NEW NUTRIENT SYSTEM & EXCLUSIVE LIMITED-TIME HOLIDAY STORE - GAME'S ON SALE TOO

Hello everyone! Please raise your fins for the first major update since launch. We’ve got an entirely new food & nutrition system, as well as a whole bunch of other additions and improvements.

This trailer came to me in a fever dream:

ALSO, for the duration of the Steam Winter Sale Only, 60 festive pieces of holiday hardscape can be found in the special Winter Market. Fill festive aquariums with baubles, lights, dreidels and more. You can keep them forever if you find them and save them in a tank, but after Jan 4 they can no longer be collected!

This trailer came to me when I had 4 hours to make a trailer:

Silliness aside!

The nutrition system adds a deep new layer to tank dynamics and interaction. Some species will go bonkers for certain foods but don’t care about others. Fish will hog their faves and you’ll have to be more diligent to make sure everyone gets the right variety of snacks. You can get an idea of what a fish likes by hovering over the “i” in their details in the Your Fish (or Store Fish) panel. Fish will find themselves on a matrix of grazing, opportunist and predacious; and herbivorous, omnivorous and carnivorous.

Dead fish also become food! Failures are now edible! Unless they were sick, in which case the scavengers will inherit their illness.

There are 10 new food types (11 total, so maybe 11 new food types since the only type before was “food”?).

PLEASE NOTE: Nutrition system updates will only apply to NEW fish; existing tank inhabitants do not inherit the new behaviors.

But that’s not all! We’ve made a few other major improvements. Fish pathfinding is way better, so fish are smarter. They also fit into caves better.

We also got transparency working for prettier fish:

And we’ve ADDED METRIC, BABY!

But even that's not all! View the full list below:

ADDED - Nutrition System for Fish. Food chasing is now connected to Hunger, Nutrition Type, Eating Style, Line of Sight, and Water Column. This has the effect of slowing down fish food chasing when not hungry or poor food match, while also helping fish spread out and not all choose the same food piece.
ADDED - 11 new types of food that meet Fish Nutritional and Eating Style needs.
ADDED - Eating a fish will transfer its Illness stat to the predator, poisoning it.
ADDED - Decaying Fish now attract Carnivores and Omnivores.
ADDED - Winter Market Shop with over 60 types of themed hardscape to collect and an assortment of our colder water fish. This is a timed event and will close for the season on January 4th.
ADDED - Fish Transparency
ADDED - Dramatically Improved Fish Pathfinding
ADDED - Suction to Gravel Vacuum tool that messes with fish and can suck up food.
ADDED - Metric Settings Options

CHANGED - Hardscape in Store Tanks should be less likely to hover in space.
CHANGED - Store Tanks can now spawn Large Hardscape pieces.
CHANGED - Fish are more likely to stay in their Water Column position when not doing something specifically outside of it.
CHANGED - Context Hints now have black backgrounds for legibility (“Examine”, “Grab”, etc.).
CHANGED - Made leaf wiggles more apparent when small fish bump into them.

FIXED - Fish can now hide in caves closer to their body size.
FIXED - Scaling issue with tank base/glass that would become apparent in large tanks.
FIXED - Food now pauses with game correctly.
FIXED - Many small UI bugs, fish and hardscape dragging quirks, and odd plant/hardscape interactions. Things should feel more stable to interact with.
FIXED - Hardscape can now be placed much higher than before.
FIXED - Plant duplication bug from dragging a plant around and then clicking on an empty inventory slot. Duplicated plants will eventually get destroyed by the system, leading to “where did my plant go?” problems.
FIXED - Hardscape pieces should now all have appropriate Names and Description text.

UPDATE DEC 7 2023 - MORE FISH! MORE HARDSCAPE!

Hello all! Exciting update; we've got 18 new fish fresh out of the paint shop. As to not spoil them, I spent way, way too long on a terrible photoshop collage. See what you can guess!

Hardscape we won't be secretive about (too excited). We have a beautiful new red wooden bridge, a sunken submarine, and a castle (two different colours of roof) and some awesome Roman ruins (one-shot cave for fish to hide in)! Thanks to our 3D modeler Josh on his incredible work on these.

Thanks for swimmin by! More to come!

UPDATE NOV 28 2023 - Better Lighting & Bye Bye to VRAM Crashes.

Hello all! We've got a nice update here for you. Increased stability, more bugs squashed (except the fish squashing bug... people seem to be enjoying that one).

ADDED - Faked Global Illumination. Light should now appear to bounce off the substrate, subtly providing an under-lit effect depending on the color of the substrate and brightness of the light. In short, tanks should look prettier and more realistically lit. Big thanks to Mark Laprairie (Hot Lava Creator) on the suggestion and how to approach this!

ADDED - Option to control bubble aquantity. They do represent game chemistry, but they're not making everyone feel, ahem, bubbly.

ADDED - Option to disable auto-zoom when examining fish.

ADDED - Purple Sand substrate option because someone asked for it during our fishwiki stream and it took 2 seconds to add. Ooooh!

CHANGED - Floating plants now always have full 02 and CO2, since they are in contact with the air.
CHANGED - Camera Zoom should be easier to navigate larger tanks, particularly at the edges.

FIXED - BIG ONE! Greatly improved Texture Memory (VRAM) throughout the game. This should fix a bug that prevented some players from opening their game after several hours of play, allow lower-end graphics cards to play the game, and allow the game to use better textures for all players who are opting to have more crowded tanks.
FIXED - BIG ONE! Plants duplicating themselves on load. No more out of control "growth". Plants should also load in their correct positions as a result!
FIXED - Bug that slowly lowered tank light over time.
FIXED - ZOMBIE FISH. Fish could revive after dying, even after being eaten.
FIXED - Glass Backgrounds duplicating.
FIXED - Typos throughout the game.

We're still in post-launch cleanup mode, but will have bigger & more exciting updates for you soon!

No Death Mode & Steam Link! Put aquariums on any display.

Hello everyone!

Video directions here.

Text lovers, read on:

One of the biggest requests we get is for a Passive Mode, where you can build a tank and let it play on a secondary monitor without worrying about actually managing it.

Good news! It’s still in betta (if you're tired of this joke... sorry I'm not stopping) but it’s already in the game!

To make it so that fish don’t die go to settings and toggle No Death Mode.

If you want the game on a different monitor, simply hit F11 to toggle Windowed mode and move it to the monitor of your choosing. You can also toggle windowed mode from the Settings in the Home Screen.

To take things to the next level, stream the game to any smart TV or display with Chromecast (or equivalent) via Steam Link. Install the Steam Link app on your smart display, log in, follow the (dead easy) directions and wham, you’ve got an aquarium wherever you want!

PRO STRATS

Earn enough XP to unlock custom tank sizes and make a tank with the same dimensions of your display for true-to-life sized fish & plants!

Arrange your camera to the center so that the tank face aligns with the face of the aquarium and voila, you have a virtual tank on your TV for your cat to enjoy.
