, but none of them are quite as exciting as the upheavel of Apex Legends classes and the previously ineffective class system. From Season 16 onwards, Respawn Entertainment has implemented a new system that puts the onus on new class-specific perks to add a new layer of strategy to this shooter.

If you're looking for more information on the rest of Respawn Entertainment's changes, you'll be pleased to know that Apex Legends' Season 16 map changes are bringing back a fan-favourite POI - and that Apex Legends is sunsetting Arenas to add a highly requested feature to the battle royale.

However, it's not all fun and games. Respawn Entertainment has also confirmed that Apex Legends is still "not planning" to use Mobile content in the main game. But, at the very least, we have a new class system to look forward to with the promise of a refreshed legend meta and new-found importance when it comes to squad composition.
