Borderlands 4 Post-Launch Roadmap

[p][/p][p][/p][p]The launch of Borderlands 4 is just mere weeks away on September 12, 2025. But the team at Gearbox is already hard at work on a Vault-load of post-launch content—including lots of new story content and two new Vault Hunters—and in-game events that will keep your adventures on Kairos going strong![/p][p][/p][p]For now, as we prepare to wreak havoc against the tyrannical Timekeeper as one of four badass new Vault Hunters, we hope the roadmap above offers an exciting sense of what's incoming after launch. Below, we'll break down the types of post-launch content you can expect, including Paid Content via DLC packs and Free Content available for all players.[/p][p][/p]
Paid Content

Story Packs* with new Vault Hunters and new Story Scenarios
[p]Further out from launch, we'll see extended, post-launch narrative content Borderlands fans know and love, with two Story Packs coming in 2026 and the first arriving in Q1! Each Story Pack will include multiple main missions and side missions set in a new zone of Kairos, a brand-new Vault Hunter, new gear to earn, and a bunch of new cosmetics, namely:[/p]
  • [p]2 Vault Hunter Heads usable by all Vault Hunters[/p]
  • [p]2 Vault Hunter Heads for the new Vault Hunter[/p]
  • [p]4 Vault Hunter Skins usable by all Vault Hunters[/p]
  • [p]4 Weapon Skins[/p]
  • [p]2 Vehicle Paintjobs[/p]
  • [p]3 ECHO-4 Drone Skin & Attachments[/p]
  • [p]1 ECHO-4 Frame[/p]
[p]
[/p][p]The first Story Pack will be a bloody, cosmic-horror-inspired tale entitled Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned. As you might've guessed, it stars the one-and-only Ellie, Pandoran mechanic extraordinaire and daughter of Moxxi. That's all we can say about the narrative specifics at the moment (tune in to our PAX West panel for more), but you can look forward to seeing new and returning characters in each Story Pack. In other words, expect to see a familiar face or two in the second Story Pack, too. For now, you'll have to stay tuned for more details.[/p][p]
[/p][p]If you've played any of the full-fledged DLC adventures from Borderlands 3, you can expect a similar level of intense looter shooter action, gripping stories, and killer new loot to collect in the Borderlands 4's Story Pack DLCs. We know that additional Vault Hunters are always a big request from the community, so we can't wait for you to meet Borderlands 4's DLC Vault Hunters. It also can't be understated how impactful each DLC Vault Hunter will be, each offering all-new possibilities and build playstyles with their three unique Action Skills and branching skill trees just like the base game Vault Hunters. [/p][p]
[/p][p]You can learn more about the Vault Hunter included in our first Story Pack by tuning in during Tokyo Game Show 2025 toward the end of September. Both Story Packs are included in Borderlands 4 Super Deluxe Edition, and will also be available for individual purchase.[/p][p][/p]
Bounty Packs** with new Missions, Legendary Gear and loot-filled Vault Cards
[p]Bounty Packs will include new bite-sized-yet-flavorful narrative content, along with new gear to earn and cosmetics to collect—plus a Vault Card that lets you unlock additional loot through gameplay. Four Bounty Packs are included in the Bounty Pack Bundle that comes with the Deluxe Edition and Super Deluxe Edition of Borderlands 4. [/p][p]
[/p][p]Each Bounty Pack features new Main Missions, revealing more about the various NPCs of Kairos, as well as a new Boss to take down; our first Bounty Pack focuses on Rush, the affable leader of the Outbounders faction stationed in the Fadefields. You can also expect loot in the form of a new Legendary Gear drop, a Vault Hunter Skin usable by all Vault Hunters, an ECHO-4 Drone Skin, and a new Digirunner Vehicle. You'll also get a Vault Card, with its unique set of 24 cosmetic items and four pieces of re-rollable gear (separate from the Legendary Gear included in the Bounty Pack) that you'll earn through gameplay. All non-cosmetic Vault Card gear can be earned repeatedly until you roll one with stats that perfectly suit your build.[/p][p]
[/p][p]Playing Borderlands 4 with a Vault Card active gives you more loot and XP via Daily and Weekly challenges, which can unlock additional rewards. Each Vault Card is built around a distinct theme, and can be leveled up at your own pace (no time limits or expiring rewards here). Once activated, Vault Card progression works just like leveling up: it's all driven by how much XP you're gaining. By exploring Kairos, killing enemies, and completing quests, you'll fill up your Vault Card progression bar in addition to your regular XP bar![/p][p]
[/p][p]There will also be a rotation of Daily and Weekly Challenges from a large pool of possibilities, giving you opportunities to level up your Vault Cards even faster. Even after you've unlocked all of a Vault Card's unique loot, you can keep leveling it up to earn new rolls of the same gear until you get the drop that perfectly suits your build. [/p][p]
[/p][p]Each Vault Card can only be acquired as part of an individual Bounty Pack. Four Vault Cards total are included with Borderlands 4 Deluxe Edition and Super Deluxe Edition as part of the Bounty Pack Bundle. Bounty Packs will also be available for individual purchase.[/p][p][/p]
Free Content
[p]In addition to the Paid Content of DLC, we're thrilled to be bringing plenty of free content to all players following the launch of Borderlands 4. Along with steady updates that will keep all Vault Hunter builds feeling appropriately powerful, you can expect these free additions:[/p][p][/p]
Invincible Bosses
[p]A few months after launch, after you've had time to sharpen your skills and craft your best builds, you might be ready to take on Invincible Bosses, who await challengers in new arenas on Kairos. Think of them as bosses on steroids: new unique mechanics, massive health pools (not literally invincible, but close to it), extremely lethal attack damage, and other new modifiers that can make quick work of any unprepared Vault Hunters. If you have what it takes to defeat them, Invincible Bosses drop some of the absolute best loot in the game. The first Invincible Boss is planned to be added as a free update in Q4 2025***, so do what you can to prepare yourself before then.[/p][p][/p]
Weekly Challenges
[p]Borderlands 4 includes multiple types of free weekly content to keep things fresh:[/p]
  • [p]Weekly Big Encore Boss: Each week, players can take on the same boss at Moxxi's Big Encore Machine by spending the in-game Eridium currency earned through gameplay. This Big Encore Boss is a tougher variant with an even more rewarding loot pool should you manage to take them down.[/p]
  • [p]Weekly Wildcard Missions: All players will get the same Weekly Wildcard Mission added to their map, ensuring that everyone takes on the same set of additional enemy traits so the community can collectively figure out the optimal ways to overcome this challenge. Best of all, Weekly Wildcard Missions will have a guaranteed Legendary drop that you can repeatedly earn to get your ideal roll.[/p]
  • [p]Maurice's Black Market Machine: Everyone's favorite Saurian is offering his wares in Borderlands 4 via Maurice's Black Market Machine, which spawns in a new location somewhere on Kairos each week and offers highly coveted Legendary loot for in-game cash if you can manage to find it. Although its location will be the same for all players each week, the inventory on offer in Maurice's Black Market Machine is unique to each player. It's worth regularly coordinating with friends and joining their game if their version of Maurice's Black Market Machine has the perfect Legendary you've been looking for, and vice versa![/p]
Pearlescent rarity: A new loot tier above Legendary
[p]You asked, we listened: Pearlescents are coming back for Borderlands 4, with plans to add them as a free update to all players alongside Bounty Pack 2 in Q1 2026.*** Pearlescent gear drops will be incredibly difficult to find, but their power level will match their coveted rarity.[/p][p][/p]
Seasonal Mini-Events
[p]Just in time for spooky season, Horrors of Kairos is coming to Borderlands 4 this October as the first in our new slate of Seasonal Mini-Events. With each event, you can look forward to gameplay tweaks—like a new type of weather, in this case—along with new cosmetic items and new Legendary gear added to the world boss spawn pool. These Seasonal Mini-Events will only be available for a limited time, so make sure you don't miss them! We'll have more details to share on Horrors of Kairos soon after launch.[/p][p][/p]
Endgame with Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode and more
[p]As part of Borderlands 4's robust suite of endgame content, we'll be rolling out free updates to Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode, adding additional levels of difficulty that you'll have to unlock via gameplay. If you can overcome the challenges of Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode, you'll be rewarded with the best loot rolls in the game, steadily taking your Vault Hunter's power level to unseen heights. [/p][p]You can learn more about all these endgame activities in our Borderlands 4 endgame preview article. [/p][p][/p][p]If you've yet to pre-purchase your copy of the game, there's still time before we crash-land into Kairos starting on September 12, 2025. While we await launch, you can also check out the Vault Hunter pages for Vex, Rafa, Amon, and Harlowe to plan out how you'll shape their Action Skills and skill trees into your ideal, personalized builds.[/p][p][/p][p]For an in-depth breakdown of this info, check out the additional insights shared by Gearbox devs from our livestreamed PAX West panel.[/p][p]

THIS WEEK ON KAIROS

[p]Hey Vault Hunters! Welcome to “This Week on Kairos” - a weekly post where we share everything happening across the world of Borderlands 4, from developer updates to community highlights and beyond.[/p][p]Every Friday, we’ll be here with the latest news, fan creations, dev spotlights, helpful resources, and anything else we think you’ll want to see. Whether you're looking to catch up, dive deeper, or just see what your fellow players are up to, this is the place.[/p][p][/p]
In Case You Missed It: From Gamescom to PAX West
[p]We’ve been on the road (and in the air), traveling the world to connect with YOU. Gamescom was such a blast (literally), with hands-on gameplay, the infamous Rage Room, and talented cosplayers taking on some of our favorite characters. And while we were so sad to leave, we’re so excited to be hitting PAX West RIGHT NOW. Our Gearbox Main Theater Showcase panel was earlier today, and we will be on the floor all weekend with gameplay and… you guessed it, our RAGE ROOM.[/p][p]We’ll share more about this weekend’s events in the next issue, but for now, here are some moments from Gamescom that are too good to not share:[/p][p][/p][p][/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]
[/p]
Vault Hunters Reporting for Duty
[p]If you’ve been online the past few weeks, you’ve probably caught the Vault Hunter Character Shorts. But just in case you missed them, or want to rewatch them again, we got you:[/p][p][/p][p]"Purple Friday" feature’s Vex's retelling of the events that set her down the path to becoming a Vault Hunter:[/p][p][dynamiclink][/dynamiclink][/p][p]"YOLT" features Rafa’s retelling of how he ended up going AWOL after cutting ties with the Tediore corporation:[/p][p][dynamiclink][/dynamiclink][/p][p]"Demons" features Amon's retelling of a run-in with a Vault-obsessed cult much like the one he survived: [/p][p][dynamiclink][/dynamiclink][/p][p]"Family Reunion" features Harlowe's retelling of a thrilling Digirunner chase that resulted in an unexpected reunion with a relative:  [/p][p][dynamiclink][/dynamiclink]
[/p]
Quality of Life News: Sort and Filter
[p]Looting got a hell of a lot easier with the following Sort and Filter features. In Borderlands 4, players will be able to sort their equipment by:[/p]
  • [p]Recent (the order in which items were picked up) [/p]
  • [p]Rarity[/p]
  • [p]Type[/p]
  • [p]Level Requirement[/p]
  • [p]Sell Value [/p]
  • [p]Manufacturer[/p]
  • [p]"Comparable" stats on item cards, like Damage, Accuracy, etc.[/p]
[p]The stat sorts that are available for players to choose from is a dynamically populated list, meaning there will be more options as you pick up more items, and fewer options when you sell or drop items.[/p][p][/p][p]Comparing an item while sorting by stat will also show comparison indicators for each item being sorted.[/p][p][/p]
Filters
[p]Filters have been a longtime request from players and are being implemented for BL4. Like the stat sorting, the filter list is populated dynamically based on the player's current inventory. Items that match the current filter get pushed to the front of the list and items which do not match also get slightly dimmer.[/p][p]This allows players to quickly narrow down item searches by very specific criteria, creating a quick "cross-section" view of matching items.[/p][p]Criteria including:[/p]
  • [p]Rarity[/p]
  • [p]Damage Type [/p]
    • [p]Elemental damage types as well as Kinetic (non-elemental)[/p]
    • [p]Damage type might be for primary or secondary or both firing modes on a weapon[/p]
  • [p]Item Type (and Subtype) [/p]
    • [p]e.g. Pistol, SMG, Assault Rifle, Energy Shield, Armor Shield, Grenade, etc...[/p]
  • [p]Has Firmware[/p]
  • [p]Equipped/Unequipped[/p]
  • [p]Manufacturer[/p]
  • [p]Item Marker [/p]
    • [p]Favorite, Trash, Tag Group, etc...[/p]
[p][/p][p][/p][p]Item counts in the filter are relative to the current filter settings. These two screenshots are from the same set of items. When filtering by Incendiary and/or Shock damage types, there are no Pistols which match those criteria, so the Pistols entry shows "0" and is unselectable. However, this inventory does have Pistols – When filtering by Pistol, we can quickly see there are 3 and we expect none of them to be Incendiary or Shock type, so those now show "0" and are unselectable. [/p][p]Within the Type group, the other options all now show a number wrapped in parenthesis "(#)", indicating that is how many items almost match the current filter. For example, no Shotguns match the current filter because we're currently only filtering by Pistols. If we add Shotguns to the filter we will see 5 items added to the matching items list.[/p][p][/p][p]At least one of those Shotguns must have elemental damage associated with it, since Kinetic was the only option available before. Let's see which one.[/p][p][/p][p]Now we have only one item that matches all of the criteria. We can tell from the Filter list alone that it's a Common rarity Shotgun that also can deal Shock damage. Kinetic damage now shows (7) and if selected will bring those back into the matching items list. Pistol is still selected as part of the criteria, but there are no pistols which deal Radiation damage, so the count falls to 0.[/p][p][/p][p]Now we can see that there are 3x SMG and 1x Assault Rifle that would match the rest of the filter if those options were added to the filter's criteria. [/p]
Mark All Filtered
[p]It's now also possible to mark items in bulk, which will apply the chosen mark to any items in the filter which are not already marked, the exact number of applicable items will display in parenthesis "(#)".[/p][p][/p][p][/p][p][/p]
Send Items To Bank
[p]When items have been flagged as "Bank" a prompt will appear to allow players to instantly send those marked items to their bank from anywhere in the world. [/p][p]Players will still need to access a physical bank in-game in order to retrieve items, but the ability to send items to the bank remotely works as long as there is still space in the bank to hold something.[/p][p] [/p][p] [/p][p]Some of the items we're trying to send to the bank are actually equipped right now, so maybe we don't want to send those items, just the ones flagged as "Bank" that aren't equipped should be sent for now.[/p][p] [/p][p]We still have the two items that are flagged as "Bank" and are equipped. The bank now shows 2 items and our filtered item count decreased from 17 to 15, we've successfully transferred items.[/p][p][/p]
Behind the Team: Hunter Wolfe, Borderlands 4 Social Media Manager
[p]Every week, we’re spotlighting one of the minds behind the mayhem. You’ll get to learn about folks from both Gearbox and 2K, and how each person who touches the game both influences and is influenced by Borderlands 4. This week, we're talking with one of 2K’s Social Media Managers, Hunter Wolfe:[/p][p][/p][p]What does it look like for you to get into the mindset of the Borderlands voice when you're working on something for social media?[/p][p]Hunter Wolfe: When I'm writing copy or planning assets, I'll ask myself: is this unhinged enough? If it is, then mission accomplished! But if not, I'll workshop it. Borderlands is all about being not-so-serious and oh-so-chaotic, after all.[/p][p]
[/p][p]How important are your interactions online in the comments sections? What do you find most important about engaging with the community?[/p][p]Hunter: Chatting with community members online is one of my favorite parts of the job! We're all Borderlands nerds here, so getting to connect with fans on something we all love is just really fun.[/p][p]To the second part of your question though, I think replying to comments is important because it lets people know that they're part of a two-way conversation. Community feedback is massively important to us, and my hope is that when we reply to folks, it sends that message. I want our community to always feel like we're listening, because we are![/p][p][/p][p]If you were a Vault Hunter, what would you be packing?[/p][p]Hunter: I'd make sure to pack a daily multivitamin, because most of the places you go in the Borderlands games look like they'll give you tetanus, and I think you want to keep a healthy immune system on your adventures. That and probably a pistol that shoots potatoes. My siblings and I used to play with potato bazookas as a kid, so it feels like it'd be a fitting, lore-rooted part of my kit if I were a Vault Hunter.[/p][p]

[/p]
It’s the Community Creative Corner, Sugar
[p]Our community members aren’t just gamers—many of you are also artists. Whether it’s cosplay, digital art, or some yet-to-be-invented medium, we’re your biggest fans. Check out this week’s hand-picked, Moxxi-themed fan creations:[/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]- Dauverney[/p][p][/p][p]- vishantidreams [/p][p]
[/p][p][/p][p]- Raven[/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]That’s it for this week—more updates, more chaos, and maybe a few surprises coming next Friday. Until then: keep your ECHOnet tuned and your loot luck high.[/p][p]Happy Hunting,
The Borderlands Team[/p][p][/p][p][/p][p][dynamiclink][/dynamiclink][/p][p][/p][p]
