Making a career in Prison Architect 2!
CharliePryor will go through all you need to know about Career Mode in this tutorial.
[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]

⚠️ Please note: Gameplay in this video may be subject to change before the final release of the game

The Devs have some additional words to accompany this tutorial - read more about what the devs can tell us about Career Mode here below!

‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾
Hey, what’s up! It’s your friendly neighborhood Game Devs here, ready to talk (we love to talk) about a shiny new feature of Prison Architect 2. Buckle in, because we’re about to get down to business.

Feature Highlight #9 - Career Mode

New Mode
For all of the flexibility and freedom that the Sandbox Mode offers, for some people, it can bring out the dreaded ‘Blank Canvas’ problem: where do I start? What should I do next? Why is my prison full of dead bodies? Some people crave a gentle nudge, some structure, and multi-game progression. For these players, we have a shiny new Career Mode!

You can of course still play the sandbox mode you know and love (now with plenty of new control and customization), but with Career Mode, you can also take on the role of the corporate caretaker of your own prison company. Inspired by early Bullfrog management games our designers grew up with, Career Mode presents you with a world map and a series of Campaign scenarios to work your way through. It functions partly as a light-touch tutorial (no forced building, thank you very much!), but also sets out specific problems and challenges for you to work through.
Taking Care of Business
On your world map, you’ll see the different Scenarios available for you to play. Mainline Scenarios will load you into an existing prison with a specific challenge to play. These scenarios will range from a brand-new prison in need of another cellblock to prisons dealing with staffing or misconduct issues, all the way up to stepping in to quell a full-scale riot. Either the CEO or a member of the facility’s staff will introduce each scenario to you, filling you in on what’s going wrong and giving you a target to aim for. Once you’ve completed a Campaign Scenario, you’ll receive a cash payout that goes straight to your Company Balance pot (which we’ll talk more about shortly).

There are also option ‘bonus’ challenges to unlock. Much like Scenarios, you’ll be given an objective to reach and a cash payment for success, but this time you’re starting from scratch. You’ll load onto an empty plot, with a set of objectives to reach, and you’ll need to build your very own functioning prison to meet those requirements. Early challenge maps might be easy; simply build a cell block, and basic amenities, and intake a few inmates. Others may offer little gameplay twists, such as building a prison while receiving a constant daily intake of new inmates which you can’t cancel or delay.
Go Your Own Way
And there’s plenty more to do in Career Mode! From the World Map you have access to your very own Headquarters building, from which you can spin up your own prison projects without the constriction of someone else’s rules. Simply jump into a blank plot and start building your dream lockup. Once you’re finished with it, you can sell that prison and receive a cut of the proceeds back to your Company Balance. It’s basically the free-building gameplay from standard Sandbox mode but offers you cross-prison progression through your Company Profile.

Oh and don’t worry; if you’ve sold your prison in Career Mode it’s not lost forever in Prison Architect 2. Prisons you sell will be moved over to your Sandbox mode saves, to continue to play, manage and expand as you wish.
Things Can Only Get Better
So you’ve completed some Campaign Scenarios and sold your first prison- but what was it all for? This is where the ‘career’ part of the mode comes in. When you start off in Career Mode, you’re a simple Branch Manager. You only get a small percentage cut of your prison sales and you don’t have any employees outside of your prison staff. As your income grows, so will your job title. You’ll gain promotions based on your cumulative sales and Campaign payouts, which means a couple of things: the amount of money you receive from selling your own prisons increases, and you unlock additional corporate Departments to your prison company.

Departments provide a wide range of bonuses: anything from providing early Bureaucracy unlocks, gaining XP faster, to discounts on certain goods and services. These Department bonuses carry across all new prisons you build in Career Mode, meaning that by the time you’re a CEO, the team you have built can help you speed through the early stages of your prisons and quickly progress to larger lockups.
If I Had $1,000,000
In Career Mode additional Departments cost money, and that’s taken from your company’s Balance pot, which you can see on the World Map. Once you’ve opened an Investments Department, you’ll also be able to spend your company balance on building new prisons. This means that you can throw an extra stack of cash straight into your next new prison (on top of the opening balance you’re given for free). This means you can build bigger and faster since you won’t need to slowly increase your funds with a small prison population or Contracts- you can just jump straight into constructing multi-floor prison blocks and go HAM employing as many Workers as you like!

Thanks as ever for listening. We’ve enjoyed reading your thoughts and ideas about the content we’ve shared so far, so keep them coming, and we can’t wait for you to be able to play yourselves (rather than just listening to us harp on about the game!). Please join us for our next article discussing more new additions to Prison Architect 2.

It’s about the money in Prison Architect 2!

Learn everything you need to know about managing finances with TheGeekCupboard in this tutorial.

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]

⚠️ Please note: The visuals and gameplay footage showcased in this video are from earlier development phases and may not accurately reflect the final game. Anticipate improvements in quality upon release.

The Devs have some additional words to accompany this tutorial - read more about what the devs can tell us about the finances here below!
Welcome to the eighth installment of our cozy feature discussions! Pour yourself a cup of tea, and let's talk about what’s really important: money!

Feature Highlight #8 - Finances
Whether you’re a reform-focused warden or a strict overlord, there’s a universal truth to for-profit prisons: they have to make money. Not only do you need to grow your bank balance to expand and progress. But poor financial management can result in Bankruptcy Failure, and seeing your beautiful prison ripped out of your hands.
Balance and Flow
Let’s get down to brass tacks. When we’re talking about Finances in Prison Architect 2, we mean two things: Balance and Cash flow. Balance is the cash available in your bank, and Cash flow is the difference between your income and outgoings. If you have more money coming in than you are spending, then you will have a positive cash flow. Keeping both of these numbers in the positive (green) means that your finances are growing healthily. But how do you get to that point?
It’s All About the Benjamins (and the Daves and the Marcos)
In Prison Architect 2, it might not be a huge surprise that your primary source of income is the intake and housing of inmates. Every inmate brought into your prison comes with a daily government payment, as well as a boosted intake fee. The amount of money you earn for your prison population goes up with the Security Class, with Super Max inmates bringing in around five times as much as Minimum Security. You receive Intake payments the moment your inmates are brought into your prison, and Daily payments are made at midnight every day.

It might be tempting to assume that Super Max = Most Lucrative, but once you’ve factored in the additional difficulty, extra security needed, and the length of service, this might not be the case. Since Minimum and Medium Security inmates have much shorter sentences (and cause less disruption), a well-run lower security prison with a constant flow of release and intake might be a more lucrative option.
Looking after inmates up to their parole and release will free up cells again for more intake, more cash influx, and the cycle continues. Equally, you can invest in expanding your prison and building more cells.
Contracts Payable
Brand new for Prison Architect 2, is the Contracts system. Contracts are split into three types but they have one major thing in common: they’re a great way to earn extra XP and cash!

Main Contracts are temporary goals for you to work towards, such as building rooms and setting up specific services. Repeatable Contracts reward you for the everyday running of your prison, so you’ll earn XP and cash for simply running your prison well. You can complete these contracts as many times as you like. Milestone Contracts are tied to your prisons’ progression, and they pay out at key moments such as passing a population number, hitting recruitment goals, or cash flow. Once you’ve hit a Milestone, the next target will be higher, but so will the reward.
Sell, Sell Sell!
Providing you have stuff, Workers, and an Export Zone, you can sell many in-game objects and furniture that have a resale value. About to destroy a classroom full of chairs? Well, you can get money back for that! You’re never going to make bank by nickel and diming benches and hand dryers, but every penny counts when funds are running low!
A bit of a Loaner
Once you have an Accountant with their very own office, you’ll be able to take out Loans. You can borrow in $5,000 increments, and they will be available in your prison’s Balance immediately. You’ll pay interest daily, and any unpaid Loans will be deducted from your final valuation when you try to sell your prison. You can take out a loan by going to the Administration menu and accessing the Finance screen, you can also pay off your outstanding loan balance here.
Advanced Economics
There’s a whole branch of the Bureaucracy skill tree dedicated to the financial health of your Prison, called “Big Business”. If you want to concentrate on running a well-oiled and financially sound prison, then this is the branch for you. The Accountant admin staff member unlocks access to this branch and gives you access to Loans and the Finance screen in the Administration menu. There are a whole host of helpful upgrades here, from reduced taxes to inmate Labour.

Once you’ve started on the Big Business pathway, you’ll find a lot of helpful information on the Finance screen, including a detailed breakdown of the money you’re spending, where your money is coming from, and a handy timeline of your recent daily balance and cash flows.
Limit Your Expenses
If you’re spending too much money, things can get out of control quickly. Make sure to check on your staff payroll- do all of the people you’re employing have work to do? If not, you might want to fire some of the 40 workers you have just hanging around. Can you make your security more efficient using Patrol Routes and Deployment, and fire some of the Guards who are costing you so much? There are other ways to save cash too, such as canceling unpopular Programs or employing Inmates in your Laundry room and Kitchen.
Failure is (not necessarily) Inevitable
If you spend too much money, there’s a good chance that you’ll get shut down. Once your balance reaches negative numbers (because your outgoings were higher than your income), you will trigger the Bankruptcy Failure Condition.
You’ll then have a couple of days to get back to a positive balance, or you will fail and outside forces will step in and take the prison off your hands. Taking out a quick loan might immediately help pull you out of Bankruptcy but that will only hurt your Cash flow and you might find yourself on the brink of failure again soon after.

Players who don’t want to play with the Bankruptcy Failure Condition can turn it, and other conditions off in Sandbox Mode.
Know Your Value
What’s the last thing you do with a profitable lockup? Sell it, of course! In Career Mode you can find out how much your prison is worth on the Valuation tab in the Finance screen. You’ll see a breakdown of the bricks-and-mortar value, the business performance, and any penalties and deductions. If you’ve had recent deaths and escapes, then that will affect the amount you’re offered. So make sure that your finances are in order and there are no major incidents before you try to sell your prison!

Once again, thank you for taking the time to read more about Prison Architect 2! We’re only a few weeks away from launch now until you’ll finally be able to dig into all of the systems and features we’ve been talking about. Stay tuned for more upcoming content in the meantime.
