Militsioner DevLog #5 - Town Windows

Hi, this is TallBoys

Today we want to share with you our progress on town folk, from idea and concept art to how they look in the game.
We wanted to make the town streets feel ghostly, but still inhabited. So we decided to make people appear through windows. Closed from the world outside, but constantly spying on you.
The Town is constantly watching. If you piss them off, they are gonna threaten you with the police. But remember, they hate you as much as they hate the giant.

Militsioner DevLog #4 - The Law Has a New Face

Hi, this is TallBoys, developers of the game Militsioner. In this post we will explain how the development has progressed, Militsioner’s new appearance and his emoitional states.

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]

We developed a series of portraits, describing the emotional states of the Giant.
He’s deeply vulnerable. The Law has a sensitive heart, so don't fuck with it.

He adores gifts and attention. For a friend, he can turn a blind eye to some wrongdoings. The Law has a loving heart, so find the key to it.

There's only so much a man can work without a break. Even a giant can be a little grumpy, if someone wakes him up. He has a nervous profession, a good night’s sleep is a necessity, or he’ll fall asleep during the day. The Law has a weary heart, so let it rest.

Nobody likes the police. It’s alienating. The Law has a lonely heart, so don’t break it.

Because of his size, the Giant fears thunder. The Law has a brave heart, just don’t put it to the test.

We’ve been working hard for the last few months to renovate the Militsioner’s look. Alongside with his fresh appearance, we're launching a Patreon page.
We wanted to show something substantial before asking for your support. We cannot go alone on this journey. Let’s make Militsioner together.

Militsioner DevLog #3 - Dialogue with the policeman, trains and city views

Hi, this is TallBoys, developers of the game Militsioner. In this post we will explain how the development has progressed.

Now, we are working out the technical part of the dialogue system. For example, here we show various reactions to your replies.

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]

Most of the game will be focused around the points of escape. So we continue to add and refine various train and station features.

Militsioner DevLog#2: Dating-Sim where instead of romance, you could go to jail

Hi, this is TallBoys, developers of the game Militsioner. In the trailer we showed a bit of the Giant’s suspicion system. It’s like a dating simulator where instead of romance, you could go to jail.
The player’s actions can be assessed by the Militsioner as either positive or negative. If his suspicion grows, he can catch and put the player in jail at any moment.

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]

We wanted to avoid classical UI to gain more immersion. In most dating sim games, the character’s relationship to you is shown through the expression on their faces. We tried to use different versions of 2d UI, but it made the game feel less immersive. So we decided to project the face with the emotion of the Militsioner directly onto the screen. It conveys a sense of paranoia when you know someone’s looking at you from the outside, even if you can’t see it directly.

We’re also working on a system of day and night cycle:

Talking with Militsioner #1 - February 2021

Hi, this is TallBoys, the developers of Militsioner game. In this post we’ll talk about the development process of the game and our future plans. We also have a two-minute trailer, showing how the gameplay of Militsioner will feel.

2 minutes of Militsioner:
[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]

Right now we’re working on a playable demo. For us, the most ambitious and complex of mechanics is the voice input that was shown in the trailer. We came up with this idea, trying to find interesting and fresh kinds of interaction with the policeman.

Physical interaction alone is not enough to fully show the profession of "policeman". He can’t keep catching you all the time, so most of your interactions with him must be between the action. It must be some sort of communication with him. Knowing that it would be an important part of gameplay, we tried to find a fresh perspective on interactive communication

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]

Voice input feels very natural to use, and it can be interesting to play with in the game world: What if you shout at night? If you shout to the car driver? or ask him for help? Maybe try to trick someone? There may be a number of interesting applications here that we have never seen before in any other game.

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]

In order for the policeman and the environment to understand the player correctly, we are working on a system that will correctly process the player’s responses based on the context. It is important that it does not make stupid mistakes or create obstacles, as the answers will influence the mood and attitude of the Militsioner towards the player. Similar systems were used in Facade and Phasmophobia.

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]To convince the player of the convenience of this system is the next important problem after the demo. Logically, this is the most understandable input system, but the problem may be in perception: the player is uncomfortable talking to non human objects.

In addition, we’re looking at different voice recognition systems. For example, we’re now integrating the system from Microsoft, which is used in Cortana. Of course, a lot of testing and possibly alternative input will be required, but the priority will be on the system that’ll show itself best in a game.

We also had some interesting news, we collected them here:
  • We were featured in Edge magazine. We were interviewed by Jen Simpkins (former editor of Edge) about the game’s ideas
  • Polygon magazine prepared material (Patricia Hernandez, senior editor at Polygon) about the game , where we also commented on the development
  • Russian Federal Channel has noticed the game and they don’t seem to like our game very much. Anyway, it looks funny
  • This is an interesting interview for Afisha magazine. We talked about the game’s design and little bit about our background. Also we talked to DTF about the game’s development (both interviews are in Russian)
  • Last but not least, а very cool article prepared by Vlad Alex (Merzmensch), in which he made a detailed analysis of the game and very precisely defined the topics we address
