CONSCRIPT 2022 DEMO UPDATE (+New Trailer, New Devlog)

I have a lot of exciting news today, soldiers!

First...

NEW DEMO UPDATE

I have uploaded a new update to the CONSCRIPT demo!

It has been nearly a year since the last demo update, so I thought I'd upgrade it to more accurately reflect the gameplay of the final game.

New features in the 2022 (0.3.0) edition:
  • New intro cinematics
  • Updated character designs for enemies and protagonist
  • New NPCs and NPC behaviours
  • Inventory visual design upgrade
  • Updated menu designs and menu controls
  • 16:10 resolutions
  • Combat rebalance
  • Improved combat setpieces
  • New animations for certain actions
  • Updated sound design and new music tracks
  • More save files
  • Object pushing mechanic
  • Mounted machine gun turret mechanic
  • New visual effects for fire, smoke, gas and explosions
  • Updated and more detailed map
  • Puzzle inspection screen is more intuitive (inspired by RE2R)
  • Enemy corpses persist
  • HD button prompts
  • Many smaller bug fixes and improvements

If you've already played the 2021 version, this won't offer any new areas - it's just a refinement of the same chunk of the game. Saves are not compatible with the previous demo either.

NEW DEVLOG

I only just recently returned from my trip to Gamescom and Verdun! You can read my recap here.

Gamescom was a great experience, and travelling through the hills of Verdun for the first time gave me a lot of inspiration for the game.

I spent a week following the old trench lines and exploring overgrown abandoned forts. CONSCRIPT is going to become extra authentic now!

As always, make sure to follow the Conscript Twitter or join the Discord for more frequent updates.

And if you haven't already, make sure to wishlist the game! It really helps me out.

Thank you, stay safe everyone!

CONSCRIPT @ Gamescom 2022 + August Devlog

Gamescom 2022

Hey everyone!

Exciting news, I'll be taking CONSCRIPT to Gamescom 2022 to showcase a new build in the business area under the official Australia booth.

I've been working on this project largely by myself for around 5 years now, so it's surreal that I've made it to this point. Thank you all for the support so far.

Press, media or publishers - let me know if you wanna have a chat. (Hall 3.2, Stand C010 - D019).

New Screenshots

Here's some new screenshots from development. I also went back and cleaned up the design of most menus in the game. I want to fully embrace the WW1 theme and stay away from the minimalist design that most games these days have.

Check out the screenshots below, mild spoiler warnings apply.

2022 Devlog Roundup + New Media

Hey everyone! Thought I'd share some new content from my 2022 devlogs here as a Steam update - as I know some of you probably don't follow me across all platforms.

Mild spoiler warnings apply, of course.

First, here's a mini trailer I put together for the #PitchYaGame event on Twitter.

And here's some new miscellaneous screenshots from development! Again, these may be considered mild spoilers. The focus here is on showcasing the environment variety of CONSCRIPT. Initially I had planned on having the game only take place in a trench, but over time the scope of the game grew to include much more! I feel like I'm really getting a lot of mileage out of the WW1 theme.

Here's a roundup of the devlogs I've published in 2022 so far.

And here to read the June 2022 Kickstarter Devlog.

I know a lot of you are curious as to how development is going. The truth is, it's actually going pretty good! I've been making heaps of progress this year, but there is still quite a lot of work to do which is why I've yet to announce a concrete release date. I'm still working as hard as ever, but solo development unfortunately takes a long time, and I'm not going to compromise my vision under any circumstance. Thanks for your patience!

CONSCRIPT Demo v0.2.0.5 Update

Hey soldiers! Hope you've all been enjoying the new demo over spooky season.

v0.2.0.5 of the CONSCRIPT Demo is now live. This patch contains quite a few changes in response to feedback I've gathered over the past two weeks.

v0.2.0.5
  • Major changes made to melee durability system. Melee weapons still have durability but they are not discarded upon breaking (you can still do that manually in the inventory if you want). Broken weapons can still be used but their power is greatly reduced and you can no longer get critical hits with them. This should help solve the "Breath of the Wild" dillemma.
  • There is now only one shovel in the intro to compensate.
  • Added new item - Weapon Repair Kit. Can be found in the overworld or purchased from the merchant for 30 cigarettes. Using this with a damaged melee weapon will restore it to full strength. (You’ll have to start a new file to have it appear).
  • Melee weapons in itembox show durability percent.
  • For the knife and shovel, it now takes a fully charged melee strike to break barrels. This was to help demonstrate that “stronger attack = more damage and stun” and onboard players confused by the melee system. Stronger weapons like the club will be able to smash them with a weak attack.
  • A fully focused rifle shot or a fully charged melee strike will kill basic enemies in one shot if they haven’t spotted you yet. This helps give the rifle weapon class it's own unique advantage.
  • Added a very slight acceleration to player movement when going from idle to run states. May help give the movement a little more weight.
  • You can roll off ledges.
  • Player sprint speed increased slightly.
  • If a trench raider is below 50% health they cannot sprint anymore.
  • Trench raiders more inclined to kick you away to avoid player stunlocking them with melee.
  • Some extra slight and subtle environmental tutorilization in the intro. It is now a bit clearer that the first enemy is in fact trying to kill you (some people thought he was an ally).
  • Button tutorial pop ups appear. These can be turned off any time in the options.
  • Short objective notifications appear to help you remember what the current goal is (similar to RE2 Remake). These can be viewed on the map screen at any time.
  • Wearing the torch makes it easier for enemies to spot you.
  • Steam screenshots now work.
  • Fastest clear time can be viewed from the main menu results screen.
  • Menu controls are now affected by control rebind settings.
  • Smaller bug fixes and optimization.

*This update may cause some issues with older saves. I'd start a new file just to be sure.

Remember to post feedback in this thread if you have any thoughts or feeling about the demo! I'm always open to feedback.

If you find any bugs or problems, make sure to post it in the bug report thread. There are still a few issues I'm currently ironing out.

Thanks.

NEW CONSCRIPT DEMO AVAILABLE!

The new CONSCRIPT DEMO is now live! Just in time for Melbourne International Games Week and the Steam Next Fest.

What are the differences between the 2020 & 2021 demo?

  • New intro sequence & areas to explore.
  • New combat mechanics.
  • New movement mechanics.
  • New items and equipment.
  • New enemy types and enemy AI improvements.
  • Trade items and upgrade weapons at the merchant.
  • Map system improvements.
  • Unlimited save and checkpoint options.
  • Countless bug fixes, UX improvements and QOL features.
  • + Much more.

Make sure to spread the word to all survival horror / WW1 fans you know! I am still just a solo dev with no big publisher backing or support - so I'll need the help of this dedicated community to make sure CONSCRIPT becomes as big as it can possibly be!

Let me know what you think over on the Steam Forums.

And remember to follow Conscript on Twitter and join the Discord!

Enjoy, my friends!
