Gameplay tips : learn how to combo !

From the first seconds in Ragnaröck, you immediately understand that you have to hit the drums to break the runes that come towards you in sync with the music. But what is not immediately obvious, is that a secondary mechanic allows you to increase your score and overtake your opponents: the use of streak bonuses, or "combos".

If you manage to hit rune after rune without going wrong, a combo gradually loads up along the handle of your hammers. When this gauge is full, the combo bonus becomes usable. Yes, when your hammers have a fully charged combo, you can strike on one of the shields at your side to send all that accumulated energy to your rowers and get a speed boost of a few seconds!
Tip #1
That’s not all! If you don't use your bonus right away, and continue to hit flawlessly, the combo will continue to charge a second gauge, this time on the hammerhead, until it reaches a second bonus level! The bonus generated when you reach this second step is four times more powerful and will give you a much greater speed boost!
Tip #2
A perfect hit on a rune (perfectly in the middle of the drum, so perfectly in sync with the music) is symbolized by golden lightning bolts on the drum when crushing the rune. You should know that perfect hits load your combo twice as fast as a regular hit!
Tip #3
Be careful, any mishit will drop the combo down to zero, and make you lose the bonus obtained if there was one. You will therefore have to calculate the risks and your chances of success!
For example, before a complicated series of notes, will you take the risk of continuing to increase your combo to level 2, or would you rather secure the level 1 bonus by using it right away?

What will be your strategy to optimize your score and overtake your opponents in the viking ship race?

About the core gameplay
Vikings, and big epic music
In Ragnaröck, you play as a Viking ship captain determined to lead their crew to victory against their rivals. To finish the race in front of the others, you must motivate your rowers to give all their strength to move your boat forward. And all that, to the rhythm of epic music playing (here and here)!
Core gameplay
Since you are the leader of your boat, it's up to you to set the pace! You are equipped with hammers, ready to be struck with drive on the drums in front of you. The challenge ? Follow the rhythm of the luminous runes coming in! Achieving this throughout the song is the key to ensure unwavering support from your crew.

Crushing the runes on your drums with your hammers is good, but doing it perfectly in sync is better! The more precise you are, the faster your ship will move. Only your final score, representing the distance covered over the duration of the song, will be proof of your success.
Varied difficulty levels for more fun and challenge
Each track will have you playing different combinations and rhythms, as well as several levels of difficulty. The hardest ones may even make you lose your mind ... and your arms! And yet, you won't have the right to make mistakes, or you will risk losing your crew... and all of your speed.

Ragnaröck and Gloryhammer: an awesome partnership!

The whole team is very proud to announce a partnership with Gloryhammer! Because on top of great music to listen to, this partnership guarantees epic viking races coming up!

What does it mean? We will be able to smash our hammers in sync with the amazing beats of Gloryhammer, starting with the very dynamic track “Hootsforce”, that many of you probably heard already!

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]

Gloryhammer is this crazy group that successfully navigates in a happy mix of genres! Gloryhammer is the guarantee of fun without the fuss: perfect pieces to have fun!

What we like about this band is also the proximity to other partner metal bands : Zargothrax (Christopher Bowes, on keyboards) is also a pirate captain for Alestorm in another universe, and you will soon hear Angus McFife (Thomas Winkler) in Ragnaröck again as he's taking Odin's duties as a carpenter god in another band...can you guess wich one ?

Songs good to listen to, terrific to play!

This style of music, the interdimensional space metal, is also a fertile ground for visual evolutions of atmosphere possible for the future! And then ... they have a huuuuuuuge hammer!

Get you wrists and drums ready, this track will be available in the original lineup as soon as the Early Access starts. YEAH! And it’s happening very soon!

Art direction : about our work

In this article, we will detail our artistic approach regarding the environment that players will discover in Ragnaröck. It’s our art director for the Ragnaröck project, Suzanne, who talks about it best. First of all, let's take a quick look at her daily work :

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]
Low Poly: an assumed graphic style
We decided to work on a style called “Low Poly”, both raw and pleasant, which we could, by shortcut, associate with a “cartoon” style.

This style is accessible and inviting. It insists on the “all ages” and playful side. It also allows you to distance yourself from reality. The representation is minimalist and simplified as much as possible, which helps bring clarity to the reading of a scene.
Thematic coherence and artistic impact
In Ragnaröck, we are situated in the Nordic and mythological universe, and we want players to be able to make this universe their own.

The evolution of the scenery as the game progresses tells an epic story. Several mythological elements are thus embedded in the first map of the game, such as gigantic monster skeletons, or Yggdrasil, the tree of nine worlds. The more the players fight to improve their score, the more they advance, and the more they reveal the universe.

In this first map, the blue and purple colors were chosen to refer to the land of the cold, Niflheim. In contrast, the houses and everything that refers to the Viking world have warm colors: orange, red, brown (complementary color to blue).
Our way of working
The key concept is to set the general mood and the colors, and give the general direction to take.

Here, for example, we want players to start from a familiar landscape: the Viking village lost in a fjord, dominated by an austere environment. Subsequently, players discover several atmospheres, dominated by different luminosities.
Further work
We work on many elements of the game with this careful methodology, in order to respect a graphic and thematic consistency. Today we broached the subject of the environment, but we can also mention the characters, objects, gameplay elements… All these elements are currently being worked on, and will be visible when the game is released in Early Access, very soon.
