How have bees contributed to the development of civilization? ๐Ÿ

Already at the early stages of our education, we learn about the extremely important role played by bees in nature. For example, they are necessary for pollination, i.e. the growth of many plants that are extremely important to us - humans. Without these cute insects, our ancestors would quickly empty their granaries, not to mention that refilling them would be very difficult. In addition, bees are the producers of two unique natural goods - honey... and wax! ๐Ÿง

Today we will check how the second of them contributed to the flourishing of ancient civilizations and how you can use them as a ruler of a Greek Polis!
Let's start from the beginning - Apiary ๐ŸŒท

This is where all the bee magic begins! ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ˜ If you were passing by the apiary, you would certainly hear a characteristic buzzing sound. This noise is nothing else than the sounds of the industrious insects that set off on a journey in search of flowers, shrubs, and other similar plants. When they settle their affairs with greenery, they return to their hive - aka the Apiary.

It is there that they produce wax, which, not surprisingly, was considered a very desirable product in the ancient world. But why were our ancestors willing to pay so much for this unique commodity? ๐Ÿค”

Your beekeepers and other numerous citizens of your empire surely know the answer. It turns out that beeswax is just perfect for the production of a certain item that directly influenced the efficient flow and archiving of information, not to mention culture as a whole. Wax tablets - because that's what we're talking about - were suitable for personal notes, drafts, and temporary records โœ๏ธ as they were easy to carry and could be reused by melting and smoothing the wax surface. They were widely used for personal correspondence, educational purposes, and administrative tasks. Who would have thought, right?
Tablet Makers Hut ๐Ÿ“’

These tireless artisans specialized in crafting the unique good of wax tablets. Thanks to their skills and specialized tools, they were able to coat the board with wax so that you could write or draw on it. Pretty smart! ๐Ÿ“œ As we mentioned, such tablets were used by a wide range of ancient specialists. Mouseion, Temples, Asklepiejon, or Theaters simply couldn't do without them! Needless to say, these buildings are considered a symbol of ancient Greek civilization, and it was thanks to them that society was able to thrive!

Your empire will also benefit from the presence of Apiary and Tablet Makers Hut. In fact, they may not be essential, but they will certainly come in handy in the further stages of the game. After all, a ruler that does not care about the cultural and spiritual sphere is doomed to failure!

In the following parts of the series, we will return with descriptions of many other cool structures that will ensure the safety, well-being, and development of your city. We hope that the buildings presented today will find their place among the streets of your Polis, and that they will contribute to the growth of your magnificent empire! ๐Ÿ˜€ As always - thank you and stay tuned!

Architect's Corner #10 - Goat & Cattle Farm

๐Ÿ›๏ธ Greetings Builders! ๐Ÿ›๏ธ
Farm animals and their importance to your empire

Since the dawn of time, mankind has been closely associated with various kinds of animals. Initially, our ancestors hunted animals to obtain their skins, bones, and above all - meat ๐Ÿ– However, as the centuries passed, in addition to risky and dangerous hunting, we have learned to tame and (in a way) cooperate with wild nature... and this is how livestock farming joined our practices!

The Ancient Greeks naturally also benefited from animal husbandry. And while it's not as easy as it seems, you, as efficient rulers who want to ensure the prosperity and sustenance of their subjects, will also have to take advantage of animal farms! Today we'll take a look at the homesteads of two of them and find out how they can help your empire grow. Here we go! ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐ŸŒพ
Goats ๐Ÿ

These playful, curious, and lively creatures are among the first domesticated animals in history. Goats are famous for not being too picky when it comes to their menu ๐Ÿ˜ this is undoubtedly a great advantage facilitating their breeding. However, it was not because of the fairly simple breeding and cheerful appearance of these animals that people decided to tame them. It turns out that goats produce nutritious milk that is just ideal for consumption! ๐Ÿฝ Moreover, goat's milk is highly valued by cheese makers and bakers!

And this is how goat's milk is used in your city. Cheese makers turn this precious commodity into delicious, fragrant cheeses, which then end up on the tables of your subjects ๐Ÿง€ As you know from our previous posts, a varied diet is good for your citizens' morale, so make sure you have plenty of goat's milk in your supply.

Milk is also used in the baking of traditional Greek Tiganites. In addition to flour and olive oil, it is one of the main ingredients of this meal. Needless to say, Tiganites are one of the favorite dishes of your people, and the beautiful aroma coming from the bakery certainly makes them feel better... and hungrier!
Cattle ๐Ÿ„

Cattle are perhaps the world's most common large livestock animal. Of course, they must not be missing in your Polis as well! ๐Ÿฎ These calm animals spend their days grazing on green grass and roaming around their enclosure, however despite their peaceful nature, they cannot be left unattended. The task of your farmers is to ensure their safety, and good conditions for growth and reproduction.

Although the time from when a calf turns into an adult cow may seem quite long, the benefits of owning these animals make their work worthwhile. If your farms fill up with cattle, you can be sure that you will not face such dangers as a deadly famine! โ˜ ๏ธ Ok, now that we know what farmers' work looks like... it's time to get our hands dirty.

Mature cattle are sent to the Slaughterhouse. The butchers working there are engaged in obtaining meat from the cows, which is a very important element of the diet of your subjects. It is certainly not a clean and pleasant job, but butchers know how important their profession is ๐Ÿ”ช With a constant supply of nourishing meat, your citizens have the strength to spend their days in the mines, workshops, service buildings, or to train their combat skills in the barracks.

It is worth noting that Hunting Lodges are also a great source of raw meat. You can learn more about them in our previous entry right here ยป

The Ruler's Manual #8 - Taxes

๐Ÿ›๏ธ Greetings, mighty Builders! ๐Ÿ›๏ธ

Any ruler who wants to go down in history ๐Ÿ“š should get acquainted with the "Ruler's Manual" series! Why - you ask? Well, in the following entries we tell you about how to make your Polis wealthy, safe, and as prosperous as possible. And believe us, it's not as easy as it may seem!

...and talk to the community and developers about the game!
There comes a time in every citizen's life when he has to share some of his coins with those in power. As long as such a fee is fair and does not drain the pockets of a citizen, and his superiors provide him with appropriate living conditions, protection, and development opportunities, we can agree that it is a pretty well-functioning system ๐Ÿค The problems begin when the ruler gets greedy and loses the balance between the amount of taxes and the mood of his subjects.

Today, we will learn how to keep this balance and make sure that no one in your city (including you!) feels disadvantaged. Off we go!
What are taxes and how do they work

The tax system is one of the oldest social contracts known in history. Landowners, kings, rulers, administrators, or simply the strongest warriors around periodically knock on the commoners' door and demand a fee ๐Ÿ’ฐ In return, payers can work on their land, enjoy protection, and a judicial system.

Things are no different in your city. From time to time, another portion of taxes paid by your subjects will flow into your treasury. We are sure you will not be surprised when we say that coins (called Drahmas) are one of the most important resources you will have an occasion to manage. Without them, you won't be able to pay for the construction of new buildings, as each of them, in addition to typical building materials like wood and stone, naturally requires a portion of shiny Drahmas.

In addition to expanding the city with new buildings, money will come in handy when raising an army. Each unit under your command must be trained and then maintained, which of course comes at a cost. Such costs depend on the advancement and type of unit. A large army, while a guarantee of security, can purge your treasury of coins. On the other hand, an underfunded, small army may not be able to cope with a hostile invasion.

The cost of maintaining buildings works on a similar basis. Each workshop, theatre, farm, or service building you build has its own upkeep cost โš’ Only when your money supply allows you to pay such a cost, will they work properly and unhindered.
Taxes and society

The interests of the ruler and his subjects are not always identical in this case โš– People prefer to pay lower taxes and keep more money for themselves, while the rulers would like to maximize their income and impose higher fees on society. Finding a balance between tax rates and social satisfaction is one of the biggest challenges you will face. Fortunately, the panel you will use while playing Builders of Greece allows you to quickly change the fees charged... however, it is their deep understanding that is most important here!

Let's start with the benefits of setting low taxes. Your subjects will certainly appreciate your generosity, which will positively affect their attitude toward your authority. In addition, low fees can encourage other local people to settle in your city ๐Ÿ› However, such a situation may result in a loss of financial liquidity, which may disrupt the entire production chain in your Polis and lead to the disintegration of the army. The lack of funds also means an inability to further develop the city.

Let's check what lies on the opposite side of this financial scale. What happens if you set high taxes? Well, your treasury will soon be filled to the brim with coins, and you won't have to worry about the state of your army and the fee for the functioning of buildings under your control. What you will have to worry about, however, is the satisfaction of your subjects, who may want to leave the city of such a greedy ruler or even cause riots! As you can see - the right balance is everything!

To make it easier for you to choose the right amount of taxes, you can use the following formula:
Total Income = Tax Income - Building Maintenance Cost - Army Maintenance Cost
How to maximize your taxes?

Fortunately, there are ways to increase tax revenue while maintaining good relationships with taxpayers! The most important one is to increase the population of your city. After all, everyone who lives in it must contribute to the budget ๐Ÿ’ต To do this, you must make the Polis you manage attractive to new settlers and convince the current residents to stay in it for a longer time. Access to services, education, development, safety, varied goods, culture, or entertainment are just a few of the conditions that you must meet to achieve this. During the game, you will discover the nuances of efficient empire management - and if you prove to be a good student, you might be able to get hundreds of people to settle down in your city.

In addition to the number of your subjects, their social status is also important here. As you know, richer families are obligated to pay more taxes. Therefore, their smooth development should be added to the list of your tasks. If you provide your subjects with the right conditions for development, their social status will start to grow, and with it the stream of coins flowing to your treasury. The richest households of your empire can turn out to be a great source of income!

In the following parts of the series, we will return to you with descriptions of many other important mechanics and tips that will help you become the greatest ruler of all time! As always - stay tuned.

Architect's Corner #9 - Barracks and Archery Range

๐Ÿ›๏ธ Greetings Builders! ๐Ÿ›๏ธ

Welcome to the next part of our "Architect's Corner" series, in which we tell you all about the buildings you will have at your disposal as a ruler of an ancient Greek Polis.
Attention! The enemy is coming

Although one can say that Ancient Greece is a beautiful, sun-drenched, or even idyllic setting, in reality it is not without its problems. One of the biggest and most dangerous of them is hostile aggression on your territory. Just imagine - you struggle to build your own empire from scratch. You gather more and more wealth, give a home to new citizens, develop technology and production. And then... you spot hostile units on the horizon ๐Ÿ˜ฑ Make no mistake, they want to invade your city and grab your resources for themselves.

We talked about the war system in the last part of our "Ruler's Manual" series, so today we will focus on two basic military buildings that will allow you to recruit the defenders of your Polis. We'll take a look at the Barracks and Archery Range and check how your soldiers' training is going - let's go, commander!
Barracks โœŠ

Fighting is a difficult craft, where every single mistake can prove fatal. That is why only prepared and properly trained units are sent into battle. The most basic military building is Barracks. It is on the yard of this building that your soldiers practice spear and shield fighting or learn discipline and following orders ๐Ÿ’ช Barracks allow you to train units relatively quickly and cheaply (however not only) from the early stages of the game. Over time, as your empire grows stronger, you will be able to afford to build more Barracks which will result in even faster unit training and recruitment. It's up to you whether you choose a large, but rather simple army, or elite yet quite expensive veteran troops. Speaking of which...

The simplest unit, requiring the least resources and training, is the so-called Psilos. The Psilos ranks consist mainly of commoners equipped with a simple shield, a bronze-tipped spear, and leather shin guards. Due to their poor armor and rather simple training, their strength lies in number, not quality.

The next, fairly more advanced type of infantry is the Hypaspist. Their heads are protected by helmets, and their torso is covered with a simple armor, and a bronze-plated wooden shield. The Hypaspist also wields a long bronze-tipped spear ๐Ÿ‘Š

The most dangerous units that can join your ranks are the Hoplites. Their entire body is protected by a bronze armor and a solid, round shield. You can also identify them by a flashy crest on their helmets and long coats. Hoplites are equipped with swords ๐Ÿ—ก but their weapon of choice are double-ended spears.
Archery Range ๐Ÿน

In addition to classic infantry, you can also rely on ranged units, which are excellent at striking enemies from long distances. They need special conditions to maximize their skills and effectiveness, so that when the time comes, they will be ready to eliminate the foreign threat. Fortunately, Archery Range is just perfect for this purpose! The architects made sure that this unique building includes long shooting tracks, targets to practice accuracy, and an observation tower ๐Ÿ‘€ Just like Barracks, the Archery Range is one of the basic buildings that you will be able to build in the early stages of the scenario. Well then, let's see what awaits the recruits who visit it!

Once again, we'll start with a description of the most basic ranged unit. The only task of the Slingers is to shower the enemy forces with a barrage of stones fired from their weapons. Their equipment consists only of a tunic, a bag, and an iconic slingshot. It is a very cheap and quick-to-train unit.

Let us take a closer look at Toxotes ๐ŸŽฏ shooters equipped with deadly bows and arrows. They are known to be a terror of battlefields, as their attacks are very effective and can strike down entire enemy squads. Be sure to protect them from melee attacks, and they will surely prove their worth.

The most versatile range formation - the Peltast - uses formidable javelins. Such a javelin, thrown with enough force, can literally crush an incoming opponent ๐Ÿ’€ In addition to that, the strong points of the Peltast are their strong armor and high durability.
