Tepoztecatl

The god of drunkenness and fertility, god of the copper axe, lord of Tepoztlan, of the mountain and its waters, makes his entrance to Mictlan!

Tepoztecatl was one of the four hundred Aztec gods of pulque, the traditional drink of the Aztecs: fermented agave (or maguey) juice.

According to the myth, Tepoztecatl was present with the other gods (Mayahuel, Patecatl, Yauhtecatl, Totoltecatl) in the mountain Chichinauhia, where they prepared the legendary wine and tasted it for the first time.

The legend also depicts Tepoztecatl as a hero born from the Axitla spring and as being the one who killed the monster king Xochicalcatl, thus liberating the land of Morelos. El Tepozteco, in the Mexican state of Morelos, is an archaeological site named after the deity.

The creative process behind the scenes

Here is a sneak peek behind the curtains of the development process of Mictlan: An Ancient Mythical Tale.

There is a very long process behind every scene we intend to bring on the screen when our videogame will be finally ready. First of all, the idea of how the scene should be presented is conveyed through concept art, then a mood board is created in order to communicate the "feel" of our idea and, according to it, lightening, colors and tones are defined.

This is only the first step, followed by a long process going through blocking, 3D recreation, ambiance, post-processing, animation, cameras, dialogues, cinematics, music, sound effects... Everything has to be perfect in order to create the best videogame we can create, always keeping in mind the final look and feel we want to convey in Mictlan.

In today's post, we are sharing with you some of the sketches that our amazing concept art team has created, along with a mood board which serves as a reference in this particular scene.

Jaguar Warrior #3

We already talked about the mighty Jaguar Warriors in this post and this post.

Here is another concept art we've been working on!

In Mexica mythology, it was believed that warriors wearing the jaguar's tlahuiztli (uniform) gained the animal's strength during battles.
Even though they wore light armor, Jaguar knights were the most feared, thanks to their speed, agility and bravery.
In the tales from the book Wars and Society in Ancient Mesoamerica by Ross Hassig, it is reported that one of the Jaguar Warriors could easily take down a group of three men at once: the mere sight of a Jaguar Warrior would send shivers down the enemies' spines.
How would you like to interact with these Warriors in the universe of Mictlan: An Ancient Mythical Tale?

Let us know in the comments!
#TributoATonantzin
This week we want to celebrate all the extraordinary Tonantzin in our lives!
In Nahuatl, the word “Nantli” means "mother", so the meaning of “Tonantzin” is “our beloved mother”, which was how the ancient Mexicas used to call the mother goddess: Coatlicue.

We want to celebrate all the women that have raised, educated and accompanied us in our lives. It doesn't matter if they are your biological mothers or not, your sisters, your mentors or your friends.

📷Take a picture with the woman in your life that inspires you, the one who has become your spiritual Nantli, and then share it on your social media with the hashtags:
