You’ll get to learn about folks from both Gearbox and 2K, and how each person who touches the game both influences and is influenced by Borderlands 4. This week, we're talking with Robert Anderson, Gearbox’s Principal Game Designer:[/p][p][/p][p]How do you know when a design idea is worth fighting for?
Robert
: A lot of it starts with experience both as a player and designer. The initial reaction from other people when I describe an idea to them is a good indicator to me of good design.  Another great indicator is how well a prototype plays or is received by others. And in reverse, I've found that many ideas I thought were good reveal themselves as poor once a prototype is built and played.[/p][p]What kinds of data, playtests, or player feedback most influence your high-level decisions?[/p][p]Robert: This is a tough question since so many things factor into high-level decisions. Though I can say that my favorite feedback comes from watching the uninhibited reactions of people experiencing content, particularly for the first time.[/p][p]If you could go back and give your younger designer self one piece of advice, what would it be?[/p][p]Robert: Listen more, speak less. This is an ongoing struggle for me (I love to talk), but I feel it is very important to spend less time speaking and instead spend more time listening to others. Honorable mention:  Always leave detailed comments when building things; future you (and anyone else looking at it) will appreciate the information.[/p][p]

You’ll get to learn about folks from both Gearbox and 2K, and how each person who touches the game both influences and is influenced by Borderlands 4. This week, we're talking with Nick Pappas, Gearbox’s Senior Level Artist:[/p][p][/p][p]How do you collaborate with the level design team to ensure spaces feel both beautiful and playable?[/p][p]Nick: My job is to make sure each environment feels like a believable place, like somewhere a faction or creature could realistically live and operate. To do that, I stay in close communication with level design and ask questions early about flow, traversal, and player intent. Once I understand how players are meant to move through a space, I can shape the visual theming to support that flow instead of fighting it. When art and design reinforce each other, the space feels both grounded and intuitive to play. [/p][p][/p][p]How do you handle conflicting feedback from different disciplines?[/p][p]Nick: When feedback conflicts, my first step is usually to get everyone involved into the same conversation. More often than not, once perspectives are shared openly, the solution becomes clear on its own. If there’s still disagreement, I’ll lean on the directors to help make the final call. At the end of the day, we all share the same goal: doing what’s best for the player.  That usually keeps discussions productive and focused.[/p][p][/p][p]How would your teammates describe your artistic style?[/p][p]Nick: I’m heavily inspired by '70s and '80s sci-fi design, and that influence usually finds its way into my work. That said, I put a lot of effort into adapting my style to fit the needs of each project. Whether the world is colorful and whimsical or dark and unsettling, my priority is supporting the project’s overall artistic vision rather than imposing a personal signature. [/p][p]

Minor Update Notes - January 15, 2026

[p][/p][p]This Minor Update includes a new set of Weekly Activities in addition to a permanent increase to dedicated drop rates and buffs for Harlowe and Amon players.[/p][p][/p][p]We loved seeing how much you enjoyed our Season's Looting and Triple Threat events during the holidays! You can look forward to more Limited-Time Big Encore events with multiple bosses in the future. [/p][p][/p][p]From all the feedback we've seen, it’s clear to us how much you all enjoyed the limited-time drop rates we introduced for the duration of the Season’s Looting event. Once the event ended, we had an internal discussion about dedicated drop rates, factoring in both what we heard from you, the community, and our vision for how these drops should evolve.[/p][p][/p][p]Beginning this week, we are permanently increasing the dedicated drop rates on bosses. These changes are a careful way for us to balance the game so that loot drops feel like a meaningful increase from the base game. You’ll be able to get more loot faster without breaking the systems that make Borderlands 4 unique, like the Moxxi’s Big Encore machine. Looking ahead, we are working on ways to make loot even better in Ultimate Vault Hunter (UVH) modes to make sure harder levels always feel rewarding.[/p][p][/p][p]With tons of new free and paid content on the way, we have an exciting year ahead for Borderlands 4. Stay tuned for this month's Major Update, where we'll share more details on the content and updates you can expect in 2026![/p][p][/p][p]Please restart your game to ensure that the update goes through and to prevent connection errors in matchmaking.[/p][p][/p][p]If you're encountering any issues, please contact 2K Support for direct assistance. You can also read the PC Troubleshooting Guide, a list of known issues, or browse a list of Support threads here.[/p][p][/p]
