The Carnival Map + Halloween Event Out NOW!

We're thrilled to announce that our new map The Carnival is out NOW! This map is free to play for those who own DEVOUR. Its release coincides with our yearly Halloween event, so read on for info about that too. You can see a full list of what's included in this update in the changelog at the end of this post.
Step Right Up!
The Carnival might be DEVOUR's most disturbing map yet, but it also expands our love of dark humour, a unifying trait amongst the members of our tiny development team. After the spine-tingling, gothic feel of our previous map The Manor, we also knew the time was right to return to our signature violent frights.

We considered a number of ideas for Kai's demon, but deep down, we probably always knew he'd be a clown. Kai was originally added as a playable character to provide balance to our group of quirky cultists: he adds playfulness, fun and just a touch of suppressed anger... We wanted all of this to be represented in the design of both the map and his demon form.

We truly love the end result and think the fun we all had with this map shines through in its quality and many details. From the hand crafted assets and small surprises built into a more responsive environment, to the dynamically gleeful sound design and fluid yet unpredictable AI behaviour, the Carnival is a terrifying, chaotic adventure that we hope makes you laugh as well as scream.
Lore & Gameplay
While working as a clown, Kai Rewiti was propelled into an insane and monstrous rage that saw him make helpless victims of a number of circus visitors and use their mutilated bodies to summon the demon Azazel.

In The Carnival, you'll avoid crazed wind up monkey toys while finding a way to collect the human eyes that Kai placed into creepy, roaming puppet dolls. Once collected, depositing the eyes into the fortune telling machine along with a coin will push forward map completion. Kai will hound you all the way, and like all good clowns, he has a few tricks up his sleeve...
Halloween Event
There's plenty to do in this update with our yearly Halloween Event releasing simultaneously. The event will run from now until 3rd November 2025.
Pug Pet
A bundle of squishy loyalty to tag along as you banish Azazel and his minions. Unlock this pet by beating The Carnival on hard or nightmare difficulty. Also available for purchase after the Halloween event has ended.
Nathan's Halloween Outfit
Beat any map on hard or nightmare while playing as Nathan to unlock this chilling outfit. Also available for purchase after the Halloween event has ended.
Pumpkin Robe
Collect 10 pumpkins hidden around each map to unlock the unique Halloween robe.
Note: For those who have already unlocked the Halloween robe, you will now retain it without needing to collect the pumpkins on the latest map. You can still collect them for fun!
Bonus XP
With the new map release and Halloween upon us, we know many players will be upping their DEVOUR play time, so we're offering a 1.5x XP boost for the duration of the event.
Unlockable Robes
Here are the 4 unique Robes you can collect in The Carnival.

Hard Mode

Nightmare Mode

Collected all Tickets

Melted 666 doll heads

Time for some new strategies.

Aftershock: UV charge is not consumed for 3 seconds after banishing a minion.
New flashlights
There's no rule that says you can't fight demons with a sense of style.

Digital Art Contest 2025 - Winner Announcement!

[p]Over the past five weeks, we've been running our annual contest for someone to have a piece of fan art included in our new, upcoming map The Carnival. If you haven't checked out our recent teaser post for The Carnival you can do so here.

This year, the contest theme was a wall poster advertisement for a circus attraction, ride, performance or game. We'd like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who submitted a piece (in some cases more than one). The contest is now closed, and over the past few days the development team has been voting for their favourite. This is always incredibly difficult, but it's been especially tough this year because we received so many great entries. That said, we're pleased to reveal that Sandro Luiz is the winner with this beautifully detailed, terrifying piece:

We hope players enjoy keeping an eye out for the winning piece in The Carnival. You can check out more of Sandro's art here.

We also want to give a special mention to these runners up who received multiple votes from the development team:

translucentkitty

LactoseLover

Abaandoned_Coff

GRECiA

_Shieldmaiden

Lalita

Once again, thank you to everyone who entered the contest this year. We enjoyed looking at every single entry and feel grateful to be part of such a talented community. Keep creating!

The Carnival: Sneak Peek

[p]It's time for our favourite kind of development update - a sneaky look at our upcoming new map! This time, it's The Carnival, due for release mid October. As before, our annual Halloween event will launch at the same time, so it'll be a busy time for DEVOUR players. Development is moving at a good pace - we don't have a precise release date yet, but we'll get it to you as soon as we can. Read on for a closer look at what's in store for our next big update.

[/p]
Story
[p]At the age of 32, Kai Rewiti moved from New Zealand, where he experienced an unhappy childhood, to Los Angeles, USA. After spending much of his life drifting from place to place, Kai finally felt he'd found a sense of purpose when he was befriended by members of the satanic cult The Watchers of Azazel. He soon became the group's newest recruit.[/p][p]While working part-time as a circus clown in LA, Kai began to experience a creeping mania, greatly exaggerated by witnessing the happy children and families he encountered - a stark contrast to his own upbringing. After luring a group of victims to an underground lair, murdering them and gouging out each of their eyes, Kai performed a ritual learned during his time with the cult, with the intention of taking revenge on a world that had let him down. However, the ritual summoned the demon Azazel, and Kai became possessed by him. It will be your goal to undo the ritual and banish the evil.

[/p]
Assets
[p]Take a look at some of the handcrafted objects that will be important in The Carnival.

Music box
Maybe this is one you don't want to wind up...

[/p][p]Coins
This time, you'll be paying with more than just your sanity.

[/p][p]Tickets
Well, you can't enter a carnival without a ticket, right?

[/p][p]Big top entrance
It's really fun inside, promise. We'd never lie to you.

[/p]
Concept Art
[p]Please note: the following images are not fully representitive of in-game models.[/p][p][/p][p]Doll
We can't decide if these little guys are cute, downright creepy, or both. One thing's for sure, nobody's pulling their strings anymore.

[/p][p]Demon Kai[/p][p]The man himself - or should we say, the clown. He's got a few nasty tricks up his sleeve, some bad jokes to tell, and he just can't stop smiling at how much fun you're going to have together at The Carnival...

[/p][p]The Carnival marries our commitment to body horror and classic, heart-thumping scares with a sense of fun and absurdity. We are a small, diverse development team, but we share a love for dark humour, and it shines through in this map. We are so excited to share it with you. [/p][p]A huge thank you, as always, to all our amazing players and supporters. We wouldn't be here without you.[/p][p][/p][p]X: @DEVOUR_GAME

Fan Art Contest - Have Your Work Featured in DEVOUR's Upcoming New Map

[p]Want to have your DEVOUR fan art included in our upcoming map? Check out details of this year's contest below! [/p][p]Since we regularly receive fantastic DEVOUR fan art we run an annual, optional contest where submissions have a chance of appearing in our upcoming map. This time, the winner will be included in The Carnival - check out our latest teaser of the map here. We'll also be posting another exciting map teaser in a couple of weeks' time. [/p]
Contest Rules
[p]The theme this time is a wall poster advertisement for a circus attraction, ride, performance or game. Some examples: a haunted house ride, hall of mirrors, clown show, fire eaters, win a teddy bear stall, and so on. Anything that fits with what you might find at a typical American circus or funfair is acceptable. If you'd like it to fit the design of the map more closely, stick to any shows that you might find in a classic 'big top' tent, like acrobatics, clowns, magicians, animals (and any others you can think of here).
[/p][p]All art styles and ability levels are welcome. You may submit multiple entries if you wish. Please note that we will not be accepting AI generated submissions. We reserve the right to use our own judgement for this, so if you're concerned about this being an issue you may want to have some evidence of process.[/p][p]The contest is open for 5 weeks from now until 31st July 2025 at 10am PDT. Art should be submitted via the #art-contest channel of the DEVOUR Discord server. You can join the Discord server here. High resolution PNG or JPG image files over 2048x2048 only, please.

Please note, all text in the poster should be in English. If English isn't your first language and you would like to check phrasing or spelling with us, please contact us on Discord by sending a message to the #art-contest channel. We're more than happy to help![/p][p]After the contest ends, the development team will review all submissions and vote for a winner. The winner will be notified directly, and we'll also publish a Steam news post featuring the winning piece of work. Please feel free to get in touch with any questions in the comment section below or in the Discord #art-contest channel.

Check out last year's winner and runners up here.
