Dev Log #9 - Story

Hey everyone!

Welcome to dev log #9 'Story'

Last week we said we'd be covering audio this week, however, due to things really blowing up for us the past few days we haven't had the time to do that area justice. Hopefully it'll make it into next weeks log, sorry about that folks! Instead we're taking a deep dive into the narrative.

We know what you're thinking - wait this game actually has a story? The answer is unequivocally yes! It's light hearted and unfolds untraditionally but there is a narrative there!

Last week's developer log is available here where we talked about soaps, nozzles and much more!

We also had our first ever FuturLab Friday's live stream where we covered a lot of the new things in PowerWash simulator shown in past devlogs and some even from this one, you can catch that here:

Onto this weeks Shakespearian dev log!

How The Story Unfolds

Your tablet is the one stop shop for your business but it's also great for socialising and talking with the folks you work with! You'll find yourself introduced to characters via messages on your tablet that will pop up during the missions. The characters you already are working for will also talk to you whilst you are cleaning up their mess, especially if you end up uncovering things that are particularly sentimental. New characters will be introduced that have overlapping stories and friends and clients they are linked to that will progress the story in the career mode.

You can use the tablet at any time to look at past messages if you miss them pop up!

We don't want to spoil too much of the story, but for now we'll intro you to the start of the game and some of the characters you'll be introduced to!

The Beginning

You're looking to start a business – but what? You decide power washing is super satisfying and you'd like to turn it into a full time gig. You put your good friend Harper Shaw, a bargain hunter and auction lot buyer up to the task of finding you the perfect vehicle for your new enterprise.

What's that it's already got the perfect logo?

Cal

Through completing various jobs, you get to know the citizens of Muckingham, the small town in which the game is set, helping wash away their various problems. Figuratively... and literally!

The first client you are introduced to is Cal, Harper Shaw's new disgruntled neighbour. They are a volcanologist, who’s moved back into town to study Mount Rushless, the local volcano, and to help look after his ageing parents. He's so worked up as he bought a house without even looking at a picture of the back garden. He thinks the previous owners might have even owned rhinos it's that dirty...

Wash their back yard and

Meet Some More Clients

Cal's grandpa will also be making an appearance,

The Park Warden will be getting in touch first about kids mysteriously coming down with a curious form of dermatitis and some fretful folks are complaining. The Park Warden is sure it has nothing to do with the dirt but wants to humour them anyway with a clean!

Dev Log #8 - Soap & Rotations

Hey everyone!

Welcome to dev log #8 'Soap & Rotations'

Give this weeks dev log a shake and soapy suds will bubble out! We have a bunch of things to 'come clean' about this week as we press forward towards Early Access release.

Last week's developer log is available here where we talked about ladders, wash replay and more!

Onto this weeks squeaky clean dev log!

Soap

A soap attachment was originally a community suggestion following the itch.io demo that we thought would be fun to implement! These consumables are available to buy in the shop to unlock for good but they need refilling which will cut into the profits of your power washing business.

There's different soap types for different materials. In the top left of the HUD pointing your power washer at an object will indicate what category the surface falls under and which soap type will clean the fastest.

Liquids help with cleaning tougher dirt types, especially when you are using a weaker power washer. They are also great at cleaning quickly in a large area but will run out quickly and be costly for general washing.

Only one cleaning liquid can be attached to a power washer at any time. They can also only be used when the 65 degree ‘Soap’ nozzle is attached. While any cleaning liquid can be used, matching the correct one to the material will get the quickest clean.

These are all of the soap types that will be available for the initial Early Access:

  • Universal Cleaner - A good all-rounder for to remove dirt from any surface
  • Metal Cleaner - Best on vehicle bodies / other metal surfaces
  • Wheel Cleaner - Best on vehicle alloys / hub caps
  • Plastics Cleaner - Best on garden furniture, certain window frames and other plastic surfaces
  • Wood Cleaner - Best on wooden houses and other wooden surfaces
  • Glass Cleaner - Best on windscreens, windows and skylights
  • Stone Cleaner - Best on patio terraces, facades and garden walls

Be sure to check out our social media for when the Tweet goes live with the audio from this GIF as the bubble sound is super satisfying!

Twitter 7PM GMT+1

As always we'd love to hear your feedback on the soap feature and if there's anything similar you'd like to see!

Nozzle Rotation

Seamlessly switch the nozzle between horizontal and vertical water beams to spray all surfaces as efficiently as possible! For those artistic folks out there, it could also add to spraying wavy patterns on walls, floors and anywhere else good dirt drawings go.

Since first highlighting this on social media we've also added a subtle nozzle turning noise and also made sure that the rotation is remembered between nozzles.

Whilst nozzle rotations were planned, it had been a hot community request and something several streamers had asked for playing the demo. We're happy that it's ready ahead of Early Access launch and can't wait for everyone to try it!

Race Car

Grandpa Miller's old race car has had some improvements since we first showed it off. Yes, it is still dirty but once you peel off the moss and rust on the exterior there is a much more handsome machine below.

Can you pick up on any of the jokey sponsors on the car?

That's All Folks

As always we'd love to hear feedback on anything shown today, so please let us know any of your thoughts in the comments below! :)

We hope this wasn't too 'sud'den of an end to the dev log... yes, that was a terrible joke! We'll see you next time for a dev log all about audio and how we're making the game as satisfying as possible to the ears.

Dev Log #7 - Rewind, Ladders & Highlights

Hey everyone!

Welcome to dev log #7 'Rewind, Ladders & Highlights'

This weeks dev log will let you travel back in time, climb to the tallest building and find the grime hiding in plain sight.

Last week's developer log is available here where we talked about getting repeat customers in familiar areas, map zones and dirt game design!

Onto this weeks content heavy log!

Rewind

After finishing a job, you'll be able to see a replay of your power washing exploits unfold before your very eyes.

At the moment this is a sped up video of your washing. To achieve this we added a fixed camera to each job which records whilst washing to then compile into your replay.

We hope that people could get creative with it, especially with washing art in a time-lapse and potentially even creating rudimentary dirt gifs with the system.

We'd love to hear your feedback on this feature and if it is something you like!

Highlight

With large, intricate and sometimes obscured dirt in the maps we've added a system to highlight any unwashed grime to you with a yellow flash. This is done at a tap of a button and can quickly lead you to that 0.1% of a job you still need to complete.

This also goes alongside the details menu which lists each part and the percentage of dirt you've already washed off of that area.

The highlight feature was available in our itch.io demo but has only just been reinputted back into the game ready for an Early Access launch. Though, we're still fine tuning it and can't wait for some more feedback soon!

Ladders

We've shown off scaffolding before which can be placed and climbed but we haven't revealed the more sophisticated ladder. The ladder, due to its precise angled nature and extra gravity related safety considerations is set to snap to pre-set ladder locations.

As you can see here:

Allowing you to get to roofs and other relatively high spots.

Are you ready for a climb?

Mega Scaffolding

Some of the structures in PWS are rather taller than simple houses and to wash the outside of them requires some equally large structures... meet the mega scaffold.

Note: this is WIP but for now you can get to the top of the fire station's tower to clean all of the exterior. We just thought this would be fun to show off so let us know any of your feelings below!

Turbo Nozzle

Something else we've teased recently in our social media is the turbo nozzle! This rotating pencil jet is ideal for blasting away some of the toughest dirt. It's rotations are also great for making perfect circles and have a lot of potential for grime art!

How satisfying is that?

That's All Folks

As always we'd love to hear feedback on anything shown today, so please let us know any of your thoughts in the comments below! :)

That's all for this content rich developer log, we've got even more great additions to show in the next one!

Dev Log #6 - In The Zone

Hey everyone!

Welcome to dev log #6 'In The Zone!'

No, we're not entering a danger zone, but we will be talking in today's dev log how the areas you'll be cleaning will be tied together and take you both to new places but also visiting familiar zones for repeat customers!

Last week's developer log is available here where we talked about the garage you will be calling home and how you will be booking jobs on your tablet!

Onto this weeks log!

Zones

Last week we covered one of the smaller zones that exist in the world of PWS, which was your home garage where your first and following odd jobs take place.

The role of a power washer will take you outside of your home to new exciting places to clean, you'll also have repeat customers and those from word of mouth as you progress in your career.

One of your first jobs will take you to the quite filthy backyard of a volcanologist, who's decided now, when the volcano is about to erupt is a good time for a clean.

It's not your job to question!

Repeat Custom

Each job you complete in the career mode can open up new opportunities both from word of mouth and for the same satisfied customers. You will find yourself in this zone washing a car of a grandpa and the whole bungalow of someone in the same neighbourhood.

Last week we showed you the tablet and during the game you will get messages from your own client's and potential clients about jobs that become available.

Dirty Map Design

In this volcanic suburb, you can also see some small parts of dirt design we have been working on to breath life and more realism to the maps. For example, this birdhouse is covered in... well, bird poo! This is also replicated for areas that are often soiled by pesky pigeons, like below trees where they nest and on the top of roofs.

That's All Folks

As always we'd love to hear feedback on anything shown today, so please let us know any of your thoughts in the comments below! :)

That's all for this adventurous developer log, we'll see you all in the next one!
