Devblog #8 - The Realmgate Wars - To Grow a God

Welcome to the eighth blog post for Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Tempestfall. In the first chapters, we will introduce you to the universe of Age of Sigmar, and how it all eventually came to Tempestfall.
THE REALMGATE WARS - TO GROW A GOD
Although the Hallowed Knights fulfilled their task of finding the Goddess of Life, Alarielle, it came at a great cost. The hidden pocket realm of Athelwyrd was invaded by legions of Nurgle’s followers, and in the brief but vicious battle, the Stormcast Eternals lost their Lord-Celestant Gardus Steel Soul. Weakened and outnumbered, the allied warriors of Sigmar and Sylvaneth led by Lady of Vines had no choice but to flee and seek respite. The hunters became the hunted.

The Sylvaneth knew the lands of Ghyran better than any fiend or daemon, and certain secret pathways helped the heroes outpace the wrath of Chaos. At least, most of it. But it was not a chasing warband that troubled and pained Alarielle. Her soul, unlike other gods, was almost bound to her realm - if the land withered, so did her powers. Seeing and experiencing Ghyran first-hand after centuries in hiding, feeling the suffering of infected life convinced the Goddess she had failed in her ultimate purpose. Both as a protector, and as a mother. Succumbing to gloom and depression, Alarielle began to wither, just like the tree branches all around them. Soon enough, she shrank and transformed into a fist-sized soul-pod, a seed bearing the essence of the goddess. Her “death” came as a mere continuation of the cycle of life, but the Lady of Vines had a plan for the next step - rebirth.

Alarielle’s soul-pod needed to be planted in the soil, however just like any new life taking roots in the ground, it would absorb everything around it. If they planted the goddess in a place tainted by Nurgle, they risked a cataclysmic event of an immense corrupted force serving Chaos. The Lady of Vines, a Sylvaneth Branchwraith and now protector of her goddess’ soul-pod, decided they have to reach a place called the Blackstone Summit. Back in the beginning of Age of Chaos, dozens of united Sylvaneth tribes stood as one against the onslaught of the Dark Gods. The heroes of this first war found their resting place atop a lonely hill, and the Lady of Vines anticipated their uplifting spirits and furious zeal against Chaos would allow Alarielle to be reborn, full of hope and might.

However, to reach the Blackstone Summit was a lengthy and difficult task. Although the Sylvaneth and Hallowed Knights could outpace the main army of Chaos, Nurgle’s Plague Lord, Torglug the Despised, was in pursuit with his warband.
Torglug used to be a defender of Ghyran, but with the Grand Alliance of Gods dismantling under the weight of the invasion, his soul was twisted and corrupted by Nurgle. Now, as a champion of Chaos, he knew the same secret pathways as the fleeing party, and he intended to claim the boon his god was after for hundreds of years.

Every step of the way, Torglug’s warband kept harassing and striking at the travelling group of Sylvaneth and Stormcast Eternals. Time after time, the rearguard staunchly repelled attacks, until the party reached the edge of the Forest of Druidia, and the shore of the Sea of Serpents. Just as they were about to be encircled by overwhelming slithering forces of Nurgle, the Realm of Life came to the defence of its goddess. One of the fabled living winters, Jotunberg, a gigantic animate mountain, used the last of its strength to move into the Sea and perish there, freezing the waters and allowing passage on foot. The great escape continued, as the chasing Chaos followers struck against the Hallowed Knights’ rearguard, fell into the Sea through the ice cracks, or were stopped in their tracks by lightning bolts carrying Knights Excelsior - a much needed help from ever-watchful Sigmar.

Days have passed in battle, bloodshed and acts of miraculous heroism, but the Lady of Vines and Hallowed Knights finally managed to reach the far shore of the Sea of Serpents. The Branchwraith led the survivors along the Path of the Purified, an enchanted and healing place that would remove any taint of Chaos from Alarielle’s soul-pod. Hope sparked in the hearts of the survivors, but upon reaching the Blackstone Summit, weapons of war were drawn immediately, yet again. Torglug the Despised, knowing the same pathways and aided by Chaos, was already waiting there with his soldiers.

A desperate and vicious battle ensued, as the weakened and decimated Hallowed Knights once again had to step into the fray. Shields, warhammers and swords were plunged into festering daemonic flesh, and with each fallen Stormcast Eternal, the tide of battle looked more grim. Torglug hacked his way through enemies toward the Lady of Vines, and eventually lunged toward the Branchwraith. His strikes were delivered with such fury he cut off her arm grasping Alarielle’s soul-pod, crushed her body, and dealt a finishing blow with his greataxe.

But in that moment, a flash of light blinded the fiends of Chaos. As if a meteor came down from the skies, a winged, armor-clad avenger smote a pocket of daemons, then darted to another place on the battlefield, striking and decimating again.
When Sigmar’s legendary warhammer Ghal-Maraz was reclaimed by Celestial Vindicators, the god-king knew he himself could not lead the charge in battle anymore. But, the purpose of a weapon is to wage war, and not just exist as some symbol of power. Thus was born the Celestant-Prime, an almost angelic Stormcast Eternal, wielding Sigmar’s legendary weapon and bringing defeat to the forces of Chaos wherever sent.

As Alarielle’s soul-pod (still held by the Branchwraith’s arm) tumbled down the battlefield, Torglug went after it, but the Celestant-Prime was vigilant. Darting toward the Plague Lord, the strike of Ghal-Maraz was so immense that the body of the champion of Chaos became separate from his soul. In that brief moment of separation, a lightning bolt carried Torglug’s soul to Azyr, while his festering, corrupted husk fell to the ground. A hero was about to be reforged and born again.

With the Plague Lord no longer in the picture, the remaining Hallowed Knights and Sylvaneth could kill the rest of Nurgle’s forces on the Blackstone Summit. Soon enough, the long-awaited moment of respite came, as the Stormcast Eternals planted Alarielle’s soul-pod into the ground. Now, the only thing left was to wait.

But this was merely a droplet in the ocean of war that raged in other Realms.

Devblog #7 - The Realmgate Wars - Goddess of Life

Welcome to the seventh blog post for Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Tempestfall. In the first chapters, we will introduce you to the universe of Age of Sigmar, and how it all eventually came to Tempestfall.
THE REALMGATE WARS - GODDESS OF LIFE
Back in Ghyran, the Realm of Life, the Stormcast Eternals could not rest after destroying the Gate of Dawn. Even though Gardus Steel Soul managed to trick the Great Unclean One Bolathrax into crushing the Realmgate with its massive body, there was no familiar after-battle silence. Instead, there was a distant, maddening bray.

The Sylvaneth - who had helped the Hallowed Knights defeat Nurgle’s forces at the Gate of Dawn - quickly scattered and looked for a shelter that could protect them from the terrible, piercing sound. The Stormcast Eternals, although incredibly powerful, were also affected by feeling… despair, gloom. They were nigh invincible warriors of Sigmar, and yet this powerful bray kept reminding them of their frail humanity and mortal emotions.
Only one thing could produce such effects. A colossal Chaos artifact of Nurgle, called the Dirgehorn, has been erected somewhere many miles away. Its sound projected at a massive distance, no regular being could withstand the power. With direct orders of retaking all the Realmgates in Ghyran, as well as finding the goddess of life, the Hallowed Knights had an incredibly long, perilous, and miserable journey ahead of them. They needed the aid of Sylvaneth, and destroying the Dirgehorn became a task of paramount importance.

Every waking hour, the Stormcast Eternals marched forward. Not only did they have to overcome their human weaknesses, they had to fight the new inhabitants of Ghyran. Cultists, plaguebearers, beastmen, bloatflies - every living thing serving Nurgle crossed the path of advancing Hallowed Knights, and each time, even though utterly demoralized, the Stormcast Eternals raised their weapons and pushed back the harassing forces. Facing challenges and trials day by day, they finally managed to approach the Dirgehorn. No rest for the weary - the defending forces of Chaos had to be decimated, although this time the Hallowed Knights fought with unseen rage and fury, desperate to destroy the damned artifact and end this miserable mission. Their hatred has grown so massive, a Decimator-Prime hurled his greataxe with such strength that it struck a Beastman and still kept going, until it smashed the Dirgehorn in the end.

Sweet, merciful silence has finally fallen on the Realm of Life. Although rotten swamps still popped bubbles and insects buzzed overhead, the minds of those affected by the Dirgehorn were no longer pained and tortured. The Sylvaneth began to emerge from their hiding, and filled with a renewed desire for vengeance, they knew the next objective immediately. The rat-men of Clan Pestilens took over the Glade of Horned Growths, producing deadly, toxic fumes that the wind carried all over Ghyran, killing everything in its path.

Wasting no time, the Sylvaneth mounted an assault on the Glade. With the aid of Treelords, their offensive was fierce and decisive - the Skaven forces were dwindling with each strike, however the rat-men believed to hold an ace up their sleeve. In the middle of Glade of Horned Growths stood a corrupted Realmgate, unassailed by the busy Sylvaneth. A single, frail Grey Seer fell to his knees in front of it, and began to pray. The loyal servant of Nurgle pleaded for help against the deadly attacking force, pleaded for daemonic aid, and the Chaos god seemingly responded. The Grey Seer became filled with hope and pride, as the Realmgate began to hum and tremble. But, out of it came no daemon or Chaos worshipper. It was only Gardus Steel Soul, the Lord-Celestant of Hallowed Knights, who survived long days of being chased by the Great Unclean One, Bolathrax, in Nurgle’s Chaos Realm.

Covered in all sorts of festering, putrid essence, utterly exhausted, but alive, Gardus appeared in the middle of Sylvaneth assault on the Glade of Horned Growths. No rest for the weary, yet again - with no other choice, he raised his sword and rushed into battle.
Dryads, Treelords, and other Sylvaneth perished in great numbers, but the servants of Nurgle were finally pushed back from the Glade. Once the dust settled, and the enemy remnants stopped breathing, Gardus approached the Lady of the Vines - the commander of this Sylvaneth force. He had a prophetic vision and learned where Alarielle, the long lost Goddess of Life, resides. At the time they did not realize they were being spied on, as a Skaven Verminlord Corruptor lurked in the shadows, ready to follow.

Ghyran, as many other Realms, contained hidden pocket dimensions with one entrance. Supposedly, Alarielle was hiding in one of them, called Athelwyrd - it was also the source of a pure, revitalizing river running through the Realm of Life. There was one problem, however. One of the biggest Great Unclean Ones, if not the most powerful, was tasked by Chaos to continuously spoil and corrupt the river with its entrails and feces. Even though everything that touched the water would become healed and cleansed, it could not withstand a never-ending stream of putrid, rotting essence. A great deal of time and toil passed, as the Stormcast Eternals attempted to dislodge the giant from the riverbed, but with the combined strength of both armies, eventually the danger was disposed of.

With the great daemon out of the way, the Hallowed Knights were finally able to enter the hidden pocket dimensions of Athelwyrd. To their dismay, as soon as they stepped in, a host of Sylvaneth came down on them and struck brutally - the personal guard of Alarielle did not expect any visitors, and simply protected their Queen. This short skirmish came to end as soon as the Goddess of Life herself appeared and ordered everyone to stop fighting. Furious at the Stormcast Eternals for revealing her hiding domain, she made everyone realize they were followed.

The greatest Chaos army the warriors of Sigmar had ever seen was quickly approaching their positions, and so the Hallowed Knights and Sylvaneth prepared for battle. Bolathrax, Clan Pestilens, Beastmen, Plaguebearers and other warriors of Nurgle were ready to feast - they were searching for her for hundreds of years, and now Alarielle stands before them.
Sigmarite armors and weapons clashed once more with festering armaments of Plaguebearers. Gardus Steel Soul, wanting to protect the Goddess of Life, lunged at his arch-nemesis Bolathrax. The Great Unclean One brushed off Lord-Celestant’s strikes, broke his limbs as if they were sticks, and before being devoured, Gardus was struck by another Stormcast Eternal’s crossbow shot. In a flash of lightning, he disappeared back to Azyr. Seeing this, Alarielle came before Bolathrax, and absolutely destroyed the daemon with a single spell, a single motion - such is the power of a god. Due to this however, she lost her focus, and Athelwyrd began to flood with the revitalizing river’s waters, splitting the battlefield in half. The forces of Order and the forces of Chaos were now separated, but one thing was certain - Athelwyrd was lost.

Devblog #6 - The Realmgate Wars - Quest for Ghal Maraz

Welcome to the sixth blog post for Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Tempestfall. In the first chapters, we will introduce you to the universe of Age of Sigmar, and how it all eventually came to Tempestfall.
THE REALMGATE WARS - QUEST FOR GHAL MARAZ
Reforged in Azyr, the Celestial Vindicators descend once more upon the Realm of Metal, this time with explicit orders to reclaim Sigmar’s legendary weapon - the Ghal Maraz skull-splitter, lost during the God-King’s duel with Archaon the Everchosen hundreds of years ago. Accompanied by a smaller detachment of Hammers of Sigmar led by Lord-Celestant Vandus Hammerhand - the conqueror of Brimstone Peninsula - the Stormcast Eternals intend to breach Ephryx’s enchanted fortress from a different side.

Not wanting to suffer massive casualties in a frontal assault again, the Celestial Vindicators intend to approach Ephryx’s fortress from the adjacent city of Steelmarch. This posed a logistical and positional issue, as the warriors of Sigmar were too many to safely walk through the narrow streets and alleyways. Retinue by retinue, the Stormcast Eternals entered the city, hearing strange whispers as if in unison.
Soon enough, the warriors realize they’ve walked into a trap set by Ephryx’s army. From the rooftops and corridors, from all sides, the armored fiends and bare-chested madmen worshipping Tzeentch came down on Celestial Vindicators and Hammers of Sigmar. Without their disciplined ranks and formations a chaotic skirmish ensued, but before any side suffered major casualties, a deafening shriek made both armies pause. In an instant, spectres and wraiths poured out of the buildings and cracked streets, and began slaughtering Chaos worshippers and Stormcast Eternals alike.

Lord-Relictor of Hammers of Sigmar, Ionus Cryptborn, sensed the wrath of the ghosts was misdirected. He attempted to communicate with what seemed to be their leader, a banshee Swordmaiden, Celemnis. Although they cannot speak in the humanly fashion, the banshees realized who were the ones that made them angered spirits many years ago in the first place, and promptly turned all their blades against the Chaos army. However, as some of Ephryx’s underlings managed to take away Celemnis’ keen blades, she appeared in the center of the battlefield and let out a decimating banshee scream in fury, killing every living creature in sight. The city square was now uncontested, and Vandus Hammerhand ordered the Hammers of Sigmar to march forward, before falling to his knees. In a prophetic vision, he saw a still, frozen river of silver, and massive drakes battling in the void.

With the Celestial Vindicators righteously finishing off any remnants of Chaos followers, the city was secured. The Stormcast Eternals advanced and reached the edge of the city, but to their disbelief, the Ephryx’s eldritch fortress had disappeared, leaving only a gaping crater behind. The blast from Ghal Maraz the Chaos sorcerer used to end the initial siege in Realm of Metal had also teleported the structure entirely to a different place. Ionus Cryptborn turned to Celemnis and asked where did the stronghold go, and she pointed upward - to the uppermost floating isle of Chamon, the Great Crucible, where the river of silver poured down on the rest of the Realm.

The banshee then led the Stormcast Eternals to the Dragonfate Dais, a runic circle meant to communicate with gods. Vandus Hammerhand’s prophetic vision made the solution clear. A godbeast dragon named Argentine melted the silver in Chamon with its fiery breath, keeping it in a fluid state. The Stormcast Eternals made contact with Dracothion, the god stardrake who first found and awakened Sigmar back in the universe’s Genesis, and asked him for aid - to distract Argentine. When its fire ceased heating up the Great Crucible, the silver river solidified, and Hammers of Sigmar along with Celestial Vindicators were now able to climb the colossal, still waterfall. Once they reach the top, they are met by a Chaos army, confident that the river of metal would wash away any invaders. At that point Argentine had returned to its place, and the silver began to become malleable and liquid again. The Stormcast Eternals managed to overpower the meeting forces of Tzeentch who underestimated their adversaries, and made their way throughout the fortifications, until they finally reached the eldritch fortress.

It was there where the warriors of Sigmar would meet their biggest challenge yet. The Chaos sorcerer Ephryx did not sit idly by - to protect his prized artifact he hired a private army composed of seasoned Slaves to Darkness, he found and convinced Korghos Khul (the arch-nemesis of Vandus Hammerhand) to join him, and additionally summoned Kairos Fateweaver, one of the greatest daemon lords of Tzeentch.

Kairos Fateweaver, © Games Workshop Limited

The magnitude of the battle that commenced was truly massive. Sigmarite weapons clashed with spiked armaments of Chaos warriors, as Korghos Khul rushed from the center chamber accompanied by the Khorne Bloodbound. Down that chamber, the warriors of Sigmar could see Ghal Maraz, protected by a nigh-invincible force of nine Lords of Change, with the emissary of Tzeentch, Kairos Fateweaver himself among them. Knowing that conventional battle would surely result in utter defeat, the Hammers of Sigmar and Celestial Vindicators formed a spearhead toward the legendary warhammer. With all sorts of magic blasts and relentless strikes coming at them from all sides, they began to crumble, but Vandus Hammerhand managed to reach and grab Ghal Maraz. Then, a giant white comet came down on them from the sky, and with the impact, the Stormcast Eternals disappeared in flashes of lightning.

The ever-vigilant Sigmar, watching from Azyr, wanted to ensure the safe return of his warriors, and sent a killing force toward the battlefield. Now, with Ghal Maraz returned to his hands, a devastating blow was dealt to the forces of Chaos in the Realm of Metal. Without this power source, Ephryx’s plot to turn all the Realmgates toward the realm of Tzeentch was thwarted. But, with Vandus Hammerhand’s second death and reforging, everyone would soon become aware of the toll it takes on one’s mind.

Devblog #5 - The Realmgate Wars - Realm of Metal

Welcome to the fifth blog post for Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Tempestfall. In the first few chapters, we will introduce you to the universe of Age of Sigmar, and how it all eventually came to Tempestfall.
THE REALMGATE WARS - REALM OF METAL
With the Hammers of Sigmar retaking Brimstone Peninsula in the Realm of Fire, and the Hallowed Knights battling forces of Nurgle in Ghyran, the Celestial Vindicators enter the lands of Chamon - the Realm of Metal.

Chamon is characterized by a strange desolate landscape with twisted metal formations and scattered essence of pure energy, where transmutation and change is natural law. Sigmar dispatched the Celestial Vindicators to the realm controlled by forces of Chaos god of Deceit, Tzeentch, with the aim of retaking the Realmgate called Silverway, as well as finding Grungni - the allied Dwarven god, lost during the initial wars against Chaos.

When the Celestial Vindicators led by Lord-Celestant Thostos Bladestorm descended in Chamon, they were met by silence. Initial scouting and reconnaissance revealed the area was empty, with nothing but remnants of civilization scattered around. The Stormcast Eternals reached the Silverway Realmgate without opposition, but soon it became clear they were not alone.

A massive Chaos warband led by a Tzeentch Sorcerer called Ephryx quickly approached the ranks of Celestial Vindicators, and a fierce battle ensued. With the full strength of their Stormhost, the Stormcast Eternals managed to repel the assaulting forces, and came to a realization - they are being watched and hunted. For Ephryx, granted the prophetic knowledge of the all-seeing third eye, the coming of warriors of Sigmar was a blessing in disguise. When Stormcast Eternals were defeated in battle, their souls were transferred back to Azyr to be reforged again. However, if one could find a way to trap their life essence, it could be transformed into pure energy - something that the Chaos sorcerer desperately needed to corrupt all of the Realmgates in the Realm of Metal, in a single magic ritual.

Knowing that idleness will most likely end in their demise, Lord-Celestant Thostos Bladestorm ordered the Celestial Vindicators to chase after the retreating Chaos warband. Eventually, they came across a huge fortress made of different kinds of warped metal and skulls of unidentified material, giving off a mysterious, ominous feeling. Fearlessly, the Stormcast Eternals began their siege, concentrating their entire Stormhost, and soon the defending forces of Chaos poured out to meet them. Mutated fiends of Tzeentch and dark, eldritch magic clashed with the Sigmarite weapons and armor of Celestial Vindicators, each side determined to eradicate the other. To the dismay of Lord-Celestant Thostos, his fallen comrades’ souls were not returning to Azyr, but disappeared consumed by the enchanted walls of the cursed metal fortress.

The Changehost of Tzeentch, Igor Sid, © Games Workshop Limited

The battle, however, was not going according to the Chaos sorcerer’s plan. The Stormcast Eternals proved to be a much more formidable force than anticipated, and with each slain fiend of Tzeentch they crept closer to victory. Seeing no other way to avert defeat, Ephryx unleashed the power contained within the fortress. In a blinding flash of white light the Celestial Vindicators found themselves back in Azyr.

Sigmar called Lord-Celestant Thostos to report on his mission to the Realm of Metal. According to the Stormcast Eternal, the fierce battle and their lives ended with a flash of light - but it was a force unlike any other, not dark and corrupted, but good and pure.
The God-King smiled, knowing that the Celestial Vindicators have found Ghal-Maraz - the legendary warhammer Sigmar had lost during his duel with Archaon the Everchosen long ago.
