The Fabled Woods News

The Fabled Woods is live & First update in the works!

Greetings, explorer!

Finally, the big day is here: After more than two years, The Fabled Woods is finally out! ːsteamhappyː

And I really can't tell you how I feel right now. It's a mixture of excitement, fear and nervousness. A roller coaster of emotions. I can tell you that!

And you know, after the launch is before the launch. Taking a look at several streams and listening to you guys out there brought a bunch of issues to my list unfortunately. And I am really sorry about that! That was definitely not the plan, believe me that. ːsteamsadː

I am already working on fixing the issues. A new build is uploaded for QA already and is reviewed right now. And as soon as we checked it, I will get it out to all of you out there. Promise!

Here is a short list of the issues that I know and that I am working on:

  • First purgatory world rock is not able to be picked up
  • Localization is messed up with Russian, Japanese and French in the settings
  • Black screen when going through close to the end of the game
  • When reloading a game after starting there is an infinite loading screen

Once again - sorry for the problems you guys have out there. I hope you still have fun with my little game and I am doing everything to help you out!

All feedback is of course welcome, be it positive or negative! Please share it with me on The Fabled Woods Discord or in the Steam Community. Thank you very much for your support! ❤️

Stay safe!
Joe

Frequently asked questions, answers and some facts!

Greetings, explorer!

We are getting closer and closer to the release of The Fabled Woods with every minute that passes. And with each passing minute I get more and more excited. And anxious. And nervous. A roller coaster of emotions. So how is this going to be in two days, just before the game is available? ːsteamhappyː

Since I have received a bunch of questions in the last few days, I would like to give you some more information about The Fabled Woods. Short facts first:

  • Release date & time: Thursday, March 25th 9am PDT/5pm CET
  • Price: $16.99/£13.99/€16,99 (including 15% discount for the first 7 days)
  • Ray Tracing: Full Nvidia DLSS and RTX support (Ray Traced Shadows, Ray Traced Reflections, RTXGI, Hybrid Translucency) included

Everyone of you who buys The Fabled Woods will also get two free DLCs with it. First is the games soundtrack including all 14 tracks composed by Luigi-Maria Rapisarda and Lukas Zepf:

Second is a downloadable PDF notebook. It reveals additional information about the back story and backgrounds of what is going on in the woods. So if you buy The Fabled Woods, please don't take a look inside before you made your way through the game! HEAVY SPOILER ALERT!

The Fabled Woods is a narrative short story. I designed the game the way that you can play through it in one run. It always breaks the immersion and atmosphere so much when you can't continue playing until the next day or even later. You can finish the game in 90-120 minutes. Of course, depending on how much you keep your eyes open in the world outside of the story.

So, that's it for now. See ya all after two excited, anxious and nervous days in the fabled woods!

All the best and take care!

The Fabled Woods launches with DLSS and Ray Tracing!

Greetings, explorer!

When I started to work on The Fabled Woods I had a bunch of main intentions: I wanted to tell players a deep and interesting short story, that can be experienced in one evening. The best immersion can be created when you are not removed from the game, right?

And I wanted to create the best-looking forest that I could as a single indie developer. The Unreal Engine is a very powerful tool for this and helped immensely in the progress of Ray Tracing. Over time (with support from Nicolas, Pumpkin Jack developer) the forest became a truly fabled place.

At about a year into development, my path crossed with Nvidia. From that came the question, "Would you be interested in adding Ray Tracing to The Fabled Woods?". Of course, I wanted to work with Ray Tracing and Nvidia! What else could I have said? Hey, after all, the question came directly from Nvidia. And I can't tell you how happy I was about it!

Before Nvidia had reached out, Ray Tracing and foliage was not possible. Unfortunately, I quickly came across the bad news on the internet: If you have a game with a lot of foliage, don't even think about including ray tracing. Even Nvidia at the time said to turn off Ray Tracing for foliage as the solution. I just thought: Damn! After all, what does a forest consist of?!? But I didn't want to give up. So: Challenge accepted!

And as The Fabled Woods has evolved over the past year, I continued to work on implementing Ray Tracing features and have been heavily tweaking everything with Nvidia over the past few months. I am damn proud of the results as you can see in the video here:

[previewyoutube][RTX video][/previewyoutube]
Our goal was to launch the first game that can handle Ray Tracing foliage with over 1 million instances and good performance. All the trees cast Ray Traced shadows and there are Ray Traced reflections in all the water you can find in the woods. Here is the complete list of features that I’ve implemented into The Fabled Woods:

  • Ray Traced Shadows
  • Ray Traced Reflections
  • RTXGI
  • Hybrid Translucency
  • DLSS
The Fabled Woods is also the second game worldwide on the market that uses RTX Global Illumination! In all the interiors you'll find in the game, Global Illumination comes into play and casts a nice, warm light with great shadows.

Many of you will now ask yourselves what this whole thing is about. Aren't these all just technical gimmicks without a deeper use? Not quite. This technology from Nvidia is allowing developers as small as one the ability to develop photo-realistic lighting, shadows, and reflections without a team behind them. This is a great step in the right direction for all indies wanting to create realistic worlds.

For me as a developer, the implementation was an exciting task, and to be quite honest: I LOVE how the game looks and feels with all settings on “epic” and Ray Tracing activated. I can reassure all of you out there who do not own a Ray Tracing capable graphics card: We have worked hard to make The Fabled Woods look as good as possible even without Ray Tracing enabled.

Well, what more to say? I am not a fan of advertising blah blah, but a huge "THANK YOU" to everyone over there at Nvidia. Without your help, The Fabled Woods wouldn’t look as beautiful as it does now. I’ve said this before: At the risk of repeating myself, I'm damn proud of what my little project finally turned into!

I love it! And I hope you will as well when it launches next Thursday, March 25th. I’ll see you all in the woods.

All the best and take care!

We have a launch date for The Fabled Woods - and a new demo as well!

Greetings, friend!

Some time has passed since we officially announced The Fabled Woods in June 2020. And since then there hasn't been too much new information either, that's unfortunately true. I vow to do better!

And do it right now! I have two pieces of good news for you this Monday:

  1. The Fabled Woods will launch on March 25th here on Steam!
  2. And there is a new demo available for a limited time of 7 days from now on!

As you might have noticed, the Steam page and also the game looks a bit different now. Honestly saying: Better! And not without reason: I've teamed up with Nicolas, the dev of Pumpkin Jack, to make The Fabled Woods the best looking virtual forest we could bring to your screen. And I am really happy with the result:

Speaking of the demo: The content included is basically the same you might already know from the previous demos - the beginning of the game. But there might be some changes and extensions made - but I really don't want to spoiler too much here! And please let me know your feedback - here on the Steam Community or on The Fabled Woods Discord!

Go ahead, venture into the forest and walk the path less traveled...

All the best and take care!

Steam Game Festival: Welcome to the Fabled Woods! 🏕️

Hello! I'm Joe, the creator of The Fabled Woods. I am a solo developer, I have been working on this game since January of 2019. I've been developing games for about 10 years now as a hobby and been playing them even longer. For quite some time I had the idea for a dark and mysterious narrative short story in my mind - and the result is what you see here on the Steam page.

The demo you can play this week shows off the 1st storyline you'll play through. I'm very happy to introduce you to this world and Larry. You'll learn that there seems to be more happening in the woods than what it seems at first. I hope you enjoy the demo! Please share your feedback on The Fabled Woods Discord channel.

I am currently finalising the game, followed by the polishing process to deliver you the best and most intense experience in The Fabled Woods possible. And I am really looking forward to see you all out there playing my game - I can't wait for the moment to push the "publish" button. Although, when I think about it, I get nervous already... 😅

See you all in the live stream tomorrow! Till then and take care everyone!
