Expect the Unexpected #02 - Show must go on

Welcome back to the Expect the Unexpected series! If you have missed the first episode, covering aiming, dash, and likes mechanics, you can read it to get the basics of survival in The Crackpet Show.

Now we assume you're ready to survive the first episode, so it might be helpful to know what happens next, don't you think?
Randomized episodes
Finishing a season of TCS is not anything like bingeing your favorite Netflix show. But imagine how awesome it would be to have an episode with a slightly different outcome each time? Not only do you get that in our bizarre show, but each time you start a new episode, a randomized grid of multiple paths with different kinds of rooms is generated.

So here comes the strategic part. Will you risk going through an elite version of the room for a chance to acquire a deadly weapon or play it safe to gain more likes and exchange them for some lethal tools?

There isn't one best way to approach it - it all depends on your favorite playstyle, current weapon, set of active perks, and whether you play solo or in co-op. But having all these tools means that you can adapt the events to your liking. The one thing stays the same. Yeah, you guessed it - the boss. Your ultimate verification of being ready for the next episode of the show.
The animals you’re going to dislike
And speaking of bosses. Which animal is your least favorite? Mole? Cockroach? Toad? Well, that list might grow after taking part in The Crackpet Show. Their health bar is long, their skills upgraded, and they will throw thousands of bullets at you.

The good old strategy of learning boss moves is the key here, but you also need to prepare for an even more deadly second phase after their health bar is depleted by half. So again, the best strategy is to use the room's covers and be on the move. It's also wise to save your special items for this occasion and just use all you've got.
Finishing an episode
So, you successfully avoided all the bullets and managed to survive two phases of deadly attacks? Hooray! Now you can see the summary of your run. All stats like the number of enemies killed, the number of likes left, a fight with a boss, and mini-bosses result in your fame boost!

The fame points are used to get the support of sponsors - which we are going to cover in one of the future episodes. But, in a glimpse, they are passive bonuses that stay with you on each run.

So, what is the difference between life and death? Not going to run a philosophy dispute here because, in The Crackpet Show, things work very clearly in this regard - apart from MORE FAMEEEE, you also unlock the next episode. But whether you repeat the same run or go for the next one, the rest of the rules apply.

Let's play a small yes-no mini-game about what you keep and what you don't:
 • Weapons - No
 • Likes - No
 • Perks - No
 • Sponsors - Yes
 • Perk upgrades - Yes
 • Weapon upgrades - Yes
 • Special items upgrades - Yes

Yes, you heard that right. If you thought, "I'll just stick to my favorite weapon." or "Will save likes for later." or "This perk might be handy in the long run." - this is not going to work. The Crackpet Show demands a good strategy here and now, based on the available tools. But going out of your comfort zone can help you discover more playstyles, more awesome perks, and weapons combinations - a true highlight of the show!
Coming up next…
In the next episode of "Expect the Unexpected", we will cover different weapons, special items, and ways to upgrade them. Stay tuned!

Expect the Unexpected #01 - Welcome to the show!

Expect the Unexpected #01 - Welcome to the show Aiming, dash & likes mechanic

Welcome! The Expect the Unexpected series brings you insights into the upcoming most bizarre TV Show! First, you need to know that things in here… well, work differently than in real life (thank God!).

In the upcoming six episodes, we will explain to you all the nitty-gritty of The Crackpet Show. Let's start today with the basics you need to understand to survive even the first episode.

Aiming - risk and reward
Let's get straight to the point - you can't shoot and run fast at the same time. But believe us, it is not a huge deal! We've designed it as a part of the risk and reward system, a core of our game. Being effective means that you are on the edge of getting hit, but you still manage to finish firing just a split second before receiving a bullet.

Speaking of bullets, this game is. Well... a bullet-hell, so you need to constantly look at your enemies' projectiles and keep avoiding them. Aiming your gun at the same time would be backbreaking, so you don't need to bother about it - your beastie takes care of it by itself. Just make sure that your enemy is within the weapon's range.

Dash, dash, dash
Remember the song "I'm still standing"? If not, even better, because you need to be constantly on the move, and you die rather quickly if you don't. Dash is your best friend because when you perform a quick roll, you become immune to bullets for a short while. You need to plan your moves carefully, though, because rooms might have all sorts of traps, or there might be another enemy in a better position, ready to hurt you.

The dash also has a short cooldown, but each beastie has its exact duration, so you can get used to it and train your muscle memory. Do you remember that The Crackpet Show is all about getting fame and securing some sweet sponsorship deals (more on that in the future episodes!)? One of them can double your dash. Definitely worth considering.

Likes
Whether you are a social media freak or laugh whenever you see someone thinking that likes are essential in their lives, you need to know that they really mean something in The Crackpet Show. After clearing each room, you get a small number of likes (dopamine, yay!) for each mob killed.

But, if you the kind of person finishing the game with full pockets and shi*tload of money, we've got some bad news. In the end, TCS is a rogue-lite shoot'em'up and likes stay with you only until the end of each run. So, whenever you enter the shop, consider buying weapons, perks, and precious health boosters. Especially before encountering one of the bosses!

When you play with your friends in a local co-op, your whole team shares the likes pool. A true test of your friendship and tactical thinking with resource management!

Coming up next…
In the next episode of "Expect the Unexpected", we will talk you through runs, choosing rooms, encountering bosses, and what happens after your death. See you soon!

The Crackpet Show (Making Of)

One of the first concepts for The Crackpet Show

The Vixa Games production set was ready in early 2020. During that time, our board of TV show directors discussed the potential setting (or, in other words, are asses firing bullets ok?). On top of that, Karol, our art director, had lots of fun by designing the tools of mayhem - we already knew at that time that TCS would take you on the rouge-like bullet-hell adventure. And yeah, what an adventure that would be without proper bosses? Klaudzia, our graphic designer said that DJ Horse is one of her favourites, and it was inspired by her party outfit (don’t judge!).

Can you guess which weapon(s) made it to the final game?

We are a small indie studio from Poland, and like (almost) all small indie studios, we were too optimistic (looking at you Spav, our game designer). In the beginning, we thought that the game would be ready to launch in Early Access after a year of production. Well, here we are, 20 months later. At least we didn't share the launch window at that time, so you didn't have to read the "yeah, we are sorry" PR statements. Fingers crossed you never will from us!

Just a typical Monday on the set of The Crackpet Show

A few months later, the game started to look closer to today's build. First, we added some blood, then more blood, and then some gore (and blood). Bunny, Cowie, Rusty, and Sharky, our characters, were animated correctly, alive, and ready to make (or break) your friendships via a couch co-op.

Yeah, we do some cheating sometimes.

We have asked Kuro, our programmer, about the most challenging part of coding The Crackpet Show. "Bounce" and "Rubber ball" - perks and weapons that affect the physics and increase mayhem to the max. Bob is most proud of the in-house level editor that gave us the much-needed boost in developing new stages. Serek worked hard to ensure that you can "revive" your fellow beasties while playing in a couch co-op mode.

It's tempting to stop moving during a revive, but this is how it usually ends…

Juliusz, our CEO AKA The Master of Steam, prepared us for the Summer Festival when we shared a glimpse of The Crackpet Show with you! At the end of the demo, a link to a survey helped us make a... cracking progress!

Could you make a better week to start as a PR Manager than gamescom time, especially when IGN features your game? When Robert joined Vixa Games, the buzz was all around, and we are incredibly grateful for all the support you gave us!

And here we are, together with our friends at Ravenage we have entered the final stage before the Early Access release! Thanks to their support, we are able to bring you even more beasties, weapons, perks, and a few surprises! Dominika joined the art team during that time, and she has been working on the content for future episodes updates.

A concept of workbench, coming to one of the future episodes!

And speaking of future episodes, we are planning to share the roadmap with you closer to the show's grand premiere.

Stay tuned!
P.S Yes, we are going to launch in Early Access in 2021.
