Tortilleras

Mighty gods, supernatural creatures, ancient legends... Do you know what else played a central part in Aztec mythology?

Corn.

That's right, corn was the most important staple at that time, the most precious gift the gods gifted their children with, the fundamental crop which shaped all the societies developing in ancient Mexico.

No one knows who was the first tortilla maker, but certainly, tortilleras are such important figures, we absolutely had to include them in Mictlan.

As references, we used images of the goddess Chicomecoatl, also taking into consideration the ritual decorations that tortilleras wear in Otomi festivities, from the Tlaxcala region.

Take a look!

Tlatoani #2

Differently from the huey tlatoani, the “Lord of lords” who ruled over all of the other altepetls in the Aztec Empire, with the title of "Great Speaker", the tlatoani focused more on the needs of their region.

They had the most important position in Tenochtitlan, in terms of political hierarchy. The only people who were able to become a tlatoani were the descendants of the first tlatoani.
Only those deemed worthy of this title were chosen to inherit the throne.
A Council of royal members helped to make this decision by choosing those who had the necessary attributes to reign with wisdom and efficiency.

The tlacochcaltl was one of the most prominent positions in the Tenochtitlan hierarchy, held by men of the royal lineage. When the sovereign died, the new one was chosen among them,

The cape that they wore was called tucucizyo tilmatli.

What if the legends were true...?

You are walking in the middle of a forest, making your way through the thick foliage.
You hear a distant noise echoing through the trees.
You hear it again. It's getting closer, it's getting louder.
A dark shadow suddenly moves across the sky, hovering over you.
You look up, paralyzed by shock and fear: standing on the ground, as tall as the trees stretching up to the sky, you see an enormous human figure looking down at you.

The legends are true: you're looking at a Quinametli.

The Quinametzin are often mentioned in Aztec and Mesoamerican mythology and in Spanish chronicles.
These mysterious figures stood over 10 feet tall and weighed around 600 pounds. They lived in a time known as the Era of the Fourth Sun and it is believed that it was them who built the pyramids of Teotihuacán and the Great Pyramid of Cholula.

In these pictures, you can see the concept behind one of our cinematic sequences that you will find in Mictlan.
