See Who's Pulling Their Weight in Co-Op, Plus... Secret Codes?!

Hello Trivia-brains! Big update for y'all incoming!

First off, we’re introducing an easy-access leaderboard that can be reviewed even during the game to see how you’re doing against your fellow Tricksters! In Co-Op Vs Boss it even shows players how they’re placed in their particular teams to introduce some competitive flare.

Please let us know what you think of this layout, as we’re intending to replace the leaderboard Mr. Tricks displays on the TV with this new look. Additionally, this is laying the groundwork so we can use your saved character names when online (a much requested feature...). Stay tuned!

Also – check out our new ‘Secret Codes’ field in the options menu. 👀 Many of our communities favorite cosmetics were those released during our limited-time Halloween and Christmas events. So, rather than make y’all wait over 200 days, we’ve started to add some inventive ways that these items can be unlocked out-of-season. Some will use secret codes that we’ll be revealing through Twitter and Discord while others may require you to think a little more ‘out there’. Keep those eyes peeled!

One last thing! After reviewing our player numbers we released an update last week which pulled back the US Trivia Tuesday time slot to an hour earlier. You can see the exact time both on the in-game counter in the main menu and on the discussion board. See you there!

Here's the full patch notes for Trivia Tricks version 0.8.16.3
Tab Menu
• Added a mid-game leaderboard that can be accessed by pressing Tab on a keyboard or pressing the Back/Select/View button on a controller!
  • This menu will break down exact player scores in Co-Op Vs Boss mode, so you can review how every member of your team is doing
  • Clicking on players' avatars in this menu will open their Steam Profile
  • Hosts can also use this menu to kick players while the game is in progress
  • Player rankings and positions are jumbled during the last round to avoid spoilers
  • The Phone controller layout has been updated to include a Back/Select/View button, enabling the leaderboard to be opened by mobile players!
  • We will be looking at updating the TV leaderboard in the future to match this new design, so please let us know what you think!
Secret Codes
• The Misc window in the Settings menu has now has a text field to enter secret codes! 👀
  • We will be periodically introducing methods to unlock our most popular limited-time cosmetics. Some will require codes we’ll be releasing on Twitter and Discord
  • While others may require some community puzzle solving!
  • Expert code-crackers have some unique sunglasses and an achievement already waiting for them. Good luck!
Question Database Update
• We continued our efforts to improve the mathematics category. We believe we’ve tracked down all of the extremely basic arithmetic questions. Next update we will be adjusting the incorrect answers to the remaining questions to make them likelier to trip players up!
  • Added nearly 50 additional questions, the vast majority suggested by the Discord community! Thank you to everyone who has suggested questions so far!
  • Fixed some typos, and cleaned up the wording on a variety of questions. Thanks to all of you who took the time to report these to us directly!
Other Changes
• The April Fools' joke Loot Box cosmetic has had its icon and description updated in the Character Creator and is no longer obtained on startup. It will be made available again in the future!
  • Clicking a player's avatar in the lobby will now open their Steam profile
  • The current round number and total rounds are now displayed on the TV
  • The controls menu has been updated to include an image showing the layout for phone players
  • In the host menu the button command explaining how to change tab was a little difficult to see, so we’ve placed a background behind it to improve visibility
  • Player names can no longer contain characters like !, . or ?
  • Improved the laugh emotion to fade instead of dissolve
  • From extremely impassioned feedback by many-a-wronged player, we have decided chance round cannot ever be "Fair" and have instead renamed that option to "Tame"
  • Does playing Trivia Tricks ever make you feel like you’re being watched?
Bug Fixes
• Fixed a bug where, after joining a game which was already in progress, players would have to click their answer twice after sending a chat message
  • The ‘Lucky Kitty’ and ‘Unlucky Kitty’ achievements will now unlock when the winner is revealed, rather than as soon as the game ends
  • Fixed a bug where the ‘Sticking To Your Guns’, ‘Honk!’ and ‘Tuesday Tussle’ achievements were not being granted on game boot if the player had the associated cosmetic but not the achievement
  • Fixed a bug where, after a game against King, the wrong camera was used in the lobby
  • Fixed a bug where P2/P3/P4 could not interact with all elements in the Pause menu
  • Fixed a bug in the Character Select screen where, after joining with keyboard for player 2, the button command to join player 1 would show the wrong button
  • Fixed a bug in the Character Select screen where, after leaving a game with the keyboard, the command to open the Remote Play Help Menu would show the wrong button
  • All 9 players will now be displayed if 8 players and the boss select the same answer. Previously the final player to answer would be cut off (although this did not impact scoring)
  • Fixed an issue with the Controller Disconnected menu where it could disappear without resolving Player 1's disconnection if multiple players were disconnected at the same time
  • Fixed a bug where the player could spam menu navigation sounds while the Controller Disconnected menu was visible
  • Fixed a bug where pressing Tab on a keyboard could cause unusual interactions with UI elements in certain menus
  • Potentially fixed the issue where P3 would sometimes be floating in the air at game start, or P5/6 would jitter up and down whenever the camera focused on the TV. However, this definitely isn’t our first attempt to solve this one, so no promises!

Use Your Phone to Connect More Players in Trivia Tricks!

Hello Trivia Fans!

We would like to start by giving a shoutout to the particular brand of Eggheads that have recently joined the show! Welcome aboard!

This week we've been improving the experience for Steam Remote Play Together users, with a focus on enabling Trivia Tricks to be controlled through mobile phones.

The latest update to Steam Remote Play has made it possible to turn any smartphone into a controller by simply following a link! Phones-as-controllers has been our most requested feature by far and this update is aimed at making the Remote Play experience as seamless as possible!

Your phones will automatically load our Steam Input layout and an in-game tutorial to set this all up is now on the Character Select Screen (really, it's easy!). The cherry on top of all these benefits - with Remote Play you can play with others online who don't even own Trivia Tricks! Nifty!

That's not all! We've also been busy fixing bugs (especially around the chatbox) and adding a heap of new questions on the latest hot topics as suggested by our extremely friendly Discord community!

Check out the full patch notes to Trivia Tricks 0.8.15.2 below!
Improvements for Remote Play
• The Character Select Screen now contains a handy tutorial on how to get setup with Steam Remote Play, both for using phones as controllers and for playing online with a single copy of Trivia Tricks
  • Mobile players will automatically get our mobile controller layout, designed to keep the questions and answers visible at all times
  • The controller disconnection menu has been changed to a non-invasive notification which allows questions to still be answered while shown - with the option of swapping out the disconnected player for an AI. Previously this was a full-screen dialog box which could only be dismissed by reconnecting the controller or returning to the main menu. This is to better accommodate possible network dropouts.
  • All players can now open and navigate the pause menu, not just player 1
  • The Character Select Screen has had its icons updated to represent phone players
  • The Character Creator now has a button to generate a random player name, allowing characters to be created without needing a keyboard (nifty for controllers!)
Question Database Update
• We have begun to adjust the focus of the mathematics category so there are less questions on basic arithmetics, therefore increasing the likelihood of getting a mathematics trivia question. We are also rebalancing the arithmetic questions to be generally harder. The benefits of this will become more visible over the next couple of updates!
  • Added over 50 additional questions suggested by the Discord community! Thank you to everyone who has suggested questions so far!
  • Fixed some typos, and cleaned up the wording on a variety of questions. Thanks to all of you who took the time to report these to us directly!
Chat Box Usability Improvements
• The chat box and disconnection menu will now appear in the correct location for all aspect ratios
  • Fixed a bug where all text typed into the character creator name field and chat box would be placed at the end, regardless of the cursor's position
  • Fixed a bug where it was not possible to click in the chat box or scroll chat history while a question was being asked, or when a Trickster was speaking
  • Fixed a bug where the chat would not wrap especially long words to a new line if they were too long
Misc Bug Fixes!
• Achievements that require the player to win a game or beat a boss will now unlock when the final score is revealed instead of during the scene transition. No more spoilers!
  • Achievements and cosmetics that must be unlocked in Standard Trivia mode now explicitly mention this in their descriptions
  • We've told Negative to get a move on during his chance time, so his animations are a lot faster now!
  • Fixed a bug where players who joined the lobby would be shown with the host's appearance until their cosmetics were loaded
  • Fixed a bug where, when Change Answers was enabled, the player was sometimes able to answer during moments where there were no questions being asked
  • Fixed an issue where the button prompts in the lobby didn't always show the correct icons for the currently used control method
  • Fixed a bug where local players other than player 1 could swap tab in the lobby host screen
  • Game start timer now remains in a X:XX format during the whole countdown
  • Game timer will now display 'Now starting...' when all players have readied up instead of returning to 1:00
  • Fixed bug where 'P' and 'Esc' had slightly different behaviour in certain pause screens
  • Some UI elements have been repositioned so there's no longer a pixel gap at the edge of the screen

Over the next couple of weeks we will be improving the UI's integration with Steam Community features.

Even More Options to Host Your Perfect Trivia Night!

Hello Trivia Fans!

For our twelfth regular update we have collected player feedback and significantly expanded the rule customization options, alongside adding some extra achievements and cosmetics!

Players told us they wanted to be able to increase or decrease the question timer, change answers after selection, and to opt for a less (or more!) score impacting Chance Round. In order to implement these options we've redesigned the lobby hosting screen to suit the range of ruleset options now available. Please let us know what you think, and any more ideas on more gameplay customization tweaks you would like to see!

The cherry on top of this update is three additional achievements, including one we reckon will be our hardest challenge yet! Good luck!!

The full changelist for Trivia Tricks version 0.8.14.0 is as follows...
More Game Customization!
• Hosts can now choose to allow players to change their answers after selection in Standard Trivia games
  • Hosts can now also choose to allow everyone to see each other's answers during a Standard Trivia game. Please note however that AI answers will remain hidden!
  • Chance Round odds can now be customized – alongside the existing ‘Off’ and ‘Normal’ we have also added ‘Fair’ and ‘Chaotic’!
  • ‘Fair’ removes the 1.5x and 1/2 chance balls, especially useful in medium and long games!
  • While ‘Chaotic’ significantly increases the chance of those multiplier balls appearing!
New Lobby Menu!
• The Lobby menu has been redesigned to be clearer, and give us space for additional customization options in future!
  • Modes and bonuses now have text to explain how they impact gameplay.
  • Bosses now little personality biographies and a star rating to represent their difficulty.
  • The game start countdown timer for when most of a lobby has readied up is now closer to the 'Ready' button and always visible.
Three New Achievements!
• Even more achievements, which unlock even more cosmetics!
  • Sticking to Your Guns
    - To unlock, be the only player to get an answer right in a Co-Op game with 4 or more players!
    - This unlocks the Cowboy Hat!
  • Tuesday Tussle
    - To unlock, Beat a Boss in Co-Op during Trivia Tuesday!
    - This unlocks the Steampunk Shirt!
  • HONK!
    - To unlock, get every question wrong in an entire Standard Trivia game!
    - This unlocks the Clown Wig! (honk)
General Experience Improvements
• After selecting an answer that answer will become highlighted. This is turned off if more than one person is playing on your machine to prevent you from seeing each other's answers.
  • There is now also a hover effect when mousing over answers.
  • When playing a Vs Boss game, your Steam friends list will now show you as being in a 'Vs Boss' game rather than a 'Trivia' game.
  • Screen transitions are now significantly more responsive.
  • Loading times have been heavily reduced.
  • When a player joins a game the unusual camera transition, and Trickster 90 degree spin, has been replaced with a more sensible smoke ‘pop’ effect.
  • Increased Negative's difficulty - he's now smarter and can streak more consistently! This should put him more in line with the difficulty we were expecting to see.
  • Achievements and cosmetics that must be unlocked in Standard Trivia mode now explicitly mention this in their descriptions.
Question Database Update
• Significantly expanded the question count of the Music and Sports categories!
  • Added more questions to the Art/Literature, Film/TV and Video Game categories!
  • Added many additional questions suggested by the Discord community! Thank you to everyone who has suggested questions so far!
  • Fixed some question typos, and cleaned up the wording on a variety of questions. Thank you to all of you who reported these to us directly!
Bug Fixes
• Fixed a bug where players could change the number of rounds played when playing Vs Boss.
  • Fixed a bug where if you joined midgame, and hadn't been in that game before, you started with 0 points instead of the points of the lowest player.
  • Fixed a bug where if you joined midgame, and it was a Standard Trivia game with Chance Round enabled, the Chance Round's ball machine would be invisible.
  • Fixed a bug where if you joined midgame, and then left while joining, the AI would be stuck facing sideways for the rest of the game.
  • Fixed a bug where if you joined midgame, and there was more than one player on your machine, then left then rejoined, you would not take over your previous characters.
  • Fixed a bug where if you joined midgame, the question timer would shake for 3 seconds when asked the next question.
  • Fixed a bug where if you joined a game with more than one player on your machine, the game would spawn a chat per player on your machine, when only one should be required.

Over the next two of weeks we will be improving the experience for Steam Remote Play Together players, with a focus on making Trivia Tricks more accessible for mobile phones.

Meet our newest Boss: Negative! Plus, join games that are in progress!

Hey!

Substantial update this week trivia heads! Headliners are a whole new Boss and functionality to join games that have already began!

First, that new Boss to clash against in Co-Op Vs Boss mode. Everybody, meet Negative!

Negative's for those among you who were looking for a Boss that's a bit more difficult than King. Not only does Negative create his own score damaging chance round balls, he will take points away from players who pick a wrong answer! Negative's not impossible though, as you're able to veto a large number of categories against him. Pull together your hot shot Trivia team, focus your expertise, and earn the Shirt of Shadows!

Additionally, you can now join games that are in-progress! Had a temporary internet blip? Rejoin with the points you left off with! Seeing a game in progress? We'll bump your score up to a fighting chance!

Regular update #11 is topped off with the script doubling in size, dozens of new questions from our friends in Discord, re-balanced Boss AI behaviour and a huge list of squashed bugs! We're sure you'll agree this is one of our biggest updates yet.

For those of you interested in the nitty-gritty, you can find the extensive patch notes to Trivia Tricks version 0.8.13.3 below:
Meet Negative!
• Team up to take down the edgiest of anti-heroes, Negative!
  • Careful now! You'll lose points for wrong answers...
  • And good luck enduring those damaging Chance Rounds...
  • But you can veto significantly more categories against Negative, so narrow the playing field to the subjects you're strongest at!
  • Beat Negative to unlock the new achievement, 'Negative Attitude', and earn the right to wear the spooky Shirt of Shadows!
  • Negative is topped off with a new model, animations, script, and voice! Good luck!
Joining Games that are In Progress!
• It is now possible to join games online after they have started!
  • If you have left or been disconnected from a game you will rejoin as your previous character with your old points, plus any that the AI has accumulated in the time since rejoining
  • If you're joining a Trivia game you haven't previously been in, we'll give you points that match the score of the lowest human player to get you caught up
  • If you join a Boss Mode that's in progress, you will inherit the points of the AI character that you replace
  • There is an informational screen when joining in-progress games, letting you know what question and round the game is currently on
  • Added an 'Invite Friends' button to the Pause Menu when online, handy if you're hosting an invite-only game!
  • The chat will keep you updated with the joining progress of any connecting players
  • Online games can be joined as long as there is an AI slot in the game that can be filled; so if you want players to be able to join you after the game has started, make sure there's a few AI available!
  • The join message when a game is full has been updated to explain that the player may not be able to join as there may be no AI slots to take the place of
  • In the case that a player has left, and a different player joins, they will only take the previously disconnected players slot if there is no other AI to join over
  • We hope that these changes make it easier for you to find games to play, and allow those of you who get disconnected mid-game to rejoin! Please let us know what you think!
Server Menu Changes!
• The server menu information has also been updated to give more useful information on games that have begun
  • In-progress games are shown with an animated background
  • The lobby screen now shows which round the game is currently in, and how many there are to go
  • Lobbies now show if they're playing Standard Trivia or Co-Op Vs Boss
Boss AI Redesign!
• The AI for Bosses is significantly more advanced than before and tracks various statistics to provide a more balanced and consistent experience
  • These changes should stop a Boss' score from becoming unachievably high
  • And they should stop a Boss' score from being uncharacteristically low
  • Bosses are now smarter at their favorite categories! For example, King is now more knowledgeable when it comes to History!
  • We'll be listening closely to your feedback on this Boss AI and will continue to adjust the balance in future patches, with a goal of giving this level of customization to our regular Trivia CPU characters!
Question Database Updates
• Fixed many question typos, and cleaned up the wording on a variety of questions. Thank you to all of you who reported these to us directly!
  • Added many additional questions suggested by the Discord community! Thank you to everyone who has suggested questions so far!
Other Changes & Squashed Bugs
• Trivia Tricks script has doubled in size! You'll find a lot more variety whenever Mr Tricks speaks!
  • In addition, Bosses can have more than one line, and as such King's script has been heavily expanded!
  • The lobby text in Boss Mode now updates to explain a Boss' unique mechanics
  • Fixed a bug where the camera would not zoom into the TV if a player selected an answer at the very last moment
  • Fixed a bug where the incorrect camera was used when revealing the answers in offline mode
  • Fixed a bug where the player count would not update in the server browser if a player left during the game
  • Fixed a bug where the Boss would appear as blue in the TV leaderboard, rather than using their personal banner (for example, King's banner should be gold)
  • Fixed a bug where Bosses would still pick the correct answer 25% of the time when their intention was to pick an incorrect answer
  • Fixed an issue where lighting was being applied incorrectly to the Chance Round Ball Machine
  • Fixed a recent regression where lighting was being applied incorrectly to the Tricksters
  • Fixed the community question credit text displaying long names incorrectly

Over the next two weeks we will be focusing on redesigning the lobby menu, allowing us to add additional rule customization options. We'll also be adding some extra achievements and cosmetics! You might be wondering why Negative is so grumpy? Well, he was going to have a starring role in a cancelled game, so maybe he still has a bit of a grudge?!
