In terms of Steam players, it's not been going well for Payday 3. The newest installment in the Starbreeze co-op FPS heist series has launched on Game Pass and Steam, but the numbers on Valve's platform are still dwarfed by its predecessor, Payday 2. Steam doesn't tell us everything, of course, but it's a fascinating window into where players of the series would rather spend their time.

What are the best Payday 3 mods we want to see? We're still in the early days of Starbreeze Studios's latest co-op heist game, but the modding community is hard at work creating new assets to change how the game looks and works. However, it's early doors, and we so far don't have many frontrunners, so we'll have to wait to see what the modders are cooking up.
At the very least, though, the base FPS game is indeed very good when it works; you can read our Payday 3 review to learn more. So, what sort of Payday 3 mods can we expect to be the very best? Well, if previous games are anything to go by, we imagine that mods will expand on the available Payday 3 heists to give would-be thieves more of a challenge. Indulge us, then, as we speculate the potential for Payday 3 in its modding scene over the next few years.

The Payday 3 Steam player count has fallen 90% in less than a month, while predecessor Payday 2 is currently experiencing a surge in popularity on Valve's platform. After hitting an all-time high for concurrent players just after launch, during a recent period, Payday 3 has dropped to number 153 on the Steam most-played chart, well below Payday 2, as it seemingly struggles to retain around 10% of its peak playerbase.

Payday 3 has had a rough launch; patches have been delayed and the matchmaking has been anything but stable. So, while Starbreeze has promised to fix these issues and said more heists are on the way for the co-op shooter, it's currently being eclipsed by its predecessor Payday 2 on Steam.
