How to fix saving on the Steam Deck - guide
Hello cultivators!
We’re making this guide to help you fix the saving problem on the Steam Deck. These steps were discovered by RosefortheHunter, thanks a lot. We’re putting all the info together with screenshots just to make it easier for you while we continue working to officially fix the problem!
Keep in mind that this solution won’t allow you to crossplay from the Steam Deck to the Computer. In order for this to work you have to disable the saves on the Steam Cloud, and that you won’t be able to change the game to English on the Steam settings, you’ll have to change the language inside the game, so we encourage you to play the game for the first time on the computer to understand the story.
We’re sorry for the inconvenience, we're working on fixing the problem but it is more difficult than we expected.
[h2]Step 1 - Install Proton GE on the Steam Deck[/h2]
This is the longest step, but it’s easy!
First of all, switch your Deck to Desktop Mode. You can do it by pressing the Steam button > select Power > Switch to Desktop.

From your Desktop, select the Discover app store (the blue shopping bag icon on the taskbar marked with “1” on the screenshot). Search for ProtonUp-Qt and click Install once you find it.

When ProtonUp-Qt is installed, launch it. You can do it from the same screen as you installed it or searching for Proton on the Installed tab of Discovery.

When launched, it will pop up a new window. Select Add version, search for 7.Orc6-GE-1 (this is the version you’ll need for Immortal Life), and press Install. Please, be sure you’re installing the “7.Orc6-GE-1” version of Proton-GE since it’s the only one that solves the problem.

Yaii! With Proton-GE installed is time to go back to Steam and make some changes on the Properties of Immortal Life.
[h2]Step 2 - Open Steam and go to Immortal Life on your library.[/h2]

Go to Immortal Life on your Steam library and press the wheel for accessing the game settings.
The next steps are all inside of the same menu:
- Select Developer and click Delete Proton files.
[step 3.2] - Select Properties > General > untick “Keep game saves in Steam Cloud for Immortal Life”
[step 4.1] - Select PRoperties > Compatability > Tick “Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool” and select “Proton-7.Orc-GE-1”

Now you’re ready to play on your Steam Deck and save the game correctly. But remember that this won’t allow you to save your files on the cloud.
[h2]Step 3 - Changing the language in the game[/h2]
For first time players - and everyone
You’ll have to start playing the game in Chinese, and when you gain control of your character for the first time you’ll change the language and restart the game. You’ll just have to replay a very small part of the game.
- Start a new game
- Choose your saving slot and continue
- Choose a character and write a name and continue (it really doesn’t matter what you write here since we’ll change it later).
Now there will be some text (a letter you receive) and a cutscene). After that a character will talk to us, just advance on the dialogue until you gain control over your character. Now, press the hamburger button of your Steam Deck (the one with 3 lines) to open the menu. - You’re on the settings menu
- Click the drop-down and choose English
- Press Restart the game.
After doing this, you’ll be on the main title screen again, but the game will be in English. Yaii! Now you can start it again and pick a good name for your character.
