That’s a lot of Claptrap: Take-Two reveals the Borderlands franchise has sold nearly 93 million copies ahead of Borderlands 4 blowout later this year

Take Two has recently released its 2025 investor presentation, and as you can imagine it's filled with all manner of interesting details about the publisher's suite of games. For Borderlands fans, it contains some intriguing sales info, including the eye-watering fact that the Borderlands series has sold nearly 93 million copies in total.

Hot off the heels of the Borderlands 4 Gameplay Showcase, the Gearbox team just dove deeper into Borderlands 4 live onstage at PAX East!

During the Gearbox Main Theater Show, we heard directly from Gearbox Entertainment Founder and President Randy Pitchford, Global Creative Executive Officer Andrew Reiner, Lead Game Designer Nick Thurston, Associate Director of Narrative April Johnson, and Associate Creative Director Grant Kao about Kairos, the new Vault Hunters, and guns and skill trees, and much more! To watch the show and its lengthy Borderlands 4-centric segment, check out the VOD above.

During the presentation, we also announced the game's presence at other upcoming events that fans won't want to miss. Next up is Borderlands Fan Fest in Los Angeles on June 21, which will debut the first-ever hands-on gameplay sessions for Borderlands 4! Then, later this summer, Borderlands 4 will be at Bilibili World in Shanghai, Gamescom in Cologne, and PAX West in Seattle. In the fall, we’ll also be at PAX Australia.

Borderlands 4's loot and co-op are being massively changed for the better

I still can't quite believe that Gearbox has brought Borderlands 4 forward. The next entry in the looter shooter series is easily my most anticipated game of 2025, and knowing I'll be playing it a few weeks earlier than expected leaves a sweet taste in the mouth. Gearbox certainly seems confident about how BL4 is going, then, and that feels especially true from the team's recent Pax East panel, where they gave us our best look at the FPS yet alongside a mountain of positive quality-of-life changes. So if Borderlands 3 didn't quite hit the mark, don't worry, Gearbox has heard you.

Borderlands 4 is now launching earlier, possibly because of GTA 6

April 30, 2025 Randy Pitchford has since tweeted about the release date, saying: "Borderlands 4 shipping early is 100% the result of confidence in the game and development trajectory backed by actual tasks and bug find/fix rates. Our decision is literally 0% about any other product's actual or theoretical launch date."

Gearbox Software is bringing the Borderlands 4 release date forward, and it's probably so the looter shooter can avoid GTA 6. Originally slated for the end of September, Borderlands 4 is now coming out a couple of weeks earlier on all platforms. So if you're excited for the foul-mouthed FPS as much as I am, you'll be squadding up with friends even earlier.
