Memoirs of a Battle Brothel News

A note about dungeons and more sequel news

Hi all,

I have decided to overhaul how the game approaches dungeons, which is a very minor gameplay mechanic.

As some of you may know, there’s a very small dungeon in the early parts of The Abyss questline. I’m not entirely too happy with its current form, and I will be changing how dungeons operate and look. That being said, dungeons will remain a very small part of Memoirs. Expect only 4-5 of them in the Abyss questline.

[h2]More sequel news[/h2]

It’s still very early and we haven’t gone beyond the conceptual phase, but I would like to share the Steam store page link for my next game, Vampire Gangs of MoonFall (working title).

For now it’s mostly concept renders and gameplay details. Expect a different art style as I have a new artist leading the design aspect. Doesn’t mean I will be abandoning the anime/pixel art combo of Memoirs forever, but the next game will look different.

Version 0.25 now live and news of a sequel

Hi everyone! Version 0.25 is now live with a changelog below. The other piece of news is that I am in the very early phases of planning a sequel.

Now I’m sure some of you are thinking “isn’t it too soon? Memoirs isn’t done yet!” Which is true. But it’s also the nature of the industry that gamedevs need to constantly be working on projects to keep afloat, so there is little downtime between games.

In any case, I won’t be working on it until Memoirs is finished. I’m excited to say that my development partner TORii will be taking the lead on the sequel project. Now I’ve made a couple of games so far, so some of you know I don’t usually do direct sequels. But I can say that our next project is:

  • An isometric turn-based, grid combat, party-based RPG
  • A different story, different player character, and different organization(s) you belong to
  • Set in the same world and city, MoonFall
  • You’ll see most factions from Memoirs return
  • You’ll see all 9 companions from Memoirs (if they survive), but in more minor roles
  • Even greater freedom and non-linearity than Memoirs
  • Different art style as TORii is taking over art direction
  • More supernatural elements

Version 0.25 changelog

New quests for the Iron Cartel (Iron and Velvet) and the Old Watch (The Bloody Hawk). These are more on the combat-heavy side of things, but you’ll have some help in both.

Bugfixes:

  • A skill in the Soldier skilltree was previously bugged (Potshot: supposed to be unlocked at level 6, not 16). Fixed on starting a new game. For existing characters, the skill can be unlocked by purchasing an item from Golgo’s in Saint Gorfu
  • Zafra romance quest ending has been clarified (upon finishing the sparring session with her, players can start a relationship through the “Relationship” dialogue option
  • Zafra sparring sessions have been increased slightly in difficulty (supposed to be one of the more difficult fights in the game, depending on level)
  • Shaper dialogue bug in The Bloody Hawk quest chain fixed
  • Various dialogue typos fixed

Roadmap to Completion in 2022

Hey folks, I almost can’t believe it but we’re looking at the roadmap to the completion of the game.

I’ve spent more than two years churning Memoirs out, and it’s been a great and exciting two years. I’d especially like to thank my backers and supporters, and my little community of fans. Thanks to everyone who sent in their suggestions and bug reports as well!

But before I go patting myself on the back too hard, let’s go over what needs to be done before the game leaves Early Access.

January

The first month of the year will be devoted to the penultimate quests for the Abyss and The Stormbreakers. The player will finally learn the purpose of the Abyss as well as Dejah Mars’s plan for MoonFall.

Additionally, will be adding Guild-related overworld quests and more sex scenes, including a short one with Seagrave.

February

Similarly, February will include the penultimate quests for the Old Watch and the Iron Cartel. The player is invited to meet the mysterious leader of the Watch, and Gregarion decides to have a sit-down with a rival Iron Captain, Gray.

Going to be adding some more items as well as sex scenes too.

March

The start of endgame. As I’ve said before, when I reach this point I’ll stop releasing monthly content updates. Instead, I’ll release everything when finished, as it is the best way to experience the game.

Endgame will consist of the final Faction quests, final Guild quests, and a significant change to overworld gameplay. There will be many decisions before and during endgame that change story events and the endings. Minor decisions the player makes at the beginning of the game may have a greater impact than you’d expect.

During this time I will also finish up the adult content available in the game, add in backer items and content, and flesh out remaining features that need it.

I expect this to take about 4 months. At the end of which, if the game is finished, it will be released and leave Early Access.

That doesn’t mean I’ll stop supporting the game at that point. I’m sure that there’ll be bugs and other issues that will keep me busy long afterwards, but the game will be officially complete.

I also won’t be incommunicado during this dev time, feel free to ask questions or otherwise on Steam and my discord.

Looking forward to launching the game!

Memoirs is now 75% finished!

Just wanted to post an update now that dev is past the 75% completion mark! There’s still plenty of work ahead, but at this point it’s mostly adding content, fleshing out existing features, and finishing the story. The foundations of the game are more or less complete.

Big items still left:

Faction Quests:

Each of the four Faction quests will have 6 tasks before Endgame, and 1 longer mission in the Endgame (The Abyss is slightly longer). Yes, this means there will be 28 main story quests (not counting the Guild quests) in the game. Each one is hand-designed, with pages of dialogue, and often with several ways to complete.

It’s a lot of work, but I’m pretty proud of how it’s shaping up.

Endgame:

Endgame will see big differences in the overworld map and the types of mobs roaming MoonFall. The final Faction and Guild quests will also be available.

Without giving too much away, expect the city to become a much more dangerous place.

Items:

Add additional items, weapons, armor, mods and augments!

Sex scenes:

Finish out all the pixel sex scenes and Free Mode stuff.

Backer content:

Add backer quests, characters, items, etc.

And other minor additions

Some of you may know that I’ve been mentoring another gamedev and artist, TORii. I’m pleased to say that she will be continuing to assist me as well as working on her own projects.

Version 0.24 now live

Hello everyone!

The November update adds a new task in The Coming Storm quest chain and vastly expands the existing faction system.

The Coming Storm Task 5

Dejah Mars is sending the player to the Grand Heron Hotel for a sit-down between some syndicate crew bosses. There are several ways to infiltrate the meeting, and the player learns more about the gangs that run MoonFall.

Includes a somewhat difficult optional battle. I balance most battles manually, which means I take underleveled teams and occasionally get utterly trashed.

Expanded faction system: Pursuers, Favors and more

I have greatly expanded how factions react to the player’s actions. Faction locations and roaming mobs will now treat the player differently according to how high their faction reputation is. Additionally, factions will warn the player if their reputation with a rival is too high.

Reputation Scaling

  • Faction Reputation >-30: [Enemies] The player is considered an enemy and factions mobs are hostile. Pursuers are called. Additionally, locations cannot be entered and Faction Quests are unavailable.
  • Faction Reputation >10: [Associates] The player can now rest and switch teams at the Faction location.
  • Faction Reputation >30: [Friends] The player can now ask for Favors at Faction locations.
  • Faction Reputation >60: [Allies] The faction will give the player support in the Endgame and call off pursuers (not implemented yet).

If you reach 60 or higher reputation with a faction, their rivals may send pursuers after you.

Pursuers

MoonFall’s factions are large organizations, sometimes without clear hierarchies. If you become too friendly with a certain faction’s rivals, expect them to send pursuers after you, even if you are friendly with that faction too.

Pursuers are mobs on the overworld that will track the player down. They can be bribed (with a certain feature), but are otherwise relatively difficult for most early-mid level teams. Eventually, pursuers will be scaled according to Esteem.

Favors

Players can now ask friendly factions for certain favors, such as protecting or attacking other factions. This can be initiated at the faction location on the overworld. The Traveler’s Mandate does not offer Favors.

And more!

Some other secret interactions players will have to find out for themselves.
