Meet the creatures of the Silt demo

As part of Steam Next Fest, our demo is live and ready for you to play!

There’s still time to explore the dangerous waters of Silt, so if you haven’t already, here’s some of the creatures you’ll find weaving through the darkness in your playthrough.
Tunnel Snakes
Tip: If you start getting chased, you’ll want to kick those flippers and swim as fast as you can.
Blockhead
If you’re approached head on by one of these, there’s a pretty certain chance you won’t survive. But they are very handy at clearing paths, so it’s worth possessing these powerful critters.
Scissorfish
These snappy creatures can free you from some sticky situations. Small and feisty, you’ll find these piranha-type fish waiting to lend a hand throughout the demo.
Goliath
Approach with great caution. This hungry Goliath is waiting patiently in the dark, so keep your eyes peeled.
Play the demo before the 28th February

The inspiration behind Silt

Bizarre creatures, surreal surroundings, and a mysterious oceanic void… All elements that create a harrowing underwater adventure. But how did Silt come to be? Our 2D horror puzzler has been inspired by phobias, games, and even Beatrix Potter. Keep scrolling to find out more!

Fear of the deep

If you’ve ever experienced thalassophobia, there’s a chance you may find Silt’s oceanic abyss mildly terrifying. Our game artist, Tom Mead, channelled his fear of open water and deep underwater spaces to create an eerie and unnerving environment for the diver to explore.

Brilliant indie adventure titles

Notable games such as Limbo, Inside, Little Nightmares, and Samorost 3 played a big part in inspiring the Spiral Circus team to bring Tom’s artwork to life. These unique and atmospheric visuals reflect the creepy narratives of these games perfectly, which has influenced the creation of Silt from the very beginning.

Beatrix Potter

This may sound obscure, but the main influence of Tom’s art style is in fact Beatrix Potter. From being scarred as a child watching the animals dressed as humans prancing around, this fuelled the idea for many of Tom’s characters over the years.

Can you survive the void?

Silt is coming to Steam early 2022. To keep up to date with the latest announcements, and to find out more about the origin story of Silt, follow Spiral Circus on Twitter here. A peculiar adventure soon awaits...

How a 2D Surreal Artist Got Into Game Development - The Art & Process of Making Silt

The story of how Spiral Circus came to be might not be a unique one but it is an inspiration to all who one day wish to make their own game. Tom Mead will share the story of Silt’s development leading to signing with a publisher, and how an artist who never thought would make a video game had to learn the process.
