Architect's Corner #4 - Warehouse and Clay Pit

🏛️ Greetings Builders! 🏛️

Welcome to the next part of our "Architect's Corner" series, in which we tell you all about the buildings you will have at your disposal as a ruler of an ancient Greek Polis. Discover interesting tips and tricks, learn how to effectively plan the development of your city, and check out how many useful structures you can raise - all this to the glory of a great ruler, such as yourself! 👑
...and talk to the community and developers about the game!

Warehouse

Trolleys, barrels, ladders, and boxes... the Warehouse may not be the best looking building in your glorious city, however, its role is quite different. And its beauty lies within 😁! How so? When citizens of your Polis set off to workshops, mines, and other labor facilities, they will produce numerous goods. These can be very basic resources like planks and tin ore, or more sophisticated products like furniture or perfumes - either way - they all need to find their way to the Warehouse.

When your workshops produce a certain amount of goods and reach their storage limits... they will simply stop working! We don't want that to happen, do we now? Collecting produced tools, wax tablets, lamps, wine, sculptures, herbs, or other goods is always a good idea - a well-stocked Warehouse allows you to survive more difficult times (such as war, riots, natural disasters), but also makes you a promising trade partner!

Now that you know how important the Warehouse is to the economy of your city, remember to build it in a right place. If production or service buildings are within range of the Warehouse, your subjects will take care of the automatic transport of goods. Another tip is to build a thoughtful road network. All of your workshops have to be connected to the Warehouse, otherwise storage will not be possible! And hey - don't hesitate to build a few Warehouses if your city's production is in full swing... "plenty is no plague", as they say 🤑
Clay Pit

As we all know, Ancient Greeks had a soft spot for pottery 😁 The museums are full of beautiful pots, vases, and amphoras depicting scenes from their everyday lives, mythical heroes, and important historical events. There is a lot of evidence that clay pots can become real works of art, but they also fulfill another, more practical, yet simple function - namely, they are great containers! All right, let's follow the path the clay mined in your Pit goes through.

As you can probably guess, working in a place such as a Clay Pit is not very comfortable and pleasant, however scorching sun, dirt, and hard physical labor are not enough to put your workers off! You will need up to five of them, as the Clay Pit is a rather big building. Before you decide to build it, make sure that you have found the right place. The Clay Pit won't work if not placed on a clay field - be sure to look for it in the surroundings of your City! Once it is built in the right place and gets its staff allocation, raw clay can begin its second life.

The first building that cannot do without the support of a Clay Pit is, of course, the Ceramics workshop. This is where raw clay is formed and processed into ceramics - one of the most useful goods in ancient Polis ⚖️ Clay pitchers and pots are essential to the operation of many essential facilities in your City - Perfumery, Winery, Olive Press, or Brewery are just to begin with! In general, ceramics will be needed wherever liquid and loose products are made. That being said, production in your city can get stuck for good if you don't supply the workshops with the right amount of ceramics. Such a close network of cooperation means that problems in the Clay Pit can have a bearing on your entire kingdom, so... don't spare a penny to build several Clay Pits in your area! Although they seem inconspicuous, they are very, very important!

In the following parts of the series, we will return with descriptions of many other cool structures that will ensure the safety, well-being, and development of your city. We hope that the buildings presented today will find their place among the streets of your Polis, and that they will contribute to the growth of your magnificent kingdom! 😀 As always - thank you and stay tuned!

The Ruler's Manual #4 - Trade

🏛️ Greetings, mighty Rulers! 🏛️

Even the most powerful and magnificent city must take into account its neighbors. And it's not just about making alliances or declaring wars. Many believe that trading is one of the fastest ways to earn significant wealth and gain promising influence 👑 This statement may turn out to be true... as long as several important conditions are met.

Today, we're going to tell you all about the advantages and challenges of trading with other city-states. If you prove to be a skillful merchant, fame and wealth await you. If you don't prepare properly, however, your city may soon run out of many essential goods. The stakes are high! 💰
...and talk to the community and developers about the game!

Basics of trade and exchange of goods

The basis of trade is adequate infrastructure. No caravan or merchant ship will come to your city unless you prepare a place for them to stay and present their goods. That being said, make sure your Polis has no shortage of Trading Posts and a Harbor. Additionally, the mentioned Trading Posts must be connected with roads that will allow foreign merchants to reach your city.

You can build a Harbor on one of the shores near your city

Now that you have built the necessary buildings, you can invite traders from other kingdoms. To do so, sign a commercial contract with your neighbors. Be careful! Only those with whom you have a good relationship will agree to make such a commitment 🤝 If all goes to plan, the first merchants will soon appear on the horizon.
How to get rich?

When a merchant ship enters your harbor, or a caravan arrives at your Trading Post, you will be informed by a special notification. And this is where the magic begins! After opening the notification, you will see the trade panel. Thanks to this panel, you will learn what kind of wares the merchant offers, what he requests in return, and what amount of goods he has in stock.

The trade panel is divided into two parts - one representing your goods and the other showing the trader's goods ⚖️ By using special arrows near the wares symbol, you can decide what kind and how many goods you want to buy or sell. Will you sell planks this time? Or maybe lamps? Is it worth buying fish? It all depends entirely on you! Remember that different traders will be interested in different offers - for example, some kingdoms will be willing to pay more for tools, while others may not pay attention to them at all.

No good Polis can do without a Marketplace

Once you have decided what goods you want to exchange, you will see a summary of the transaction cost at the bottom of the panel. Make sure the exchange will be to your advantage (whether in commodities or in drahmas)! 😉 Once you master the art of negotiation, you can simply use the auto-trade option.
Benefits for your treasury and subjects

Now it's time for the most enjoyable part - the profits! Your subjects will undoubtedly appreciate the exotic, coveted goods that you acquired by trading. Their constant influx can raise citizens' level of satisfaction and improve their life in general. In addition, thoughtful, wise trading can be the source of great wealth. If you produce a surplus of a certain commodity, don't hesitate to put it on the market - instead of wasting in your warehouses, it can turn into valuable, shiny coins! 😁

Architect's Corner #3 - Hunting Lodge and Olive Press

🏛️ Greetings Builders! 🏛️

Welcome to a brand-new series in which we will tell you all about the buildings you will have at your disposal as a ruler of an ancient Greek Polis.
At first glance, the buildings we are discussing today belong to the category of food producers... and that is, in a way, true. However, they are definitely more than that! 🍗 You will soon find out that the presence of a Hunting Lodge and Olive Press is essential not only to feed your loyal subjects, but also to guarantee them access to slightly more luxurious goods and to ensure their overall well-being. How so?
...and talk to the community and developers about the game!

Hunting Lodge

Hunting wild animals is one of the oldest ways of obtaining food in the world. 🏹 The ancient Greeks knew this very well, so they often went on hunting trips in search of deer, rabbits, boars, and other wildlife that could replenish their reserves of fresh meat. With the use of bows and javelins, they tried to provide their kin with a warm, nutritious meal.

You too can rely on the skills of your hunters and build their modest outpost - a Hunting Lodge. Be sure to place it near the forest... for obvious reason. The meat they will provide to your Polis may prove to be a very important element of the welfare of your subjects. Remember that a varied diet consisting of different types of food has a positive effect on the morale of your citizens. When meat doesn't show up in their pantries often enough, their attitude towards you may deteriorate! Remember - a hungry citizen is a querulous citizen! 😣

Luckily, the Hunting Lodge is a rather simple and cheap building. Moreover, you will be able to build it right away, just after starting the game, so feel free to stockpile meat from the very beginning of your reign. You will need up to three employees to make sure your Hunting Lodge is working efficiently.
Olive Press

Olive groves are undoubtedly one of the symbols of Ancient Greece - we can all picture sun-drenched slopes filled with tiny, green trees full of juicy olives, right? However, olives alone are sometimes not enough. To get your hands on valuable olive oil, you will need... an Olive Press!

The Olive Press is a slightly larger and more advanced building than the Hunting Lodge, so naturally it's a bit more expensive to build and maintain. However, this should not put you off! The Olive Press is essential for the operation of many other buildings in your city, which we'll talk more about in a moment. ⚖️

First, let's check how does the Olive Press work. Well, the mechanism behind it is quite simple, yet very reliable. The olives delivered from the olive groves are crushed with a huge press, and the resulting oil is collected to be used in further production. You will need three employees to operate the press.

As mentioned, many crucial workshops cannot do without Olive Oil, and its shortcomings may turn out to be very problematic! Lampmaker's hut, Tiganites bakery, Cosmetic, and Pharmacist workshops - all of these buildings are dependent on the efficient work of the Olive Press. Olive oil products are usually in great demand and can turn out to be an excellent way to multiply your wealth through trade! 💰

In the following parts of the series, we will return to you with a description of many other structures that will ensure the security, well-being and development of your city. Stay tuned!

The Ruler's Manual #3 - Citizens' Happiness

🏛️ Greetings, mighty Rulers! 🏛️

Buildings, streets, farms, or workshops may be very important, however it is the citizens who are really essential for your reigns and breathe life into your Polis. After all, they carry out numerous tasks, trade, erect new structures, cultivate the land, and fight in your name. Your subjects will have no problem with serving a wise, good ruler... but this situation can quickly reverse if they are not satisfied.
...and talk to the community and developers about the game!

A happy citizen is a good citizen

This rule should guide you throughout your whole adventure with Builders of Greece. Suffice it to say that a bad attitude towards your subjects can prove disastrous and lead to your end... sounds terrible, doesn't it? 😰 This is why taking care of your citizens' happiness and needs are so important! Today we are going to tell you how can you win their love and hearts, so that you can go down in history as a great and generous ruler! 👑
Food, services... and?

When your granaries run out of food, know that you are in trouble. It should come as no surprise that famine is very bad for the morale of your citizens! The first thing you should take care of is to make sure that their stomachs are never empty. Free access to fresh water is equally important. Place a few Water Pumps in the streets of your city to quench the thirst of its inhabitants. 💧 Meeting these basic needs may not make your subjects completely happy, but it is essential to further improving their level of satisfaction.

Another important thing is to look after their other, more complex demands - you have to remember to grant them access to more luxurious goods such as lamps or furniture. Various types of service buildings may also prove to be useful here - your subjects will surely appreciate the possibility to go to the Inn, have some fun at the Stadium, or pay a visit to a nearby Healer's house.

The latter can be of great importance, because the inhabitants of your Polis will be happier if you take care of the proper level of hygiene and overall health of your city. It's hard to blame them - the specter of an impending plague can spoil even the best of moods. In addition, their level of satisfaction is influenced by taxes and war... but this is a topic for a completely different article 😉
What can you gain, what can you lose

Okay, now that we've told you how to keep your people happy, we need to think about the consequences of their happiness or misery. Let's start with the positives! Satisfied residents can significantly increase their productivity, thanks to which they can fulfill their duties much faster. But that's not all - inhabitants of the surrounding territories will soon find out how well is your city doing and may decide to settle in it! Needles to say, it is very important for the further development of your Polis! Moreover, happy residents with satisfied needs will climb up the social ladder and improve their households.

On the other hand, dissatisfied or even enraged subjects can turn out to be very troublesome! Not only will they slow down their work, sabotage productivity, and spread the word that your city is not worth living in, but they will also (at some point, when their anger reaches its zenith) start setting buildings on fire! 🔥 Such a situation can lead to many unpleasant events - breaking the supply chain, abandoning houses, reduced profits from trading, or even hunger.

As you can see, citizens' happiness is an extremely important element of the game. Efficient rulers cannot overlook their subjects' moods, so always keep an eye on their satisfaction level! Luckily, now you know how to deal with them all!

Architect's Corner #2 - Lumber Mill and Granary

🏛️ Greetings Builders! 🏛️

Welcome to a brand-new series in which we will tell you all about the buildings you will have at your disposal as a ruler of an ancient Greek Polis.
This time we will take a closer look at two structures without which the city's further development would be simply impossible. And although their scopes of activity differ from each other, they are directly related to two key resources you'll need during your reign... so grab your tools and make notes, constructor!
Lumber mill

Planks are one of the most important materials needed to rise up most of the buildings in your city. In addition, they are used in the manufacture of wax tablets and furniture, without which wealthier citizens cannot do. You will need them both in the initial phase of the game, when your Polis will be just a provincial town, and later on, when it becomes a large metropolis.

That being said, it is essential to keep your Lumber Mill working continuously. To do so, you must first supply it with wood from nearby forests or trade routes. The delivered wood will be processed and your warehouses will soon be fulfilled with precious planks.

There is no great philosophy here, to be honest... only heavy, tedious, yet rewarding work. Lumber Mill employees know that they are one of the pillars of the city's development.
Granary

Food production is undoubtedly a crucial matter, however, without the place of its storage, it loses its importance. This is what architects developed the Granary for! Spoken Granary is a building where you can store the produced edible goods and use them later in further production, trade or to feed the citizens.

If you want your Granary to function properly, make sure you provided it with road connections to service and production buildings. Only then will different goods flow into your inventory. You must remember to provide enough storage space for the food produced by your people - when your Granary runs out of free space, your Polis may suffer a loss, as the smooth flow of eatable goods will be disrupted. In such case, another one should be built.

As a ruler, you can freely manage the contents of your Granaries and decide which types of goods can enter and leave their walls.

In the following parts of the series, we will return to you with a description of many other structures that will ensure the security, well-being and development of your city. Stay tuned!
