Borderlands 4 Might Cost $80, CEO Pitchford says “Real Fans” Would Buy It Anyway

Fans have expressed concern over a potential $80 price tag for Borderlands 4, and Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford says “real fans” would buy it regardless.

Earlier in the year, the gaming market committed to its first $80 launch title with the Nintendo Switch 2’s Mario Kart World. As more companies get on board with the potential pricing hike (like Microsoft and Xbox), fans have expressed concern that Gearbox’s next title in the Borderlands franchise, Borderlands 4, will follow suit and also increase the game’s base price to $80. Aside from Microsoft and Mario Kart World, so far other companies like 2K have not committed to the price increase outwardly. Take Two has recently released its 2025 investor presentation, and as you can imagine it's filled with all manner of interesting details about the publisher's suite of games. For Borderlands fans, it contains some intriguing sales info, including the eye-watering fact that the Borderlands series has sold nearly 93 million copies in total.

Hot off the heels of the Borderlands 4 Gameplay Showcase, the Gearbox team just dove deeper into Borderlands 4 live onstage at PAX East!

During the Gearbox Main Theater Show, we heard directly from Gearbox Entertainment Founder and President Randy Pitchford, Global Creative Executive Officer Andrew Reiner, Lead Game Designer Nick Thurston, Associate Director of Narrative April Johnson, and Associate Creative Director Grant Kao about Kairos, the new Vault Hunters, and guns and skill trees, and much more! During the presentation, we also announced the game's presence at other upcoming events that fans won't want to miss. Next up is Borderlands Fan Fest in Los Angeles on June 21, which will debut the first-ever hands-on gameplay sessions for Borderlands 4! Then, later this summer, Borderlands 4 will be at Bilibili World in Shanghai, Gamescom in Cologne, and PAX West in Seattle. In the fall, we’ll also be at PAX Australia.

Borderlands 4's loot and co-op are being massively changed for the better

I still can't quite believe that Gearbox has brought Borderlands 4 forward. The next entry in the looter shooter series is easily my most anticipated game of 2025, and knowing I'll be playing it a few weeks earlier than expected leaves a sweet taste in the mouth. Gearbox certainly seems confident about how BL4 is going, then, and that feels especially true from the team's recent Pax East panel, where they gave us our best look at the FPS yet alongside a mountain of positive quality-of-life changes. So if Borderlands 3 didn't quite hit the mark, don't worry, Gearbox has heard you.
