Resident Evil Village's DRM performance issues are already being fixed by Capcom

July 21, 2021 The latest patch for Resident Evil Village fixes the issues surrounding the DRM

While you might not have necessarily noticed if you've been playing Resident Evil Village on one of the best gaming PCs, the CPU-heavy DRM found inside the game has led to those with older processors running into micro-stuttering issues. Rumours recently began circulating that a cracked, DRM-free version of the game saw better performance than the official release, but Capcom has now announced it's got a performance-improving patch on the way, which will be "available soon".

Research from Digital Foundry comparing the two versions confirms the superior performance, suggesting that the demanding DRM is the root cause of the problem. It isn't the first time a game's performance has suffered from a similar issue, with problems seen in Capcom's Devil May Cry 5, before it removed the DRM entirely.

It's worth noting that the game uses two levels of protection, including the Denuvo system found in many other games, and Capcom's own measures. Not every game with the former protection has issues with performance, making this a more isolated case.

Capcom optimises Resident Evil Village's DRM, and adds AMD FSR to boost fps

Last week Capcom acknowledged that the stuttering issues within Resident Evil Village were caused by its built-in DRM, and a patch has already come to the rescue with an added bonus. It's not just the digital rights management that's been fixed, as the update ushers in AMD's FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) in order to boost performance even further.

Capcom confirms that the patch is available now on Steam, which includes adjustments to "optimise the anti-piracy technology" rather than removing the DRM like it did with Devil May Cry 5 - which encountered similar performance issues initially. Since Resident Evil Village still contains the performance-offending software, albeit a cleaner version, there's a chance the game won't run quite as well as if the DRM was completely removed. Still, some users have already reported an improvement with the patch, where there used to be slowdowns during heavy shooting scenes.

The patch also adds support for AMD's FidelityFX Super Resolution, which is slowly showing signs of outpacing Nvidia's hardware-based DLSS technology in the future.
