Randy Pitchford insists Borderlands 4's new release date is "100% the result of confidence in the game", not an attempt to dodge the existential threat of GTA 6

Following the announcement that Borderlands 4 was having its release date moved forward, and much speculation as to why this was happening, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford has come forward to emphasise that this decision was made entirely due to Borderlands 4's own merits, rather than an attempt to dodge competition from GTA6 or another big competitor.

When is the Borderlands 4 release date? The Borderlands series dates back to 2009, when the first game was released on PC and consoles. Over the last 15 years, the series has become so popular that it was turned into a blockbuster movie in 2024 and, while that might have been met with a rather underwhelming reception, the franchise is set to continue with another videogame entry.

Borderlands 4 Is Coming Sooner Than You Think—And Leaving Pandora Behind

Gearbox Studios and the team behind Borderlands have revealed they will be releasing Borderlands 4 earlier in September than previously reported.

Gearbox Studios has made a very Borderlands-esque announcement today on its X (formerly Twitter) platform in regards to the Borderlands 4 release date. The release date is being moved forward by eleven days (from September 23 to September 12) and could potentially be in connection with Take-Two’s massive GTA6 release, which is scheduled to land within that timespan. Considering Take-Two Interactive owns both Rockstar Games and Gearbox Studios, it’s possible they don’t want to step on themselves with big releases.
