Solo Mode, and What To Expect Ahead

Greetings,

I am Sung Jun Choi, the Lead Developer of Shadow Arena.

I am making my first appearance on a Dev Note. From the earliest stage of Shadow Arena’s development, I have been working with “Byulbram” Kwangsam Kim and still am actively developing the game while listening to the players.

As we have spent approximately 6 months together after the renewal, there emerged a handful of topics to be discussed. Today, I would like to address these topics with you.

First, I would like to discuss the future direction of our development.
The key points of our development plan are listed below.

1. SoloMode
2. ReplayFeature
3. BetterIn-gameRewards – Support Shop
4. ImprovementsinIn-game Chat / Clan Feature

| Addition of Solo Mode

For those of you who played our game for a long time, this decision may sound questionable. At the end of December 2020, we announced that we will operate “Trio Mode” as our main mode to focus our content. In fact, we had been operating Trio Mode only for the past 6 months.

Nevertheless, we observed that Trio Mode brought down the game’s accessibility to an unmistakably lower level than we expected. Simply put, solo players were able to be auto-matched with AI players, but the fun of the game inevitably plummeted as you teamed up with other AI players. This took away the appeal of Shadow Arena from solo players greatly.

Now, with the Mastery System for all heroes completely updated and the rules of Trio Mode starting to take its final form, we have decided that it was time to prepare for Solo Mode once more. Needless to say, it would be revamped and polished from its previous format.

The Solo Mode currently in development is significantly distinct from Trio Mode in many aspects, but they can be narrowed down to two major points.

1. Players’dependence on items will be relatively lower than in the previous Solo Mode.
Players lost the will to fight when they fell behind in farming items or objects during the early stage of the game. So, they would not focus on playing the current match and think about making up for it in the next one. This also impacted the skilled players that were winning as it was not fun to fight against such players

However, if we reduced the effectiveness of items too much, it would decrease the need to obtain items and progress during the early to mid-stage of the game. This then can lead to survival focused strategies becoming prevalent over stacking kills early.

Currently, we are trying various ways to find the perfect balance in the middle of these two extremes. We cannot give any details as to how this will be achieved at this point, but we will present them in the future.

2. Moreopportunities to fight 1v1 against specific players.
You will be able to form an area where other players will not be able to enter.

This will be in a similar format to how Garden of Roses (A), an Ultimate skill of Ataraxia, is applied. The opponent will be unable to enter nor exit the until the area itself disappears. As long as the area is present, you will not have to worry about your opponent running away or other enemies jumping in. This area skill cannot be used infinitely, and there will be a limit on how many times it can be used per game.

Solo Mode is about 70% complete in its development. We will first apply it as Custom Mode where players can create a room and try for themselves once the first rendition of it is complete. As soon as we finalize our patch schedule, we will announce it through our Dev Note with more details.

| Applying the Replay Feature

With the Replay feature, you will be able to see how other player played in their exact gameplay screen. Of course, you can also review your own plays from a spectator’s viewpoint. However, you will now be able to see information that were exclusively known to the player as a spectator as well (ex: play screen, skill cooldown, KDA, number of tokens, etc.). The previous Spectator Mode only released limited information, since it could affect the match results in real time. The Replay feature, however, cannot affect the matches and therefore we included a vast array of information for the viewers to see.

Once our development on the Replay feature is complete, it will be first be applied to tournaments, events, and Custom Mode matches. It will then be applied to Solo and Trio Modes later on. We are also considering allowing individual players’ limited access to the Replay feature.

| Support Shop

Players could only obtain Tier points as rewards from matches at the moment. Therefore, we thought that players could use more to motivate them to play consecutive rounds.

The Support Shop will open after each round, and you may buy more support items with more if you have a lot of Tier Points.

▲ The image above shows UI that is currently under development. Please note that this is subject to change when it goes live.

With Tier Points that you obtained from each round, you can get more support items like Dye products, Skin Fragments, and Profile Icons for free or at lower than usual prices. If you are lucky enough, you would even be able to win a Special Hero Skin that cannot be found in anywhere else other than the Support Shop.

| Improvements in the Lobby Chat Window

Our thought on the current chat window is that it is quite inconvenient to use for communication. Since its size is small, players found it difficult to view all the information at once. In addition, players had to go to the main screen to re-open the chat window that was minimized, which was also an inconvenience.

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]
▲ The image above shows the new UI that is currently under development. Please note that this is subject to change when it goes live.

The new chat window brings a number of improvements. Players can now open or close the chat window from any screen, view more messages, and have an easier time spotting new messages when the chat window has been minimized. Although not included in the image above, we plan to add a new 'All' tab that lets you see all messages (Channel/Friends/Party/Clan) at once.

In addition to the topics discussed above, we plan to improve the Clan feature, add more contents to Sparring Ground, customization option for each Hero, and raise the quality of the early stages of the game to make it more accessible for new players. We will share more details about these contents in the future.

Next, I’d like to discuss the issue that our players have continuously brought up. Some of these issues include the matching system, desync issue, not showing up for tournaments, and Mastery balance.

We plan to discuss more in depth about these issues next week. Moving forward, we will do our best to find ways to better communicate with our players.

Thank you for your continuous support for Shadow Arena.

July 1 (Thu) Update Details

Here are the updates made to Shadow Arena during the maintenance on July 1 (Thu).
* Patch Size: Approx. 335.21 MB

Check out the details below, and we will see you in the Arena!
■ Major Fixes and Improvements
- Changed so that players obtain additional 3 tier points if you were auto matched.
- Increased the duration of the notification buff that appears when you obtain Relic of Ascension from 5 sec to 10 sec.
- Fixed the issue where the Specters in Sparring Grounds and the Jump Gate did not work.
> Fixed the issue where the Specters in Sparring Grounds ran in place.
- Fixed an issue where you could not change Hotkeys in Control Settings if the size of UI was set to below 90 or above 106.
- Changed the feature so adjusting settings during the game start countdown is unavailable. Therefore, the issue where players would jump abnormally while being transformed to Black Spirit is now fixed.
- Fixed an issue where, if you left the party at the Lobby after all of the party members died or your team successfully ascended, the penalty for leaving would not be properly applied.
- Fixed the issue where a part of the Match Result window would be abnormally displayed if you have adjusted the size of the window in Settings.
- Added the feature where you can add AI players if the team only has 2 players after being matched for 1 minute.
■ Hero
| All
- Changed so that you may not use “Roll” while getting back up after being knocked down.
- Reduced the motion of getting back up by approximately 0.29 sec.
- Delayed the timing when you may use “Roll” after being knocked down by approximately 0.21 sec.
- Changed so that you would not automatically get up if you were hit while sitting down or lying face down.
- Improved so that the character would get up if you hit Space key while sitting down or lying face down.

[Dev Note]

The previous skill/state of “Standing CC”s such as stun or knockback did not get applied to players who were knocked down and remained on the ground. Instead, they were applied when characters tried to get up. However, if stun was applied while players were in the approaching steps of getting up, the frame appeared as if the player was still stunned and lying on the ground, Due to this, players seemingly thought that it was a random chance whether Stun or Blowback was affected if players were lying down.

In order to guarantee that Stun or Blowback would be applied even to the opponents on the ground, we made changes so that players may not use ‘Roll’ while trying to get up. Since this would delay the timing of a player escaping an attack, we reduced the movement speed of getting up by approximately 0.29 sec. Now, players on both sides would be able to identify if the Standing CC was successfully applied during the motion, or if the attacked escaped the CC by Rolling after they got up. However, transforming into Black Spirit or teleporting may be used while trying to get up as usual.

| Shield Charge A (Q)
- Increased the damage by approximately 17%.
- Reduced the travel distance by approximately 12%

| Shield Charge B (Q)
- Reduced the travel distance by approximately 15%.
- Reduced the height of jump when charging by approximately 57%.
- Fixed the travel distance in the skill description to 3~7 to match the actual travel distance.
> (previously) 3-5

| Formation Break (R)
- Reduced the first casting motion by approximately 0.15 sec.
- Reduced the travel distance by approximately 17%.
- Reduced the cooldown from 18 sec to 16 sec.

| Spinning Slash B (E)
- Reduced the casting motion by approximately 0.16 sec.
- Improved so that the defense effect would be applied up until Jordine makes an attack.
- Improved so that Jordine would step forward further when making the attack.
- Reduced the transition time from attack to another action by approximately 0.1 sec.

[Dev Note]

In the last update, Jordine’s basic stats were generally downgraded, reducing his most beneficial defensive ability. Nonetheless, his skillset fell short in comparison to other Brawler type heroes, making it hard to use him offensively either. To balance things out, we improved his defensive skills so that the aim on opponents could be targeted more easily.

| Shadow Explosion B (E)
- Increased the damage by approximately 11%.
- Reduced the casting motion by approximately 0.2 sec.

| Sausan's Tremble (RMB)
- Increased the damage inflicted on the last stomp attack by approximately 30%.
- Changed the crowd control effect applied on the last stomp attack from Knockdown to Blowback.

| Gate Breaker B (Q)
- Increased the cooldown from 8 sec to 9 sec.

| Rock Smash A (E)
- Increased the cooldown from 14 sec to 16 sec.
- Changed so that you may grab the opponent up to a maximum of 3 sec.

[Dev Note]

Shultz's strength lies in his ability to use combo attacks to overpower his enemies. However, the short cooldown of skills combined with the relatively long skill animation allowed players to continuously use one skill after the other. Therefore, we have slightly increased the cooldown of some skills and put limits to the skill animation.

Sausan’s Tremble was changed to allow players to combo into other attacks after the second attack, and the third attack now blows enemies away rather than knocking them down.

- Fixed an issue where the “Please try again later” message would appear when attempting to sprint jump from a high terrain.

| Shadow Step (RMB)
- Shadow Step can now be used if you have more than 10 stamina.
> (Before) Requires 50 Stamina to use → (Now) Requires 10 Stamina to use

| Thunderbolt Arrow (RMB)
- Improved the description on Twin Fairy Arrows in the skill description.
- Fixed the issue where you were unable to move or change the camera viewpoint after using Black Spirit skills.

| Twin Fairy Arrows B (Q)
- Fixed a typo in the buff notification message.

| Arrow Storm A (E)
- Reduced the max damage by approximately 22%.
- Changed so that, if you have buff effects from Twin Fairy Arrows, the skill will apply fixed damage or movement/attack speed reduction effect.
> Twin Fairy Arrows A: Fixed Damage 300
> Twin Fairy Arrows B: Movement/Attack Speed -30% for 3 sec
- Changed the number of max hits in the skill description to match the actual number of hits.

| Arrow Strom B (E)

- Fixed the description on how to make additional attacks in the skill description.
- Fixed the issue where the sound effect was out of sync when you made lateral jump attacks after using the skill.
- Fixed the issue where, if the buff effects from the Twin Fairy Arrows ended and you used the skill, the visual effect would be displayed multiple times.
- Fixed the issue where the Twin Fairy Arrows buff effects were not applied when you made additional attacks.
- Fixed the issue where the Key Input Guide would still be displayed even after you made additional attacks.

| Shower of Arrows (R)
- Fixed the issue where you were unable to move or change the camera viewpoint after using Black Spirit skills.

[Dev Note]

When Orwen used Twin Fairy Arrows, it changed the effects of other skills but left the stats unchanged. To deal with this, we first applied the buffs from Twin Fairy Arrows to Arrow Storm A.

Furthermore, we heard from and agree with the players who continuously reported us that the amount of fixed damage from Twin Fairy Arrows A’s basic attacks is way too high. To adjust this, we would like to notify you in advance that we will raise the damage count of Orwen’s basic attacks and lower the fixed damage of Twin Fairy Arrows. We thank you again for your continued support and reports.

| Thunder Viper A (E)
- Increased the attack range of lightening by approximately 25%.
- Increased the auto-target distance and max attack range of lightening by approximately 13%.
- Changed the icon for the movement speed reduction debuff.

| Thunder Viper B (E)
- Reduced the transition time from using the skill to other motions by approximately 0.12 sec.
- Changed the icon for the movement speed reduction debuff.

| Kamasylve Tree (R)
- Reduced the HP of Kamasylve Tree (R) by 30%.

- Reduced his basic AP from 220 to 200.
- Fixed the issue where Goyen would slip on his feet when he made his first basic attack.
> Reduced the distance he travels when he makes the attack by approximately 20%.
- Reduced the amount of damage inflicted by sprint jump attack by 20%.

| Corpse Cut B (Q)
- Removed the Super Armor effect.

| Grave Digger B (E)

- Changed so that the Super Armor effect would be applied until right before striking the opponent.
> (Before) Super Armor effect including the striking motion → (Now) Super Armor effect until right before the striking motion
- Reduced the max amount of damage by approximately 8%.
- Reduced the attack range from 560 to 510.
> Changed the value of attack range in the skill description to 510 to match the actual applied value.

| Blood Flurry (R)
- Increased cooldown from 20 sec to 23 sec.
- Changed so that Goyen would spin for up to 8 times when using the skill.
> (Before) Spin for up to 10 times → (Now) Spin for up to 8 times
> Reduced the max number of hits from 22 hits to 18 hits.

[Dev’s note]

The advantage of playing Goyen is in persistently chasing after and attacking enemies while being under Super Armor and recovering his own HP. Nonetheless, Super Armor effects even for Corpse Cut B, a ranged attack, and Grave Digger B, an attack that inflicts significant damage and absorbs opponent’s HP, were indeed overwhelming for his counterplayers. In this week’s update for Goyen, we have done some reworks to adjust these excessive abilities.

| Sleeve Tangler A (E)
- Improved so that Badal would slightly step forward to grab the enemy.

| Sleeve Tangler B (E)
- Reduced the max amount of damage by approximately 10.8%.

- Fixed the issue where, when the shield is destroyed in Patience Stance, the buff notification message would pop up in a row.

- Fixed the issue where Tagahl would slip on his feet when he made his first basic attack.
- Increased the speed of his jump attack by approximately 33.3%.
- Improved the issue where he would make unnatural moves when he made jump attacks from a high terrain.
- Fixed the issue where the swinging sound effect of Glaive would be heard twice when he made jump attacks from a high terrain.
- Increased the speed of sprint dash attack by approximately 16.7%.
- Reduced the casting motion of sprint jump attack by approximately 0.167 sec.

| Skull Crusher B (Q)
- Increased the amount of damage by approximately 17%.
- Fixed the issue where it appears as if Tagahl is slowly thrusting his Glaive when he is in fact hitting the enemy with the skill.

| Wing Breaker A (E)
- Changed so that the opponent’s movement speed would be reduced by 20% for 5 sec if the attack was made successfully.

| Heart Gouge (R)
- Changed so that he would swing his Glaive for 2 more times, therefore increasing the max number of hits by 2.
> The 2 additional hits of Glaive do not pull the enemies (no debuff applied).
> If you input R key or LMB while making the 2 additional hits of Glaive, Tagahl will instantly make the last attack.
- Increased the max amount of damage by approximately 19.4%.

[Dev’s note]

Although Heart Gouge had a quite special ability to pull enemies close to you, it ended up becoming a typical pattern for both of the attacker and the attacked. If Tagahl used Heart Gouge to pull his opponent closer to him, the opponent escaped by Rolling at any possible time and avoided the last strike. In other words, this skill only meant wasting 1 Roll of the opponent when it was designed to be an Ultimate skill.

Therefore, we have changed the skill so that Tagahl could swing his Glaive for 2 more times and then knock the enemy down whenever he wanted. Since the 2 additional hits of Glaive do not have a CC effect, the opponent would still be able to use Roll at any time. Now, both Tagahl and the attacked would have to focus on each other’s movements and deal with the skill more carefully.

| Winter Petal A, B(Q)
- Improved the visual effect of the skill.

- Fixed the issue where, if he jumped when performing basic attacks in while sprinting, he would fall from the air in standby stance.

| Rockwind B (E)
- Changed the attack range as below.
> (Before): 230 / 350 / 500 → (Now): 200 / 280 / 360
- Changed so that the bigger Rockwind would form only if you held down E key right after using the skill.
- Changed so that if the Rockwind stayed in place, it would not apply the Blowback effect.
- Reduced the number of hits of Rockwind by approximately 33.3%.
- Made the visual effect of the skill Rockwind less intense.
- Reduced the amount of damage per hit by the Rockwind by approximately 23%.
- Changed the amount of damage per charging level as below.
> 0 charged: 100% applied (Actual damage count: 252%)
> 1 charged: 120% applied (Actual damage count: 302%)
> 2 charged: 150% applied (Acutal damage count: 378%)

[Dev’s note]

Rockwind B as it used to be applied a Blowback effect right from when it started to form, leaving the opponent completely helpless. Plus, Rockwind at its 2nd charged level has such an overwhelming visual effect that it even evoked frame drops. We apologize for that we were unable to identify these issues prior to release.

We ran various operations to bring down the stats of Rockwind in this update. To sum up in 3 parts, 1) the attack range got smaller. 2) In order to grow Rockwind, Gorgath must hold down the E key and continue the motion. 3) If Rockwind stayed in place, it would not inflict the Blowback effect. We will continue to carefully observe such skills with potentially overwhelming power in the future updates as well.

| Second Blade: Countercurrent B (E)
- Fixed the issue where the visual effect of sheathing his blade would not be displayed when Sura made the finishing action of Whirlwind.

| Heilang! Sic 'em! (RMB)
- Fixed the issue where the animation of Heilang preparing to explode would not be displayed to opponents.

| Monkey: Reach! B (Q)
- Changed the skill’s sound effects to match its motion.

- Fixed an issue where a message that says “Please try again later” would pop up if you attempted to jump or jump attack from a high terrain.

| Take Off! (RMB)
- Increased the skill’s cooldown from 12 sec to 15 sec.

| Found You! B (E)
- Fixed the issue where the power of Black Spirit would be formed behind even if your attack hit a monster right on point.
- Increased the duration of AP debuff from 3 sec to 5 sec.
- Increased the amount of damage by approximately 17%.

| Laytenn! (R)
- Improved so that the visual effect of the casting motion of laser attack would now be displayed in the correct spot.

- Improved to be displayed a red visual effect when the power of Quturan is charged for 3 times.

| Contaminated Sacrifice B (E)
- Fixed the issue where you were occasionally unable to summon a Shamanic Stick.
- Improved the visual effect for when Shamanic Sticks explode.
- Fixed the issue where the contaminated sacrifice would teleport to a different location after it was formed.
- Fixed a typo in the skill description. (spacing)

| Kriegsmesser Parry (RMB)
- Increased the skill’s cooldown by 3 sec.

- Fixed the attack range to 300 in the skill description to match its actual range.

[Dev’s note]

We have noticed that Ataraxia’s mastery skills were hard for her opponents to deal with and therefore weakened some skills’ effects.

| Don’t Hurt Me! (RMB)

[Dev’s note]

We have increased the amount of HP recovery from her mastery skills and improved their usability so that players can use Durgeff effectively as a support type hero.
■ Black Spirit Skills
| Kick
- Increased the cooldown from 15 sec to 25 sec.
- Increased the distance you travel when using Kick by approximately 12%.
- Changed so that a defense effect would be applied while you are casting Kick.

| Bleeding
- Improved so that you would be able to switch the direction of the camera until right before the Stun effect is applied.
- Improved the visual and sound effects for Bleeding.

[Dev’s note]

Although ‘Kick’ was used to knock down enemies to combine with other attacks, it wasn't used often due to its lack of advantage compared to other Black Spirit skills. Therefore, we applied a defense effect to be active from the time it is cast to until the attack motion ends, so that players can use it to counter enemies’ attacks.
